This article states that "Angeleyes" was one of the earliest songs Benny and Bjorn composed:

Completely incorrect of course, the song didn’t exist until 1978.
Still, it’s an interesting period article. Pity about the awful photo of Benny smoking. I know he did (as did most/all of the others apart from possibly Björn?) but still don’t like to see it, however much it was more acceptable then than now.

Perhaps they meant that Angeleyes was recorded early on after Lovers (Live A Little Longer), Summer Night City and The King Has Lost His Crown?

Bjorn smoked as well. I know this because there's a (BBC?) radio interview with him, a few years after ABBA had disbanded, and early on in the piece he asks the DJ "Do you mind if I smoke?", and he's relieved when the interviewer says yes. I think you can even hear Bjorn lighting up.
All 4 members smoked at one time or other.

Thanks jj, a little disappointed but not too surprised. It was more socially acceptable in the 1970s/80s than now, and I really shouldn’t be judgemental, but it was disappointing to see them smoking in the footage on the ABBA in Japan DVD. Agnetha especially had made a big deal about giving up after having tonsillitis, and I think even got involved in an anti-smoking campaign in the early 80s? Then to see her at it as late as 1978 was a bit of a let-down (especially as she had two young children). I appreciate it calms nerves and she/they didn’t do it all the time, but even so... (But I really don’t want to sound like I judge people based on smoking habits... I probably do though. )

In case anyone has wondered why Benny sometimes fiddles with his tongue in interviews in later years, it's because he's switched to 'snus' - a lovely Swedish habit, banned in the rest of the European Union, which basically consists in shoveling dirt into your piehole. A great hit with the ladies.

Angel Eyes was my favourite song on VV but I can't make my mind up between 4. Angel Eyes Voulez Vous, As good as New or IIWFTN.

Angeleyes is my favourite song on the Voulez-Vous album. I am glad it featured in the second Mamma Mia! film. It feels a little bit like a lost classic these days.

angeleyes became my favorite ABBA song very early on together with Move On. Its always in my top 5. I would have wanted it performed in Mamma Mia in a less funny/slapstick way.

I think Mamma Mia movie version is absolutely appalling.
No offence but the songs given to Julie Walters for these films are intended as pure slap-stick to keep the old grandmas in the audience chuckling away.
Some of the Mamma Mia movie songs are done very well, such as ‘Why Did It Have To Be Me’ and ‘I’m Still Waiting For You’ but Angeleyes was royal butchered by the blue-rinse brigade.
The real version of the song was sadly under-appreciated by Benny and Bjorn; no video or tv performance made; ignored for ‘Gold’, not recognised by Channel 5 etc. I suppose like ‘More ABBA Gold’, at least they recognised it in the Mamma Mia follow up movie.
Yet I note that the song ranks high of people’s favourite ABBA song on here, and ranks at #8 spot in my own ABBA top 40.
It is a classic song on a high watermark ABBA album; catchy, melodic, deceptively upbeat against heart-breaking lyrics, amazing production stunning vocal performances as ever.
The song is without question one of ABBA’s G.O.A.T.

Angeleyes has its own thread?! Great, I've always loved the song. It doesn't get nearly enough recognition.
I enjoy some of the content on TikTok (ABBA-related, political, humour, you name it) but as is the way with the Internet there are some grim aspects to it. Speeded-up ABBA songs being one of the more annoying aspects. Also, trending dance crazes which every man and his brother has to leap on to.
