Hi, It's me again ! I am a loyal fan of ABBA but cannot stand the movie "Mamma Mia" and its sequel. Both films really tarnish ABBA's credibility and actually I think make a mockery of the band. I did get the chance to see the first film in 2008 and all I can say is that it was truly cringeworthy and very disappointing. Anyone who thinks that the actors can sing are misguided and deluded. They make a shamble of the songs. Thank goodness I avoided the sequel. Torture to my ears !

I very much agree. The films are truly awful. They're EMBARRASSING. They're some kind of 'ABBA cash cow' now, though, and have made many people very rich.
However....Amanda Seyfried CAN sing, even if her warbling is not to my taste. She's like a singing budgie.

I remember I loathed the whole Mamma Mia idea from the very beginning, refusing to see the stage musical (actually I haven't yet) but with time I somehow got accustomed to it and I must admit (though I've never thought anyone would hear me say such thing) that I liked the first movie quite a lot when I first saw it in the cinema. Yes, the choice of actors could have been (or rather should have been) better but I was able to accept them all (with the only exception of Pierce Brosnan, who's singing is really embarassing). Meryl Streep sings very well in my opinion and it was a huge mistake that she was not in the sequel. Amanda Seyfried can sing too, but I don't like her voice much too.
The sequel is another story. I remember it made me feel very uncomfortable as it was apparent that they sort of took the songs that they wanted to have in and built a story around them, no matter how unreal or absurd it may seem… However, I still like some of the songs from the second movie, even though it's better to listen to them than to actually watch the accompanying scenes. For example Knowing Me, Knowing You is very good and the film version of My Love, My Life I like actually more than ABBA's original. The only flaw is the lyrics…
