A reconstruction of a candid image of Frida - could use some shadowing but adequate enough. <3

If looks could kill... ...ABBA would be remembered today as one of the greatest pop trios ever to come out of Scandinavia!

If looks could kill... ...ABBA would be remembered today as one of the greatest pop trios ever to come out of Scandinavia! One of my 'ABBA counterfactuals' (a thread I keep meaning to start) would be 'ABBA as a trio'. There are several entry points for this counterfactual. There was that early tour that the three of them did without Frida: what if it had been a great success, and what if Frida's clashing commitment had led to an apparently more promising solo path? There's the absence of Agnetha when she was pregnant in 1973: what if she had then preferred to be home with her baby, rather than touring northern Europe struggling to establish ABBA? Then there's the scenario in which Hasta Mañana was chosen for the ESC rather than Waterloo; it was a close decision by all accounts, and it may well have won, with Frida appearing to the world to be more or less an anonymous backing singer! Finally, Agnetha was not averse to threatening to quit the group; I have read an interview in which she admits that she would occasionally use this threat as a way to try to wrest control of the work/life balance; what if her bluff had been called?

To be perfectly serious, no, I don't think it would have been the same thing at all. This was truly a case where the the sum was much bigger than the parts, just as with The Beatles (without further comparison). One of the things I like with Björn in interviews is how he stresses the pure happenstance of the couples' meeting at the right time, without making it sound like false modesty. Much as us hardcore fans like to emphasise the harmonies, the production value etc., there's no denying that a blonde and a brunette on the same stage and the fact that they really were two romantic couples, and "ordinary" ones to boot (a fact that Frida often mentions as important in their appeal, I think movingly so) were an integral part of the equation.

When Ola Lager isn't available, and when Anders Hanser is out... Heinz Angermayr totally made Frida look gorgeous!
