Adele - I'd like to know too why Bennybjorn called her Adkins. It's a tad annoying.
I knew 3O had slumped in the Sales Chart to outside the top 70, Voyage has been outselling it in the sales chart for some weeks. I hadn't realised she was even lower in the Main Chart. In the Streaming Chart even 25 is higher than 30. I'm talking album titles 😀
Adele gets more streaming than ABBA but not as much as Ed Sheeran. This tells a lot about the demographics of their fans.
I liked her 21 album. Some great songs especially Rolling in the Deep and Somebody Like You. T Quite contrasting songs. Now it's all very dull, dull, dull songs.
I was never a fan of Ed Sheeran, though I admit I quite liked Shape of You.
Voyage didn't get much streaming. It looks like it appeals only to hardcore, older fans - unlike Gold.
Finally, if ABBA did tour in person, Frida and Agnetha's voices might be more suitable for the more serious ballads but people want to hear, mainly, the uptempo songs, and in a way they were sung originally. That - and more importantly ABBA's reluctance to play live is why we have Abbatars.

Adele has the voice of an angel - a Hell's Angel.
Kylie records under the name Kylie Minogue. It's just that people call her Kylie.
This known by first name is usually female - Cher, Madonna, Sade, Gabrielle, Louise, Tiffany, Cheryl and Frida. The only maleI can think of is Prince.

If ABBA did do a one-off live show (say a set at Glastonbury), I think the ballads would be out, as they tend to be sung solo and would therefore expose the voice more. I believe they would largely do songs with undemanding vocals or songs that they can sing together, possibly with backing singers to aid towards the full ABBA vocal sound that can normally only be achieved in the studio. These might include some uptempo songs, but I doubt that A&F would move a lot.
By the way, I think it is a bit disrespectful and contrary to refer to artists by their surnames, although the press sometimes do. In her English-language career, Frida went under the name Frida yet we don't refer to her as Lyngstad.

Not really related to ABBA - or only tangentially - I read that during the Baroque period, a musician who played straight from the score, and who didn't add their own little 'inventions', was regarded as "a dry old stick". Apart from jazz improvisation - often using standard songs as the vehicle - pop music, anyway, seems to reject that approach a lot of the time, perhaps because audiences in general are deemed to not like it nor want it. For about 12 years, Bruce Springsteen played “Born To Run” in concert pretty much the way it was on the record…maybe a bit faster. Then, on the Tunnel Of Love Express Tour in 1988, he started playing it as an introspective acoustic guitar ballad. I thought it was great! Made the audience focus more on the lyrics and overall theme of escape. I don’t know if that approach works on every song. Some songs rely on instrumental hooks and rhythms and to alter them too much diminishes their appeal. (Try playing Lipps Inc.’s “Funkytown” as an acoustic guitar ballad with solo voice. Or, for that matter “Dancing Queen.”) But if it’s a well-written song with good music AND lyrics, it could probably stand up to reinterpretation. Heck, Bob Dylan changes his songs every night on tour. His band never knows what key or tempo they’ll be playing in until Bob calls it out just before he starts playing!

But not in a festival, where most aren't going to be ABBA fans they could sing more mature ballads to fit their mature voices. But none of this will happen!

cliff ,I love Bob Dylan's approach to live music-making as you describe. And provided the artist is so inclined, and the song seems a candidate for a different presentation, then hopefully an audience will take it as adding to the interest and vitality of a concert. I suppose it depends on having confidence in your fans. Mind you, in the unlikely event of ABBA doing something live now, it would, understandably, be highly thought through - even though a more flexible, spontaneous, event might work.

I think you’re right, Richard. A group like Abba would definitely think things through and plan every detail. As Benny and Björn are not only great songwriters but expert arrangers, this makes sense. And as much as I’d love to hear them as they are now, doing updated versions of their catalog, I doubt that will ever happen. That’s just not who they are. And considering all the great music they’ve given us, that’s fine.

Curious: why do you refer to her as “Adkins” when she’s known as Adele? She’s never professionally called herself Adele Adkins and most people would only know of her as Adele. It’s not even like you’re shortening her name as Adkins has more characters than Adele! I think Adele’s peak has quietly passed, similar to Sam Smith’s did. They still have major hit albums on release but not the staying power. Her next album (probably called “35”) will be number one and sell well, but will likely spend even less time in the top 70. Ed Sheeran hasn’t reached that point yet, but I’m sure will do in time. Truth be told, I can't really stand Adkins. I don't like people who sing in fake/contrived accents and I don't like cliched lyrics - she does both. And I find it a bit annoying when singers want to be known just by their first name. Don't get me started on Minogue! Don’t think Kylie emphasised her first name too much. I know that in the Fever era her singles started to just print her first name, but with the arrival of Jenner on the scene they have had to establish which Kylie is which, in regards to w the USA and rest of the world. I know that Jenner tried to trademark her first name but Minogue held the domain rights to Kylie.com before Jenner was even born.

Being annoyed by singers who work under just their first name or a stage name is odd. It's (mostly) how the artist is introduced to you, how they choose to market themselves and their music. Isn't it a little churlish to insist on adding a surname that they've deliberately shed, or choose to keep for their private life? I wonder how Frida, Cher, Madonna, Prince, Black, The Weeknd, Boy George, Beyonce, Bjork, Duffy (a surname, no less!), Gabrielle, Kelis, Lorde, Loreen, Lulu, or P!nk might react?! (Accepting that Prince and Black are no longer with us, but.... y'know...)

Just thought of another, Sting. Not his real name but still. And Hometime has just mentioned Black and The Weekend. Now I can think of Drake, Usher, Eminem. Ok, maybe a few more males but still more females. I forgot Lulu and even more female artists such as Beyonce - thanks to Hometime again It seems silly to get irritated by artists who go by one name. I mentioned and so did a couple of others, Frida. Is there an issue with her going by her first name for solo work?

Kylie’s official solo artist name is still Kylie Minogue. At least, the official charts website lists her as that.
Sade is an odd one, as it’s the name of both the singer and the band. Sade is the lead singer of the band. Sade the band has four current members and two former members. They aren’t session musicians but full band members. The confusion lies in the fact that their singer Sade Adu is usually just known as Sade.
Blondie is another one. Debbie/Deborah Harry always has that peroxide blond hair so the band name is almost synonymous with her. Whilst most people know it’s a band, the image most have is Debbie Harry and a load of blokes few can remember the names of or what they look like.

You remind me of the Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse “Self-Righteous Brothers” characters where they always refer to well-known people by their surnames. Though in their case they only took a dislike to them after coming up with a highly unlikely hypothetical situation. “I’d say, oi, Adkins, no!!”

Nice to see someone on this forum who is (I presume) a fan of Springsteen and Dylan. They, along with ABBA (of course), David Bowie and Elton John, are my favourite artists/songwriters. His voice is now so awful, and his reworking of songs so extreme, that any enjoyment for me from listening to him is lost. I AM a fan of both Springsteen and Dylan, Gary. Early Elton John, as well. And I agree with you completely re: Dylan’s live renditions of his songs. Up until about 20 years ago, I felt he still took his audience into account, and even when the songs were done in a radically different style, he still included enough of whatever made the song special in the first place. Now, it seems he plays whatever strikes his fancy to amuse himself and himself only. I still feel he’s one of the greatest songwriters of the modern era, but unless the tickets were given to me free of charge, I have no real desire to see him perform live. I’m no mind reader, but perhaps the members of Abba, as music fans themselves, saw other performers of their generation who continued doing concerts into their 70’s and 80’s with diminishing abilities and decided that wasn’t for them. They certainly came up with a unique way around that dilemma, didn’t they? edit: sorry that it looks like I’m quoting myself above, when I’m actually quoting Gary. Don’t know how that happened.

[...] but I really don't like Adkins one little bit, so that's who she is to me. I'm sure she'll cope! I totally get that: I have a strong dislike of Robbie Williams and Oasis. A dislike strong enough for it to be irrational, almost. I find Adele increasingly difficult to listen to now too. Those American pronunciations and some of her vocal mannerisms really grate. She's a talented woman, but she's not for me. But like you say, she's bound to cope!

Spot on Tony, I agree with you. I cannot tolerate Robbie Williams, Oasis, The Spice Girls, Girls Aloud ( especially talentless Cheryl ), Britney Spears and so on. Adele has become very predictably boring in my estimation. I also, back Alan's views about Adele's longevity. She hasn't the staying power ABBA have.

The ABBA Facebook account has announced that it's behind the scenes at ABBA Voyage, so it's probably just promotion for the shows.

Maybe a tad harsh of me. Take no notice of my occasional rants. With music I am going back in time to the eighties in fact. Besides ABBA, I enjoy listening to Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Pointer Sisters, Nik Kershaw and A-ha.

Apols - not directly Voyage related (other than noting that the album remains out of the top 100) but Gold is firmly ensconced in the top 20, back into the top 15 in the mid-week chart. Just wondered if it was generally in the top 20 much in the year or two before Voyage came out, or if the whole Voyage thing (album/concerts) has given it a boost...

I see that Lay All Your Love On Me is the next lyric video coming our way (Friday). This'll be the first that doesn't have any performance clips to draw visuals from. A still was included in the newsletter... I'm holding off on any judgement until Friday

Has anyone else seen the rumour circulating on Facebook about a "Voyage" deluxe edition in the Autumn with two news songs, "Hit By A Train" and "My Story Ends With You"? People should know what I think about the first title but the second title could be very appropriate if it were to be ABBA's final song - like, we're done now and you, the fans, will have to continue the ABBA story through support of the ABBAtars. But maybe it's too appropriate/obvious - it could easily have been made-up by someone.

I hadn't heard the rumour but specific song titles certainly add some weight. I won't get my hopes all the way up yet, but it'd be nice to have this to look forward to. Cue requests for Just Like That (referencing the serial numbers posted in recent times). If they're taking requests, I want the show versions of a few songs - WAISAD most of all.

Hit me like a train could work as a line within a song but as a title I'm less sure.
I like the idea of a final swansong by ABBA so My Story Ends With You sounds great . However, the source of this latest rumour is dodgy to say the least. Let's just say he's not what I consider a true ABBA fan and certainly has no respect for Frida.
When all is said and done, I'm more than happy with Voyage. If we'd only got I Still Have Faith In You and Don't Shut Me Down I'd still be happy.
