Fans of ABBA may be interested in The Music Chronicle 1980. This is the first in a series of year-by-year reviews which documents the best sellers, the major festivals and tours, the award winners, the films and television shows, the industry’s financials, the headline news stories and the unlikely trivia which go together to create the vibrant and diverse British music scene.
With chapters covering Singles, Albums, Live Music, the Music Industry, Music & the Media, Global Music, Awards and Music People, plus a Review of the Year, the Music Chronicle presents in a series of about 200 lists, charts and short articles, all aspects of popular music from a single year.
The benefit of hindsight makes it possible to pick out the musical trends of the period, the debuts, break-ups, births and deaths which had most impact, and the singles and albums which have endured. The majority of the lists and all of the graphics have been compiled exclusively for the Music Chronicle, using original research that has sourced information from both contemporary and more recent publications.
ABBA appears in 22 of the commentaries, tables and graphics in the book, and The Music Chronicle provides a thorough context surrounding ABBA’s success in 1980.
Who were the biggest selling songwriters and producers of 1980 ? Which festival had the largest attendance ? What were the critics’ favourite albums of the year ? What were the biggest American hits that failed to chart in the UK ? Which artists sold more records in 1980 than they did in any other year ? What breakthrough technologies were launched that year ? What music was on television at Christmas ? How much of the cash spent on an LP went to the artist ? Who are the most successful musical stars that were born in 1980 ? Which Greatest Hits album contained the most hits ? Which number one single is now worth £50 ? Which victim of identity theft was detained on suspicion of fraud ? Which performer on a number one single is the sister-in-law of a member of Oasis ? Who adapted Shakespeare to criticise their Government on a hit ? Which best sellers list places the Three Degrees at #1 and AC/DC at #2 ? What did the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, Chinese literary classics and Fibonacci have to do with popular music ? All of these questions are answered amongst the wealth of information that builds to tell the complete story of popular music in 1980.

Hi. Thank you for posting this. I'm fascinated when it comes to statistics with reference to music and record sales particularly ABBA. Are copies of The Music Chronicle 1980 still available to buy online ? I would be very grateful if you could kindly let me know.

Thank you to everyone who has already purchased a copy of the Music Chronicle 1980. We have now dispatched copies to France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway, as well as customers in Britain.
Here are some of the comments about it which have been posted on various websites and forums:- “A great addition to my music book library. The content is outstanding. I'll happily recommend it to people.”
“Sean seems to have covered all the important and interesting musical facts and events of the year very well. I get the feeling I may be referring to this book often in the future and look forward to seeing other years in the series.”
“I think what I like best about it is not the pure stats. The book eschews what you can find on the internet. The joy is in the value added. So some rather intriguing lists, for example the connections of session supergroup Sky, and the reasons behind some otherwise surprising re-issues. The Music Chronicle is, for want of a better word, whimsical.”
“I study the UK Charts avidly, but there were many details in the book that I was unaware of. I cannot praise the book enough.”
“I ordered a copy of this and it really is a fantastic source of information for the price.”
“Amazing value and hours of reading and digesting! Couldn't even begin to imagine how much work went into this!”
“The 1980 Book is excellent. I highly recommend it, as it is well worth its price. I urge every UK chart fan to buy the 1980 book. It is a great addition to any chart books collection.”
The Music Chronicle 1980 is available for £5.95 + P&P from eBay, www.ebay.co.uk/itm/The-Music-Chronicle-1980-facts-lists-charts-about-the-1980-UK-music-scene/133265515801

Sean - My On-Line 'Chart Expert' Friend, tells me that he's finished, about a 3rd, of his 1981 UK Chart Book. He hopes to finish it, before 2020 ends. It is Sean, who has told me, that 'The Visitors' is the UK's 4th Best Selling Album, of 1981, when the final Sales Week of 1981, is added in - W/E 2nd January 1982. It was 17th, for 1981, without that final Sales Week...

^^^thats fascinating regarding The Visitors, and ending up being the 4th best selling album of 1981. I hated how it was the norm for these compilers to end the year “early” usually missing out the last 3 weeks, which can be the best selling period of any given year, Christmas of course being a factor in sales. 1980 for a long time had Super Trouper album as the 4th best selling album before adding in final weeks and ended up being the best selling album. The same can be said for ST single , originally 28th to actually finish in 4th...The Winner Takes It All actually suffered as it dropped from 16th to 18th...... It took ages for chart books to up date, will the same happen to 1981 and The Visitors? Also will One Of Us , get it’s credit of being in end of year( albeit like I Have A Dream , sales were spread over 2 years).
good news though if acknowledged...

'The Music Chronicle 1981' has now been Published. ABBA are featured in it several times. 'The Visitors' is - as anticipated - shown to be the UK's 4th Best Selling Album of 1981. That is up from the No.17 Position, that it was in, in the 'Official' UK Year End Top 100 of 1981, that was Published in early January 1982. It sold 570,000 copies in 1981, in its 1st 3 Weeks of release. Which were the final 3 Charts of 1981. Including a massive 200,000 UK copies, in the last Week of 1981. The 570,000 Sales were during its 3 UK No.1 Weeks. It is estimated that it has sold 850,000 UK copies, from December 1981, to the end of 2020. If anyone, (here), wishes to buy the 1981 Edition, here is the Link: link
