I keep checking daily for some news on the songs release! But still nothing. Do you guys really think its going to happen this year at all?

The remixes or new versions i would like to hear are of some songs that seems overproduced. Like When all is said and done. In Another morning without you i like that its more Close to The Winner takes it all with focus on piano and vocals. I think that WAISAD would benefit a lot from this. Other could be My love my Life or Our last summer where I dont like the guitarsolo and the bridge. But also what would have been great would be if ABBA recorded live version of this songs to use for the Abbatars.

I wholeheartedly agree. No remixes please. ABBA's originals are such classic recordings. I don't think they can be improved upon. Didn't they use the original backing track for the Spanish version of DQ (with the extra verse)? I also feel it doesn't sound as jubilant or fully produced as the English version. I feel the same way about a couple of other Spanish versions, f.e. Fernando. I don't know what it is exactly. It doesn't sound as warm as the English version. Maybe it's because it has less vocal layers or because B&B are absent from the Spanish recording. I prefer Frida's Swedish solo version to ABBA's Spanish version. I don't think the backing track of the Spanish version of DQ is totally the original. The bass-line may be the same but is more prominent, giving this version a heavier sound. Also, the piano isn't as tinkly and the introductory vocals are relatively muted. The whole thing is less vibrant than the English version. With original backing track I meant the early backing track, before further overdubs were done on it. I looked it up in The Complete Recording Sessions by CMP and it says: "Michael (B. Tretow) used the 24-track tape of 'Dancing Queen' from September 1975, which has most of the features on the recording but not crucial elements such as Benny's grand piano playing: this overdub only exists on the re-edited 24-track tape with the verses re-arranged. Thus, Benny must have overdubbed his piano part on 'Reina Danzante' after returning from Barbados in mid-January, which explains why it has such a different tone compared to the original. Another anomaly is the electric guitar chord-playing, which is not on 'Dancing Queen' at all, but clearly audible here."

I think things are still really uncertain regarding when or how theatre productions and such might be able to start back up again safely. That is crucial to know in order to plan the 'ABBAtars' project properly - as well, of course, as the resumption of the 'Mamma Mia!' stage shows around the world, 'Mamma Mia! The Party' and also things like the 'Super Troupers' exhibition in London. With the new songs tied to the ABBAtar release, I think it is really difficult to predict when things might happen.

I'm sure you are right. I am myself an opera conductor and the opera theatres dont think anything will happen before spring 2021. I believe the musical theatres are considering March 2021. But nothing is at all certain. Orchestras have started to record again this week, but all instruments are spread out in the recording studios. Strings only on one day and woodwind and brass recorded on a different day.

Latest interview with Bjorn in France this week...
Today Björn was interviewed by the newspaper "Le Parisien"
Björn talked about the new ABBA songs and the Avatars project. He said: "Oh yes oh yes ! Benny and I wrote a few songs, even for ABBA! These songs should be released before the end of the year. They are already registered. Not an entire album… At least two songs, maybe three or four, We haven't decided yet" and He added: "We wrote these new songs to accompany an ABBA show with avatars that We hope to see on stage in 2022. And you will see, they sound very ABBA".
Ecrivez-vous toujours des chansons ? Oh oui, oh oui !

What great news...the possibility of a 4th new song if we are lucky! :-) I have a source who has told me there were 4 completed songs, so I'm glad this interview confirms that.

So the guessing goes on... Only the 2 we know about , confirmed.. the others are presumed, and the use of “may use” “ we haven’t decided” the JLT effect.. knowing that it’s there but may never be heard....will have the potential to be very frustrating...
Its just teasing, and unfairly, as “ they“ must know the media reaction let alone the fans, if we end up with just 2, after all this time its going to be ever so bitter sweet...
Again.. we wait.. the continual wait...🙄

Yes, the teasing is frustrating and is in stark contrast to how ABBA released songs back in the 70s and 80s - they may record a song one week and it was out in the record stores within a few weeks (or a few months at the most).
If the new songs will be released before the end of the year, hot on the heels of the Studio Albums boxset and Super Trouper vinyl releases, it would seem that B&B are not concerned about making a good deal of space (in time) and perhaps fuss for the release of the new songs. I could imagine them wanting to release them quite casually, although I'm not sure that the record company would go along with this.
Even if we get only two songs this year, I imagine there will be more in 2022, as I think they have said previously that they will keep something new for the ABBAtars tour.

That's not entirely true... Dancing Queen was recorded in summer and autumn 1975 and released in August 1976. But you're right that usually it was much faster. I also don't like the constant teasing and hinting and contradicting it later but there's nothing we can do about it. Let's hope that the "not an entire album..." line is just a part of their hard-to-understand strategy...

I knew that someone would point out the case of "Dancing Queen" I don't think we can read anything into Bjorn's words concerning the prospect of an album. It's possible that they'll go back to the old model of releasing one or two precursor singles before an album, but I doubt it.

I read that to mean not a whole album this year, but that 4 songs were completed but they hadn't decided how many to release this year. Perhaps I read it incorrectly? I think you’re being optimistic... “Maybe three or four, we haven’t decided yet” is a rather odd thing to say. It suggests they’ve recorded at least four but can’t decide if the unnamed two are good enough to release (as in Just Like That and I Am The City), or that they haven’t recorded the other two yet but might do. What do you do with four tracks these days? B-sides don’t really exist anymore and it’s too few to create even an EP. Still, it would suggest they’ve abandoned the idea of waiting until the ‘Tars are ready and that the two tracks (minimal) will get an airing separately. If it really is going to happen this year, I’d suggest November or December. Unless Björn’s French is that good, is it likely that the interview was conducted in English, then translated to French and then (separately) back to English? That’s two rounds of translations... nothing could have been lost in that could it?

I think it's the first time Bjorn has officially admitted to there being more than two 'new' songs, although we all guessed it as he admitted (last autumn?) to having been back in the studio with the others again.

In such case it would be better to remain silent about them... And what do you do with four songs? Put them on a brand new compilation as the opening and closing tracks... Roxette were experts in that and I remember their fans were not happy - every few years a new Greatest Hits album came out with basically the same tracklist (always omitting one favourite single that Per never liked) plus 2-4 new songs...

I had hoped that, although the avatar show was the instigator of Benny and Bjorn writing new songs for ABBA and all four getting back in the studio again, their love of making music together would take over, and we'd get a new album - that it would become their primary motivation. I was obviously indulging in wishful thinking. It's the two songs, and, just maybe, two more - which would still be great, of course.
But despite what Bjorn has said, I want to engage in a bit more wishful thinking: that we'll get the surprising and wonderful gift of a new ABBA album.

Richard there is nothing to say that this won't actually happen. Bjorn has said many times in interviews the other 3 had said that they wished he would keep quiet and not spoil the surprise!

They could just release the first 2 songs on the same day and see which one is more popular with the fans on streaming sites like Spotify. I don't think they would precisely co-ordinate vinyl and CD single releases worldwide on the same day, certainly not in the current world climate.
Didn't Ed Sheeran do that with 2 songs recently, and got the number 1 and 2 positions in the UK singles chart (I'm not suggesting the same would happen to ABBA, since I think mass streaming is possibly a teenage thing nowadays!).

The chances of ABBA getting a top 40 song are limited (I don’t use the term “single” as they don’t properly exist anymore, other than in name only). However, a number one album is a real possibility. That’s why it would be a squandered opportunity if they didn’t release a full album (or at least “full” in the sense of what is accepted in chart terms these days). It wouldn’t set any records for longest gap between number one albums as Gold reached that in 2008, but must surely be a contender for the longest gap between studio albums? Let’s face it, none of us will download or stream the new songs. We’ll buy the CD and vinyl, but they don’t sell anywhere near enough to chart. Albums still have this power though.

I download and stream songs, via Amazon and Spotify Premium, but I am not sure how many others do.
Perhaps we'll eventually get a new 2CD 'Very Best of ABBA' type compilation - a bit like the Japanese '40/40 Best of' - but with the new tracks added?

Graham Norton said as much to Bjorn in 2019 in the radio interview. He said its going to be called ABBA platinum..Bjorn spluttered and Graham said well that's very near the truth isn't it? I would buy the download, but that's no substitute for a CD single/7 inch vinyl.

I agree with Alan that there is no guarantee that the new songs as singles would rise very high in today's Singles charts. In fact, there may be a case for not releasing them as individually downloadable singles in order to avoid the trials and tribulations of the Singles charts. I would prefer to see them released on some kind of album (but not "Gold") as well as on limited-edition singles on vinyl and perhaps CD, but not limited enough to create a buying frenzy like on Record Store Day when non-fans snap up copies to sell at inflated prices on eBay.
I hate to say this but it would be easy to add them as bonus tracks to the downloadable edition of "Gold" and on a bonus disc with a CD edition of "Gold". Perhaps there will be an intermediate release of (say) two songs in this way before the end of this year and then a new album containing all the new songs in 2022 when the ABBAtars are supposedly launched. It's still not clear how the soundtrack will be created for the ABBAtars show (studio or live versions of songs, or a mix of the two) but I could imagine them releasing an 'ABBAtars soundtrack' album at the time.

It is an interesting debate - I would perhaps think that ABBA themselves are not particularly concerned about chart placings, as long as the songs are the best they can be. The record company, however, might take a different view. As we all know, though, the days when charts 'worked' in the same way as they did in ABBA's hey-day are long since gone.
No doubt the coming months will inform us how the new songs will be marketed. I remember the vice-president of Universal UK making a statement (in late 2018, I think) to the effect that he was looking to link in the new songs with a concerted marketing campaign for ABBA's back catalogue, so maybe this is still in the mix somewhere (and, indeed, the coloured vinyl albums making an appearance soon might be a part of that plan).

That 'message' from Universal UK sounds quite depressing to me, the worst-case scenario being that they will link the new songs to the purchase of an expensive package of old material. They should make the new material accessible to people with all sorts of pockets. And it seems to me that they are already very active in pushing ABBA's back-catalogue, with the various vinyl re-releases of the studio albums (and the Deluxe CDs before that). These re-releases have proved that today's UK public (at least) have little interest in buying ABBA's studio albums in great quantities, as the re-issues have so far hardly dented the UK Albums chart. I think the hard-core fans already feel exploited by the record company and I really hope that they don't use the new songs as a vehicle to try to squeeze a lot more money out of us. In my mind, they should package the new songs in an interesting selection - ideally a whole new album, otherwise a compilation of lesser-known ABBA songs that deserve more of the limelight (possibly drawing on some of the album tracks used in the "Mamma Mia" movies).

I wrote before and still want them to make live versions of some of the late lesser known songs that they were themselves not so happy about productionsvise. Also it would serve as backing tracks for the ABBAtars show. Like Summernight city, The visitors, When all is said and done, The day before you came, Our last summer maybe Andante andante and maybe a more naked version of The Winner takes it all. This would fit with an image of more adult songs and arrangements with less synts and more live instruments.

I don't personally think 'mixing' the new songs with back-catalogue songs from the 1970s/1980s on a compilation would be a good idea - it feels too disjointed.
I might have mentioned it before, but if there were '2-track' CD singles, containing each one new song, plus an instrumental version of it, I would most certainly collect those.

You mean like even more ABBA gold? I don't think every modern ABBA compilation should be regarded as an extension of "ABBA Gold". Indeed, I never liked the title "More ABBA Gold", as not many (if any) of the tracks on that album earned gold discs and many weren't even singles. I think it would be a relevant 21st century project to put the non-singles from the "Mamma Mia" movies together with the new songs in an ABBA compilation. I'm thinking of songs like "Slipping Through My Fingers", "When All Is Said And Done", "Our Last Summer", "When I Kissed The Teacher", "Why Did It Have To Be Me?", "Kisses Of Fire", "Andante, Andante", "I've Been Waiting For You", "My Love, My Life" and (a must) "The Day Before You Came". OK, this list overlaps with "More ABBA Gold" but that is almost inevitable. A more ambitious project would be to try to make the recording quality more consistent between these songs from different albums/years by re-mixing or perhaps re-recording aspects of their backing tracks, but without touching their vocals. Just a thought. Personally, I'm not keen on the idea of new live versions of existing songs, as for me the magic of ABBA was their studio recordings - their unique sound was very studio-oriented, which was difficult to re-create live.
