In 1979 the 1960's Record Review TV Show - 'Juke Box Jury' - was revived on UK TV.
Each Week a panel of 4 Judges gave their views on several New Singles. Then they had
to say if they were going to be a 'Hit' or a 'Miss', in the UK Charts.
From 9:45 to 15:20 they Review ABBA's 'Angel Eyes' in this Edition.
Noel Edmonds, (UK DJ), is presenting it. He mentions that ABBA had not had a UK No.1 Single since
1978. However, at the time, Elaine Paige had yet to have one. Johnny Rotten never had a No.1 Single,
in his entire Career...
Johnny Rotten hates it, but says it will be a Hit. Elaine Paige, Alan Freeman, (UK DJ) and Joan Collins say
that they don't really like it. All 3 of them say that it is not going to be a Hit! Even though everything ABBA
released, at that time, always went into the Top 10. Some Hits were bigger than others, but to predict that
'Angel Eyes' was going to fail to get into the UK Charts, shows how little 3 of the Panel knew about ABBA's
success...(Of course, Elaine would hope that this would be forgotten, when Benny & Bjorn gave her the
biggest Single of her career, with 'I Know Him So Well', in 1984/1985. She'd never been above No.6 until
then).
The Show also asks several people, at a UK Pub, what they think of it, and most seem unimpressed.
Which causes Noel to wonder who buys ABBA Records. (As the Show makes it look like there are not
many people who like ABBA).
It did this, in the UK Top 10 - as a Double 'A' with 'Voulez-Vous'. (Notice that 'Voulez-Vous' was not mentioned).
5 - 3 - 5 - 9 (It was a No.5 Hit in the New Musical Express and Melody Maker Charts...).
