Hi, Did anyone happen to watch the ABBA documentary on Channel 5 last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it and Carl Magnus Palm did a great job.

This is what I like about “ us” the diversity of what we think is good and bad or just plain indifferent... I fall into the latter, indifferent.. The only real interest and I suspect many didn’t know that Mamma Mia was offered to Brotherhood Of Man, But they were to busy !! So fate dictated ABBA would record it... The programs basis was around three definitive tracks which according to the programme defined ABBA, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and The Winner Takes It All. Carl Magnus Palm, was ok, just bearable, with a smugness about him ( I don’t blame him really , we’d all be the same if we had exclusive access) . A few celebrities having there pennies worth, over all it was ok, nothing really new, but that’s no big surprise, what is left to tell , and the future who knows..but it was a programme and no doubt boost sales of Gold” again” ... Followed by ABBA Live, so few hours of ABBA on tv.. can’t be a bad thing.... would I watch it again....no...

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I found the documentary interesting because of the musical trends at the time thus inspired Bjorn and Benny to compose three iconic classics. A much better programme than " When All Is Said And Done " which was probably the worst ABBA documentary I have watched. The acting was truly dreadful and I will never watch it again. I think it portrayed ABBA in a bad way.

The programs basis was around three definitive tracks which according to the programme defined ABBA, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen and The Winner Takes It All. Carl Magnus Palm, was ok, just bearable, with a smugness about him CMP's done good stuff down the years, and he's thorough and a stickler for details, but he's principally a journalist and a historian, so his ability to home in on and elucidate the musical magic of a song will be limited (get Howard Goodall in next time!). Also, I think a fresh mind, voice and perspective is needed at this point, CMP having become absorbed into the ABBA media/business nexus to the extent of being in effect their go-to media liaison factotum, these days, a sort of Derek Taylor figure. And another thing: if I'd have been involved with this show, I'd have made them pick three different ABBA songs, for starters. I would never have imagined this a few years ago, but even stone classics such as SOS, Knowing Me, Knowing You and The Name Of The Game are in danger of becoming 'cult' tracks, in effect - forever in the shadow of the ubiquitous Mamma Mia (has to be picked because of the spin-offs and tie-ins); Dancing Queen (a golden track for sure, but could probably do with being 'rested' for a while for these sorts of TV specials, or at least dealt with more summarily) and The Winner bloody Takes It All (a song by now as omnipresent and migraine-inducing as that other pub karaoke/drunken last-bus-home shout-along staple, I Will Survive).

The only real interest and I suspect many didn’t know that Mamma Mia was offered to Brotherhood Of Man, But they were to busy !! So fate dictated ABBA would record it... I think I wouldn’t read too much truth in that. I would suggest they are deliberately mixing it up with Honey Honey being given to Sweet Dreams. Channel 5 viewers might have heard of Brotherhood of Man but Sweet Dreams would mean nothing. And as the segment was about Mamma Mia, Honey Honey would be irrelevant. Brotherhood of Man were together with their future Eurovision line-up in 1975, and they even had a big hit that year in Belgium and the Netherlands, but I’ve never read or heard anywhere else that they were offered Mamma Mia. It kind of is plausible, as ABBA didn’t want it as a single until RCA in Australia apparently pleaded with them, but as this is Channel 5, I wouldn’t bet my house on it being fact! They did a similar thing with Bang-a-Boomerang. The programme implied this was a “proper” single when in fact it was only released as such in France and perhaps a couple of other territories. Again, I’d say facts have deliberately been changed - the single they would really be referring to was So Long, but as there was no video for it (and there was for Bang-a-Boomerang) they changed facts to suit the visuals available to them. I wonder if Katie Puckrik really is a fan? Ever the cynic, I wondered if she’d been asked to stream ABBA Gold before her interview was filmed so she could appear to be knowledgeable. Agree on some of the other comments about Carl Magnus Palm. He’ll turn up for anything ABBA-related, but it would be nice to hear someone else’s take on it.

Regarding Brotherhood of Man, I have to agree, surely we would of heard of this “ fact” years ago... Again Bang A Boomerang, I wondered why the mention, even Man In The Middle was compared to Stevie Wonder !!
It may have something to do with my thoughts overall and being indifferent with the programme with so many inconsistencies or where did that come from..
I guess it’s only the fans that doubt these facts as vast majority of the viewing public on the night would’ve had no clue. You would have thought that the programme would have had to go through some ABBA screening process, but again with CMP , it all had to be true didn’t it !!!

In my opinion as Carl Magnus Palm said " The Winner Takes It All " is a stone cold classic just as DQ, KMKY and TNOTG. You are being unfair completely slating Agnetha's favourite song. I am leaving the forum as I am very upset about your comments. I have noticed that whenever I post my views someone else pours cold water over them. As for my Top 100 well you can forget it. Some of you are downright nasty !

Edmund, to get worked up about others' opinions about music, to take it personally because their views don't coincide with yours, is the way to have an unhappy life! What if someone developed an anxiety episode because of their love of Super Trouper and your outright dismissal of the song? Perhaps you would think that unfortunate but not a reason to hide away your opinion - and you'd be right.
