I've always thought of this as a slightly unusual release. It would be good to hear others' views?
From memory, I think there were 4 different versions - a standard, International, 18 track-CD, with a 2CD set featuring bonus tracks.
In the UK, it was a 19-track CD (with the addition of 'Ring Ring' and with the inclusion of the extended version of 'Summer Night City' as opposed to the regular version), plus a 2CD set along those lines. The UK 2CD version is the one I own. I have no idea what prompted the differences between the UK and International versions.
Chartwise, it did fairly respectably in a few countries, making the UK Top 20, and, as I recall, was a number 1 in New Zealand.
It was not very dissimilar from 'ABBA GOLD', all told, and so I guess was quickly forgotten as a 'brand', whereas 'GOLD' has continued to flourish.
I suppose the release capitalised on the interest generated by Madonna's 'Hung Up', which had been a hit the year before. I've always thought that there was a link here because 'Gimme Gimme Gimme' is the first track on the 'Number Ones' CD.
Did you buy it? Did you feel it was a necessary or useful release?

The Number Ones thing was being done for quite a few acts around that time. As you say, for ABBA it was quite a superfluous release as there were only the odd one or two tracks that were different to Gold.
The UK version having more tracks was again quite a common thing at the time. It came about because there was a perception that UK CD buyers were paying more for them than anyone else in the world. To make up for this, they added a few tracks.
I have the DVD version as it contained something not previously available on ABBA DVDs (I think it was their final performance as ABBA on the Late, Late Breakfast Show, not really related to the Number Ones concept).
Gimme Gimme Gimme opening the collection was a nice touch as it had originally done the same with Greatest Hits Vol 2, but yes, it was almost certainly because of the then-recent success of Madonna’s Hung Up.
Ring Ring on it was an oddity - I don’t think it was number one anywhere? The Swedish version was number one in that country, but it’s a tenuous inclusion.

The only version of Number Ones I own is the DVD which I bought only for the extras… Otherwise I thought of it as a completely unnecessary release, maybe because it came out at a time when my interest in ABBA was at one of its lows.

Gazman, I am so glad that you have raised the subject regarding the release of the compilation Number Ones which regrettably is not one of my favourite ABBA compilations. I have always though that it was sort of rush-released ( if you know what I mean ) with the songs thrown together very haphazardly. The recordings are far from brilliant and sound somewhat distorted and compressed. Definitely not one I would recommend purchasing. However the compilation I really detest is " Absolute ABBA ". Truly, an abysmal tracklist and very poor quality sound re-production. I believe this collection was released in 1988. " ABBA Gold " is the most popular and best-selling ABBA compilation which indeed continues to sell by the truck-load. Let us hope we finally get to hear the new songs this year.

Do you know, I'm not even sure if I bought this? It could be in a box somewhere. I do recall seeing it and I wasn't massively impressed. It just seemed like a cash-in. There are a few ABBA compilations where I just thought, "Ew, tacky."

Ring Ring on it was an oddity - I don’t think it was number one anywhere? The Swedish version was number one in that country, but it’s a tenuous inclusion. The English-language version of 'Ring Ring' went to number 1 in Belgium. I think that must have been the justification for its inclusion.

Oh, silly me... just about every ABBA single was number one in one of the Belgian charts!
