'ABBA Gold' -- A New UK Chart Record
'ABBA Gold' -- It looks like 'ABBA Gold' will still be in the UK Top 40, in today's Chart - the Chart of W/E 11th March. It is its 348th Top 40 Week. It is a New UK Chart Record, for the ABBA Compilation. The previous Record Holder was: 'The Sound Of Music'. That had 347 Top 40 Weeks. It got its 347th, on the W/E 3rd February 1973. It was at No.39, that Week. It has taken 48 Years and 1 Month, for that Top 40 Chart Record to be beaten. Ed Sheeran is in the List 3 times. Simon & Garfunkel and Oasis, are in the List twice...

Colin, I’m sure you have noticed that the UK Chart Company has been updating past year-end charts, presumably to make them more accurate by including the sales from the last few days of each year. For example, I saw the new 1981 year-end chart, which lists the top seller as Don’t You Want Me rather than Tainted Love. Are they doing this updating for all years? Also, I think that One Of Us was not in the updated top 50. Is that accurate?

Gary -- The OCC is claiming that they have got 'New Chart Data', that enables them to 'Revise' old UK Year End Sales Lists. However, their 1981 List has numerous errors in it. There are a few Singles, that should be in their 1981 Top 50, that are not in. The truth is, that when the final Week of 1981 is added in, 'One Of Us' jumps from No.59 for the Year, to No.31. The OCC don't even have it in the Top 50, in their 1981 List. The one that they claim includes all 52 Weeks of 1981.
Nor should the Human League Single be in 1st place. I've seen the Weekly 1981 Sales, of that Single, and it ends up at No.2 for the Year. Unable to outsell 'Tainted Love' by Soft Cell. However, it did sell more than Soft Cell, if you add in its 1982 UK Sales. That is what The OCC seem to have done - to get it into 1st place for 1981. However, you really should not be adding 1982 Sales to a List of 1981's Best Selling Singles. It is an inaccurate & silly thing to do.
We have been debating The OCC's 1981 List on the Haven Charts Site. My Friend Sean, knows all about the UK's 1981 Charts, as he's recently compiled a Book about them. He has detailed the errors in The OCC's 1981 List, at Haven.
Here is what he's Posted: This OCC list is so inaccurate it is scary.
HUMAN LEAGUE - Don't You Want Me
This only passed 1 million sales during the last week of January 1982, and that was based on shipments, not over the counter sales, although the difference would have been small by that point. The chart dated 6/2/82 would have been the first with it marked as platinum, had Record Mirror included symbols at the time. Record Business did, and in its publication dated 1/2/82 the platinum symbol is showing up.
Record Business commented on it breaking a million in the issue dated 8/2/82:-
Whilst Alan Jones in Record Mirror also mentioned it, and pointed out that one of Virgin's claims was wrong.
Now, I did wonder whether the OCC had made up its latest number of 1.15m to make its inflated all-time sales for the single work. It was listed on 1.43m in 2003, and the OCC has simply added downloads and streams to that total. But even if we believe the nonsensical 1.15m for 1981, we need to remember that it didn't make the Top 100 of 1982, which suggests maximum sales of 0.18m. And the 1995 remix only sold 0.04m at the old (too high) multiplier. So, if we take the most ludicrous number possible - i.e. 1.15m + 0.18m + 0.04m, we still only get to 1.37m. And nobody is going to suggest that it sold a further 0.06m in hidden back catalogue sales over the years. The real figure at the time was probably about 1.08m up to 2003, with just under 0.9m in 1981.
SOFT CELL - Tainted Love
Nor did this sell over 1m in 1981. It never actually got certified platinum (until 2019), but that doesn't mean it never reached 1m. However, Alan Jones never included it in his list of million selling singles that he occasionally included in his Chartfile column in Record Mirror. Its 2003 total was 1.135m, which should have included 0.12m from the 1991 remix. Which suggests its total 1980s sales were just over 1.0m, which seems about right. Remember, it had chart runs in 1982 and 1985, which would have added to its true 1981 total of about 0.89m.
CLIFF RICHARD - Daddy's Home
We are supposed to believe that Don't You Want Me jumped from #21 in the year end chart published in Record Mirror (but which missed out the last two weeks of the year), to #1 when the fantasy "missing data" is included. But Cliff Richard only climbed from #27 to #25, despite spending those two weeks at #2 in the chart. The difference between #27 and #25 would be less than 25,000 sales. So, the OCC is saying that for those missing two weeks at the end of 1981 the #1 single sold an average of over 300,000 per week, while the #2 sold around 10,000 per week. Ridiculous. The Human League's total is way too high, and Cliff's position (and by inference total) is way too low.
ABBA - One Of Us
As correctly pointed out elsewhere, One Of Us should be on the list. It was at #76 on the published year end list, meaning it required under 100,000 sales to break into the revised Top 50. But no, the OCC doesn't think it sold 100,000 during the two uncounted weeks it was at #3. This is, at least, consistent with ignoring Cliff Richard's sales. But it is also totally wrong. One Of Us was probably just outside the actual year end Top 30.
ADAM & THE ANTS - Ant Rap
Same as ABBA. This should be in the Top 50 too. It was at #79 with two weeks to go, and was #4 over Christmas.
MADNESS - It Must Be Love
Same as ABBA and Adam & the Ants. #78 with two weeks left, and selling well at #6 over the busiest time of the year.
My best advice. Ignore completely the OCC's latest list. It is utter garbage.

Thanks Colin.. It looks a thankless job trying to convince OCC otherwise, where facts point in the other direction. Its just a shame that its taken as gospel and will be in the likes of Wikipedia
