Hi All
Apparently, Cher is releasing a Spanish version of Chiquitita on Friday, proceeds to UNICEF, as ABBA's versions. One of my favourite songs, in both English and Spanish, I sing (?!) along to the Spanish one but do not understand any of the words! Will be interesting to hear what Cher's version is like. I'm sure I read somewhere that singing in Spanish is a bit easier for Swedish people, can't remember why? Maybe someone can elaborate? I guess whatever we think of the version, it's still for a good cause, so good on her. I do hope they have kept the instrumental part at the end!!
ABBA cheers me up during these current times, has anyone else felt the need to blast out the songs these days!! Especially Chiquitita, with the "you'll be dancing once again and the pain will end" part - we need that kind of message at the moment!

I wouldn’t have thought it’s easier for Swedish people to speak/sing Spanish. Both English and Swedish are from the same language group (Germanic) and Spanish is a Latin/Romance language, so I’d be surprised if there’s much advantage, unless it’s something to do with accents.
Is Cher definitely doing ABBA’s Spanish version? Just that they could have written another (wouldn’t seem much point though).

I can't find anything regarding the lyrics, but as you say, would make sense to use the same ones.

Bad gay that I am, I loathed Cher's "Dancing Queen" album. But I find myself absolutely charmed by her new single, the Spanish version of "Chiquitita" - it feels so honest and musical compared to her previous assault. I even find myself playing it on repeat!

I was really disappointed by the vocals. It’s like they were forced out of Cher’s mouth. Whereas in ABBA’s version, Frida and Agnetha’s voices had a much more natural flow. What happened in the 2nd verse? Did they forget the lyrics or do they mean something significant to UNICEF and the Coronavirus? However, I loved the instruments of it but as a whole, Cher’s version is missing something that ABBA’s version had.

The arrangement and the vocal delivery feel far warmer than any of her other covers. Cher is now in her 70s and the timbre of her voice on this track reflects that maturity. It's a little unfair to compare her performance to that of two women in their late 20s/early 30s, whose young voices will be naturally more elastic. In fact, it would be important to remember that ahead of the release of ABBA's new songs.... Given that the third verse in ABBA's version is just a repeat of the first, I have no real problem with the liberty taken here. I just wonder what she's saying! Anyone in a position to translate? |

I watched the video today and preferred it a lot more now. Overall, I think it’s a good cover.
