 When norwegian newspaper Adresseavisas readers chose ABBA as their favourite international group 1975, the music supervisor of the paper tried to book a meeting with the group. Because the lack of time for the group that prooved to be difficult, he sent the awards to Polar offices instead. He got this picture sent back, where all the groupmembers hold their award diploma in their hands. |

Very familiar of course, to those who grew up with the UK gatefold of The Album, but still a terrific and powerful group photo; one of the best. The togs, the smiles - relaxed but contained, the composition (Benny breaking the full-on symmetry and lending a bit of dynamism; Agnetha's wrist absentmindedly crossed over Frida's), the somewhat 'bleachy' or over-exposed look, giving it an airy, vaporous feel. Plus, it's ABBA taken when they were at the pinnacle. Looking at it you can almost feel it again, as it was then. |

It's always been one of my favourite pictures of the group. As a teenager, they looked so exotic/"foreign" to me here. They're dressed casually but there's something stylish about them, too. This is the ABBA I like, not so much many of the gaudy stage costumes. It disproves the myth that ABBA couldn't look cool and classy when they wanted to. Frida looks particularly sultry here. At the time, Agnetha's sunglasses seemed the height of sophistication to me and I noticed her hand on Frida's arm straight away all those years ago and was intrigued. The image of them all had quite a profound effect on me at the time. I'm not sure how best to describe it. When I look at it, I often get a strange taste in my mouth and extremely vivid memories that I feel in my stomach. Yes, I know that doesn't make much sense but I believe this is where our emotions lie- in the stomach. That's our "heart". Anyway, I 'hear' Eagle and many other songs from The Album in my mind's eye. I can hear the crackle of the needle on the vinyl from back then and I can also get the most fleeting of scents that take me me back to that time. I don't have the vocabulary to adequately explain it but it's almost tangible and yet it's impossible to explain- the memories float away like ether on the wind. For what are mere seconds, I am instantly transported back in time and I "feel" the age I was then (13 or 14). It's so momentary and impossible to grasp and keep hold of. It's almost like a supernatural experience. I'm not a religious person or even a spiritual one but it's experiences like this that make me believe there is more to life than what we can possibly know.
And all from a single image of a pop group from long, long ago! It's certainly evocative.
