Thanks for that summary Alan. Yes 1994 was the big year for anniversary release. An updated Thank You For the Music box set with Voyage tracks, Just Like That and a few rarities would be quite nice.
Typo: it should be 2024. [Thanks Johnny. Corrected. Alan]

Assuming reports about the two unfinished Voyage songs are finished and set for release (and I have no reason to doubt this) where should they be homed?
A deluxe edition of Voyage?
An Anthology
A re-vamped More Gold (along with first 2 Voyage singles and maybe Slipping Through My Fingers). Goodbye to The Way Old Friends Do, I Wonder, Loverlight, Cassandra and one other (or whatever your choices are!)
An Alternative Definitive Collection. 2 CD set of alternate recordings of the songs eg Voyage versions, live versions, remix etc as well as a few original.
Or whatever album you think.

Tough decision, there's for and against for everything... I'm guessing it might boil down to Universal and how much money they can make...
Voyage. Deluxe seems the most obvious, but has it run its course, as we know studio albums are tough to shift, plus it's over a year old, and you'd think they would have done it by now, 19 weeks on UK album charts shows it doesn't have longevity. So unlikely to stir up much more interest.
A fan favourite and that says it all , Anthology, but probably will be far to expensive and very small sales, commercially successful, I doubt it
The same applies for the Definitive
More Gold, as pains as it is for me to say probably the best option, revamp, take out a few tracks as Johnny mention, add the two, plus something like Dream World etc along with IATC , you'd have a mixture of well known and new and as the likes of SNC is in the show, it may attract a few thousand more sales.
What we all want and what we will get is another matter... A new Album....which appears to be unlikely
So due to lack of real option , at this moment in time More Gold, would I buy it, probably if it had a few more new and unknown but I really don't know...
One thing for certain over the next 10 years plus we will probably be subjected to many compilations......

Good summary foreverfan. A revamped More Gold seems the best option to me. It would have to include ISHFIY and DSMD too.

If Universal and/or ABBA feel that Voyage's fortunes really could be reignited, then a deluxe edition might be it. But, as everyone has pointed out, the album seems to have had its day. One extra mid-chart week based on pre-orders seems to squander the effort put into new material.
The revision of More Gold is a fun idea but the idea itself is fraught with impracticalities. As far as I'm aware - and here is where Colin's expertise would be hugely welcome again - the album would be disqualified from chart re-entry because the tracklist would be too different. Aren't there limits on what can be added/subtracted? The ideas that everyone has for the new version of More Gold is essentially a kind of anthology.
I'd like to think that something akin to the ABBA The Album/Movie tie-in might be possible in terms of this half-century celebration. A compilation that mirrors the Voyage setlist, topped up with missing hits, a key album track or two and the new songs. Two CDs should cover it nicely but I've noticed a growing trend for more discs being included in new compilation sets. The success of the digital version is probably key to any chart longevity. As a set, it'd probably need to ensure that Gold remains an immortal main cash-cow, so alternative versions of some tracks might be a solution? Make it a set that advertises the show and vice versa. Splice LAYLOM and SNC. Use the new acapella-intro version of WAISAD. Maybe a live version of Waterloo from, say, 1977? Would the show version of TWTIA with the extended choral outro be too radical? If people can lap up those awful Mamma Mia versions, they can surely handle alternate versions featuring the actual talent.
I'd hope it'd be the kind of release that'd appeal to a few different demographics. The diehards would get new songs and new versions of old songs, so they wouldn't be shelling out for the same old same old. It's a set that could sell well at the Voyage merch stand (assuming the show connections are advertised on hype stickers). If it were packaged and marketed in the right ways, it could even tie in with a decent documentary that, in turn, could sell the show and sell the album.
Anyway, that's my longwinded tuppence ha'penny worth.

HOMETIME ,you're right about chart eligibilty of any More Gold revamp. You are allowed up to 20% different tracks, so just 4 tracks. But with More Gold perhaps maintaining sales isn't so important as it would be for Gold. In my opening post I did mention an alternative Definitive Collection including Voyage versions Yep, your suggestions of the Voyage set list and others seems the way to go if you opt for double CD type compilation. Alternate versions would have the two distinct advantages . 1. Getting interest in a new compilation and 2.As you suggest Hometime not affecting Gold's longevity- because they aren't the original versions. This would also be a good option. As for anthologies, apart from B+B probably not wanting this there's the issue of it would have very limited appeal. It worked for The Beatles as their fan base (in UK) may not be as wide but it's deeper - as shown by their Anthologies success and studio albums still selling.

I can see the limits to the appeal of an anthology for any artist. A well-presented compilation with a nod to anthology ideals could be a fair hybrid. Present the biggest hits untouched, include the Voyage versions of some smaller hits, include the couple of new tracks. Apart from the band-approved new material, nothing would appear that hadn't already been okayed by them: the original recordings, the Voyage re-working that they had helped create. It probably still leaves JLT gathering dust in a vault, but that'd be a surprise to nobody.
It could be an opportunity to - for once - apply a slightly more lofty/serious tone to the marketing. They've set precedents with the Voyage show. They've shown they still have it in them to innovate. An opportunity to reflect on half a century in which they conquered the pop world and became exemplars of production and musicality is a massive hook for any marketing team. Subtly handled sentimentality and respectful nostalgia should cement their iconic status and a well-handled new compilation could be a brilliant lens through which to view it. Elegant, kitsch-averse package design would be good. What an opportunity to snaffle up the casual buyers, the die hards, and the music snobs who claim to have reappraised ABBA ahead of their revived popularity.

If More Gold is allowed only 4 track changes, then it would work with addtion of ISHFIY and DSMD plus those 2 new tracks.... What to omit would be the next question...
Do you think anyone in Universal taps into our conversations ?

If More Gold is limited to four track changes, I doubt there'd be much hair-pulling about what to omit. I reckon that I Am The City, I Wonder, Lovelight and Cassandra would be shown the door. They're stronger songs than some of the tracks that are allowed to stay because of their A-side status, but it's a fairly obvious strategy. But would the rules allow for a more satisfying running order?

Hometime, I picked 3 of your recommendations for ejection from More Gold. Would happily opt for I am the City too.Pretty sure a lot of common agreement on this The running order is a bit of a 'mare.
Foreverfan - Agree with your four choices for inclusion. They really are the obvious ones.
I think a deluxe edition of Voyage and Anthology are the non-runners here.

Glad you mentioned STMF, Johnny: it raises the issue of songs made popular by the Mamma Mia franchise - and through the Voyage show.
Off the top of my head, I can think of a bunch of songs that the great unwashed got to know through Mamma Mia that weren't on Gold: Honey Honey, STMF, OLS, I Dox5, IBWFY, MLML, AA, WDIHTBM, Angeleyes. Add in songs elevated by the Voyage show - TV, HIYS, WAISAD, SNC, Eagle. Then there are the hits missing from those entities but still known/loved: TDBYC, OAOAO, HOH, UA, RR, SL. That's 20 songs before you add the Voyage singles and the two new tracks. I wonder if it's possible that a new compilation could be more expansive and interesting than we've had before.

Oh no! You've inadvertently rained on my parade, Tony, pointing to the uncomfortable reality that the album has likely had its day! I was about to make the case that a final 50th Anniversary album is the best place for these new songs rather than what I think would be their messy and unsatisfactory placement on pre-existing albums and compilations. But Bjorn has ruled it out, pretty emphatically, such an album, so I accept it won't happen. Nevermind, I'm so looking forward to hearing these songs if and wherever they turn up. Regarding "My Story Ends With You, I like your idea, Johnny, of it being a positive ballad - kind of an antidote to TDBYC. But I also think such a title would work with a wonderfully tuneful uptempo song. Maybe both of these unreleased songs could be uptempo.

My bad, Richard. To be fair, Voyage is probably the best fit for the unreleased songs. My thinking is rooted in the crass, cash-fixated, chart-obsessed parts of marketing.
As for the two titles, they both strike me as upbeat (if not necessarily uptempo) songs. For me, it'd be nice if they were in the same ballpark as, say, Story Of A Heart, DSMD or NDAI. Hopefully, neither will be afflicted by flutes or panpipes!

I guess another feasible option would be a deluxe version of 1982's 'ABBA - The Singles', which to my knowledge, has not been reissued in remastered form and/or appended with bonus tracks.
Of course, the sub-title 'The First Ten Years' would need to be revised, shifting attention to the Eurovision 50th anniversary in order to expand the track-listing, but I've always wanted this collection to be revamped, particularly if a vinyl version could be forthcoming, taking its cues from the original deluxe box version.
In addition to "I Still Have Faith In You", "Don't Shut Me Down" and the two new tracks/singles, other originally omitted singles would need to be considered for inclusion, particularly latter-day singles such as "Eagle", "On And On And On", "Lay All Your Love On Me" and "When All Is Said And Done". Could be an impressive package.

How do you mean? The Definitive/Essential Collection was effectively an expanded version of The Singles. Or do you mean use the original name and artwork but with more of a Definitive/Essential tracklisting? The Essential Collection added four tracks which had videos (Bang-A-Boomerang, That’s Me, One Man One Woman and Happy New Year) which could all be removed and ISHFIY, DSMD and perhaps the two new songs added (but only if they’re both going to be issued as singles, which I doubt). A vinyl version would need to be four discs. The final home for them will be Voyage, as they are from the Voyage sessions, but I agree, adding them to that straightaway might not be a good idea commercially. The 1994 Thank You For The Music set was a good way of getting rare b-sides and unreleased tracks out there before adding them to as bonus tracks to studio albums a few years later. Whatever they do with these new songs initially is OK with me, as long as they get released.

Why not add DSMD, ISHFIY and the two new songs to ABBA Gold? Can’t be done unless you remove tracks, as it’s at the 80-minute maximum already. Gold should be left as it is. And I’d reluctantly say the same for More Gold. 30 years on, these have become historical compilations in themselves.

A new compilation titled "ABBA - The Singles, The First 50 Years".
<groan>
Sorry.
(Remember how obviously overly-optimistic that 1982 title sounded, when we pretty much knew in our bones back then that there'd definitely not be another 10 years?)

Whatever they do with these new songs initially is OK with me, as long as they get released. I was thinking in terms of reissuing the original release of 'The Singles' - same title and artwork, but revised to include pivotal singles that were omitted at the time plus newer tracks. Apologies for not being clearer. I guess that would inevitably mean including "Thank You For The Music" (sigh) but I've always been enamoured of the original 2 LP/2 cd set so would love to see a deluxe treatment applied. It always fascinated me that whilst they understandably opted for the major singles (in the process ignoring tracks such as "Honey Honey" and others I have mentioned earlier), "So Long" and "I Have A Dream" were included. I didn't realise they were both international hits. I don't have a problem with a revised 'Definitive' or 'Essential' compilation being issued and I expect this would be a much more straightforward proposition in terms of determining what needed to be removed to make room for the newer work. Whilst I don't think an expanded 'Voyage' is yet on the cards, certainly a tenth anniversary edition would be the logical home for any tracks recorded during this album's sessions. Ultimately, I agree with you Alan - as long as the new tracks are released - even if it's just via streaming platforms - I'm eager to hear them.

Not so sure about The Singles. As they couldn’t fit all of them onto a vinyl album, they picked the 23 that had been released in most countries (hence why So Long is on it but not Honey Honey or Eagle). The omissions were all singles that hadn’t been released everywhere. Definitive/Essential filled in the blanks and was therefore an expanded The Singles in all but name.
I don’t think a new compilation is a great idea. Gold / More Gold swiftly saw off any competition, such as Number Ones (a pointless compilation if ever there was one) and The Definitive/Essential Collection. It’s therefore likely that any new compilation would be short-lived, even if it did include new tracks. Gold would quickly wipe the floor with it and send it packing with its tail between its legs.

The two new songs will I am sure find their way onto streaming platforms from day one. Just like the first 2 Voyage songs or TDBYC and UA an album is needed. As there won't be a new studio album it will have to be some sort of compilation or tagged in to Voyage.
Voyage deluxe This has grown in popularity since I posted yesterday! As stated by Foreverfan and Hometime there's not much interest in deluxe editions. We might only be talking 1000 UK sales or 10k globally. And as for waiting for the 10th Anniversary of Voyage - many ABBA fans might be dead!
More Gold revamp You could simply add 4 Voyage songs and take 4 songs out. B sides I Wonder, Lovelight and Cassandra would be contenders for ditching. Personally I think a radical overhaul - which meant a new compilation was just that and sales not added from More Gold would matter for More Gold
Gold's status This is iconic and as Alan has stated, seen off rivals. It is also the longest running album in the UK Charts and 2nd best seller ever. For chart purposes acts can nominate one compilation album. Let's preserve this for Gold's unique status.
As Alan has also said a new compilation will be short lived but at least it will give a platform for the songs which might otherwise be lost if not collated to an album. Yes, even if people just stream an album.
Alternative Definitive Collection You could have the original recordings and feature songs made famous by Voyage or Mamma Mia
Or you could have alternate versions. The Voyage show songs with original vocals but live band recordings. The live recordings of STMF or OAOAO from the Dick Cavitt show for example. Plus the 2 unreleased Voyage songs. This would not be "yet another compilation"
Thank You For the Music type Box set. 3 Greatest Hits albums. Greatest Hits, Greatest Hits Volume 3 and the never released Greatest Hits 3 covering material from 1980 onwards.. Plus fourth disc of rarities. Bish. Bosh. Bash. Boom

[...] I don’t think a new compilation is a great idea. Would a compilation sell more or less than a deluxe version of Voyage? I think that will be a key consideration when it comes to mapping out releases for 2024. A compilation (as we've been imagining it) already has two hooks: it contains new material; it's (largely) reflective of the show. Voyage has both those hooks in that ISHFIY and DSMD are in the show, and it contains new music. They'd likely sell at the same price. They're not going to not release something to mark 50 years - a third hook for a compilation - so my money is on a compilation. And my money is also on that compilation being directed at people like us who bought multiple editions of Voyage. The more casual fan whose copy of Gold has become dogeared or stuck in the CD player of the old car might shell out for one. People who've travelled for the show might buy one as a souvenir - especially if the artwork is ABBAtar based. I don't honestly think there'll be too much stress expended on the tracklist. Madonna, Pet Shop Boys and virtually every other heritage act is releasing lavishly packaged multi-vinyl compilations these days, with compacted 1- or 2-disc editions included for the casual fan. At this point, I think that even we want Gold to continue to be an immortal being. I think it's better to view a new release - compilation or not - in the way ordinary people look at studio albums. Does it sound great? Does it look great? Are the collectors' editions lavish enough to make us consider flogging a kidney on the dark web? Will it hit No.1? With the 50th anniversary as part of the sales pitch, I can't see why it wouldn't. Ultimately, it adds to the list of No.1 albums. And it's better placed to receive glowing reviews than any previous compilation (assuming the curators don't make a donkey's dick of it). From Universal's point of view, the main consideration will be whether they recoup the costs - design, mastering, pressing, marketing and distribution. I can't imagine it'd be a loss-maker. Ultimately, I'd love for something truly unique and exciting to emerge. My imagination is limited to what we've all discussed so far, but maybe there's some innovation that we haven't considered. I think the biggest release will be something for the general public, but I also think there'll be more niche, fan-focused stuff too.

As I think about the way the songs could be released, I would appreciate a complete new 6 CD anthology.
First of all: to me ABBA GOLD is not up to date any more. Yes, it is keeping Universal craving money, but it is too old fashioned.
There should be a mixture of different categories:
1. The big hits of cause and main singles
2. B sides and famous album tracks
3. Alternate mixes and demo versions
4. Unreleased stuff, having the new songs and Just Like That
... and maybe some live versions

It’s a very odd comparison that you’re making, gassi. ABBA Gold is a catch-all for the masses. A six-disc anthology is a niche release for fans only. 1 and 2 have been done many times, notably in the 1994 Thank You For The Music 4-CD set. We seriously don’t need to go there again. 3 and 4 are much more interesting. I’m kind of hoping we may see something like this next year, but I wouldn’t put money on it.
