How a documentary is structured has consequences.
Having "The Story of ABBA" with a chronological list of events and releases is a bit like a shopping list and no depth or analysis.
Focussing on 1976-80 is the Glory Years and glosses over more difficult years. But then focussing on the much talked about (on this forum anyway) decline 1981/82 and Voyage return wouldn"t seem celebratory.
It will be interesting to see if the documentary is an honest assessment, including flaws and criticisms or a hagiography
To quote from ABC in Australia about the documentary,
"The BBC has commissioned ABBA: Against The Odds, which will look at the band's very fruitful period from 1976 to 1980, unearthing rare archival footage and exploring the surprising negativity the singers faced in their home country."
My understanding is they got negativity from music journalists and radio stations but amongst the public they were extremly popular in Sweden especially in selling albums.
It is the critics, or most of them, who have been proven wrong. ABBA were never cool. But they produced great music. Their fans didn't like them, they loved them. And even many who were sniffy about ABBA concede they like some songs.
Not giving their opinions or being in the tabloids a great deal added a sense of mystery and added to their appeal. Less is really more.

That's great. I mentioned before that I hoped it might have a limited cinema run. And so it seems it will! These music documentaries are wonderful to behold on the big screen, not just for the magnificent big-screen visuals, but for the amazing aural component. The sound systems they have in cinemas now would benefit ABBA's recordings phenomenally. I hope some fans can make it to those screenings. They'll be amazing!

Think about it: This is the first time ABBA are part of a feature film since "The Movie", in 1978. Pretty noteworthy...
And treated with respect, as a serious subject worthy of exploration as something of cultural/artistic importance.
Such respect is long overdue, but it's finally here.

ABBA does not appear on its own tribute in SVT
'Joint decision' The 50th anniversary is also celebrated in England
Updated 08.59 | Published 05.55
When ABBA is celebrated at a live gala from Cirkus in Stockholm, the main characters themselves choose not to show up.
This was announced by the group's manager Görel Hanser in an email to TT.
On Saturday, April 6, it will be 50 years since ABBA made music and television history, when they won the Eurovision Song Contest with "Waterloo" in 1974.
It is celebrated with a gala evening on SVT, which is broadcast from Cirkus in front of an audience. The live TV gala will be the culmination of a whole week where the group is celebrated on SVT, but the media-shy ABBA members will not participate in the celebration themselves.
In an email to TT, Abba's manager Görel Hanser writes:
"Agnetha, Frida, Björn and Benny have jointly decided to decline all requests in connection with the anniversary." The ABBA members will also not be present during the gala evening at Cirkus, she explains.
ABBA will be celebrated on SVT throughout the week until Saturday, April 6. During the gala, "some of Sweden's most prominent artists" will perform and perform the group's classic songs. On the same night, the documentary "The Tale of Abba" will also be released, which focuses on the period between the album releases "Arrival" (1976) and "Super trouper" (1980).
The 50th anniversary is also celebrated in the UK, where the BBC, among others, invests in documentaries, concerts and radio programs to draw attention to the group.

The Royal court announcement
March 21, 2024
HM The King has decided on the granting of honorary grants for exceptional contributions
For the first time in almost 50 years, the Royal Orders of Chivalry have been awarded to Swedes for exceptional contributions. The recipients of the Order have been nominated by the public and the name proposals have subsequently been prepared by the Council of the Order at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. His Majesty's Order. The Government has today supported the proposed names, and His Majesty The King has subsequently made the formal decision on the conferring of the order.
Through an agreement with broad political consensus, the Riksdag has decided that the four Swedish royal orders of chivalry will once again be awarded to Swedish citizens. These awards include the four royal orders of chivalry: the Order of the Seraphim, the Order of the Sword, the Order of the Polar Star and the Order of Vasa. The purpose of the new ordinance is to enable the state to recognize and reward meritorious efforts that go beyond what can be expected of a person in the area in which the person works. For example, it can be a courageous life-saving effort, a scientific achievement or an effort of great importance to Sweden
The awards that have been decided on today are as follows:
Order of the Sword Royal. Order of the Sword Commander Grand Cross
Lieutenant General Dennis Gyllensporre For Outstanding Leadership in War-Like Conditions in Mali

Colonel of the 1. Ulf Henricsson For very exemplary leadership under war-like conditions in the former Yugoslavia

Commodore
Actress Eva Rydberg For long and successful involvement in the performing arts
Knights First Class

On 31 May, The King will hold an award ceremony, at which Swedes who have made "exceptional contributions" will be honoured with orders of chivalry.
According to the Royal Court, this is the first time in 50 years that these will be distributed, and the petition has been drawn up in consultation with the government.
On it is Lieutenant General Dennis Gyllensporre, who will be Commander of the First Rank of the Royal Order of the Sword "for outstanding leadership under war-like conditions in Mali".
The list also includes the ABBA quartet Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agneta Fältskog, who 50 years after winning Eurovision with "Waterloo" will become commanders of the first class of the Order of Vasa.
"For very outstanding contributions to Swedish and international musical life," the court writes in a press release.

The first review is not encouraging...
Abba – against all odds Photo | Rogan Productions
Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Agnetha Fältskog and Björn Ulvaes won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo, but it was far from obvious that it would lead to more success for Abba.
Abba documentary interestingly portrays the pop-hostile 70s, but is far from the ultimate film about the ultimate pop group. By Frederik Hoff
After the victory with Waterloo at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, Abba almost instantly became Europe's most popular music group.
And looking at Abba today, it seems inevitable that the well-oiled pop machine would become a huge success.
But with the documentary Abba – against all odds, the British director James Rogan shows how unlikely it really was.
The award-winning creator of music films such as 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything has accessed a treasure trove of archive material from twelve different broadcasters, including DR, to tell the story of Abbas's Napoleonic world conquest in the late 70s.
The documentary takes shape especially as a portrait of a very special time in music history, when it was actually a real problem for artists to be too broadly appealing.
As early as 1974, it was a tradition that Eurovision winners were never heard from again once the first ones had won. And in the music press, it was pretty much only rock that got anything other than perfidious slurs as a reward for the trouble.
Worst of all, it happened to Abba, who were regarded as hideously calculating folk opium produced by two money-grubbing pop boys and their wives. The many interview recordings from Abbas's heyday show again and again four talented musicians who have to put up with being asked only how much they earn.
The group is even unfortunate enough to venture into disco music – with hits such as Voulez Vous and the queer club hit Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) – just as the disco sucks movement starts.
In 1979, hundreds of disco records were burned at halftime of a baseball game in Chicago in a homophobic, racist demonstration disguised as musical puritanism.
Punk was the new thing, and it stood in total contrast to the well-coiffed Swedes in permanent relationships. Even though the Sex Pistols and the proto-punk Pete Townsend were Abbas' biggest fans, as the film wittily reminds us.
In the late 70s, art had to be political to be valuable.
An interesting point because the same can be said to some extent about the 2020s. Apart from the fact that today there is also respect for the more subdued political: the image of the divorces and life crises of the Scandinavian middle-class existence, which can be found in the best of Abbas's texts.
Abba - Against All Odds demonstrates quite effectively that Abba became great in spite of the zeitgeist and not because of it.
The correct conclusion must then be that when Benny, Björn, Agnetha and Anni-Frid managed anyway, it was because of their artistic strength. The problem is that Jamens Rogan is apparently not particularly interested in Abbas' music.
The film does contain the inevitable hit parade, but although it's worth the price of the ticket just to hear Knowing Me, Knowing You on cinema speakers, the tracks are mainly background noise.
The documentary never delves into Abba's impressively advanced compositions or Rutger Gunnarsson's all-important bass playing.
This time, too, there is no explanation of how Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Agnetha Fältskog came up with the magical consonance, where the voices in unison are completely glued together and sound bigger than anything else when they harmonize.
The two uncommonly well-disciplined pop stars are forever breathtaking to watch, as are Benny, the shy genius, and Bjørn, who looks wonderfully awkward no matter where you place him.
But the film is far too busy and prioritizes time poorly.
As soon as you get caught up in, for example, the famous concert at Wembley Stadium in 1979, it's over and we have to move on to the next scene about broken marriages and the hatred of the press.
Three times it is explained that Agnetha is afraid of flying. But no time is spent on Abba's last and most experimental album Visitors, which is otherwise the most obvious argument for taking the group seriously.
Abba – against all odds had its world premiere at the Cph:Dox festival, where the film is highlighted as "the ultimate film about the ultimate pop group". The latter is probably true. But the definitive story of all that Abba was and could do remains to be told.

^^^oh dear....
If what's written is to believed, ( no reason to doubt) ... this 50th anniversary is turning into a bit of a damp squib isn't it... unless like a magician they pull the rabbit out of the hat at the end...... Like I've mentioned before, I still have hope of something bigger than what we have got / heard... I'll be first in line to admit I was wrong but nothing exciting so far, for me anyhow.....Book, Documentary, Show, Waterloo..... all/ appear to be a disappointment so what will it take to excite me.....or am I being to harsh, different strokes for different folks come to mind....
Just release some new music and say goodbye.............

The first review is not encouraging... It sounds pretty good to me, actually, despite it not venturing into some areas like the girls' vocals or the recording process. It's impossible to cover every aspect of the group's career and strengths in the space of ninety minutes. Rogan decided to concentrate on "the world (as it was in the 1970s) vs ABBA" angle, and the reviewer seems to be saying he succeeded. Not a bad review at all. I'm looking forward to it immensely.

It actually sounds good to me, too. I get the feeling that the launch point is the acceptance that ABBA's music is solid gold brilliance but other nonsense got in the way of its appreciation. So it's not an analysis of the music or the recordings or the performances, but the story of a genius group triumphing against the odds. Other documentaries are clearly needed - especially to delve into the music, its creation, its longevity. That would be an opportunity to look at the brilliance of The Visitors, possibly even as a standalone episode. Maybe something biographical that sidesteps the tabloid factoids, too.
But now I'm wondering how much overlap there might be between Against The Odds and When ABBA Came To Britain.

... now I'm wondering how much overlap there might be between Against The Odds and When ABBA Came To Britain.
Me too. But only a tiny bit, on second thoughts.
The same story always comes out quite differently, with its own distinct flavour, when told by another person. I expect "When ABBA Came To Britain" will most probably have its own unique take. It might touch more on the group's internal dynamic as the years went by, during each subsequent trip. The people interviewed, who were working with ABBA on their tours and appearances in Britain, might mention noticing subtle (or not so subtle) differences in, say, Benny's and Frida's interactions in 1982 compared to how they were acting in 1974, or how the mood had soured and the group's energy had gone while they still struggled to keep up a happy facade. Perhaps the episode will contrast their 1976 Arrival album promotional visit with the one they did to promote "ABBA -The Singles...". "We're not breaking up. No!" say the boys, almost in unison, on that tv show, while both look twitchy, obviously bored, like they're dying to get this appearance over so they can get as far away as possible from their two ex wives who're sitting - awkwardly - much too close to them, on that sofa.
(I've forgotten if there's been a definite announcement about an ABBA episode of "When [...] Came To Britain". Has there?)
Speaking of overlap!! at least both documentaries are shaping up to be a huge improvement on all these EXTREMELY samey, boring, predictable, corny, cheesy, B-list celebrity infested pieces of absolute dross we've been fed over and over again these last 20 years. Those ABBA/Mamma Mia! 10 and 20 year "celebration" tv specials were absolutely dreadful! It was practically the exact same show again and again, just repackaged. I'll take overlapping over repackaging any day!

Did ABBA go to Britain in 1980 or 1981? I don't recall ever seeing any TV footage of those years. I believe,ABBA didn't travel to the UK in those days, they also didn't visit Germany. There is a TV appearance available from France with TWTIA, but e.g. their big appearance in the German TV Show Showexpress was cancelled because of this Kidnapping Thread. Instead, the German TV ZDF flew the decorations to Stockholm and they performed via Satellite. And in the UK, "Words and Music" was produced but it was filmed in Stockholm. In 1981, they did the Dick Cavett Show (produced in Stockholm) and few Interviews for e.g. Dutch TV, but nowhere did they perform any The Visitors tune. So, all in all, the big international show travel began for ABBA in 1974 and ended with the Japan Tour in the first quarter of 1980, I think.
