THE 'GUARDIAN RANKING OF ABBA SINGLES
One Site has pointed out that 'The Guardian' Critics have put 'S.O.S.' in 1st place, yet 'Billboard', (recently), 'only' put it in 12th place. The 2 ABBA Lists are compiled in different ways. 'The Guardian' one is based on how good their Critics thought the Singles were. The 'Billboard' List was based on how well they did in the USA Hot 100.
If ABBA's 19 UK Top 10 Hits were Listed, according to Points in the Top 10, then 'S.O.S.' would only be in 17th place. Just ahead of 'Summer Night City' - 18th and 'Lay All Your Love On Me' - 19th. 'S.O.S.' is far better than that. Its UK No.6 Position, in 1975, was because people here were still unsure of ABBA, at that time. I'd have re-issued it in April 1976 - when ABBA became huge - and it would have risen to No.2 or No.3 in the Top 10 - with 'Fernando' at No.1, at the same time.
Just as 'Holiday' by Madonna was a UK No.6 Hit in 1984. She became huge in 1985, so it was re-issued and it got to No.2 - with her 'Into The Groove' at No.1, in that same Chart/Week.
