A few Weeks ago, Rob Copsey, of The Official UK Charts Company, did an Article on their Site. He somehow made a huge error in it, and said that '21' by Adele, has now almost sold 6 Million copies, in the UK! Which means that it is now the UK's 2nd Best Selling Album. His exact words, were that '21' has sold 'just shy', of 6 Million UK copies.
It is just not true. '21' is on 17 UK Platinum Awards, which is over 5,100,000 UK Sales, but less than 5,400,000.
Unfortunately, Rob's error, has now caused some 'Experts', to move '21' up from No.4 to No.2, in the List, of the UK's 'All Time' Best Selling Albums. Pushing 'ABBA Gold', (19 x Platinum = over 5.7 Million Sales), down from 2nd to 3rd place. The Beatles 'Sgt Pepper' drops from No.3 to No.4, in the 'All Time' List. (18 x Platinum = over 5,400,000 Sales). Yet, '21' is on 17 Platinum Awards, and it has yet to get anywhere near 5,400,000 Sales, which it will earn, if and when, it gets an 18th Platinum Award. So, Rob's 'Almost 6 Million' claim for '21', has cost 'ABBA Gold', its correct place, as the UK's 2nd Best Selling Album! ('Greatest Hits' (One), by Queen, is in 1st place, with 22 Platinum Awards = 6,600,000 Sales. Although 2 of those Awards - over 626,000 Sales - are really, from a 1994 Double Queen CD - 66,000, and a 2000 Triple Queen CD - 560,000. Those Sales were added to 'Greatest Hits' (One), in late 2006. 'Greatest Hits II' also got 626,000 Sales, from the 1994 and 2000 Compilations. 'Greatest Hits III' got 560,000 Sales, from the 2000 Triple CD. So, 3 'Greatest Hits' Albums, by Queen, have had 'Bonus' Sales added in!).
In the meantime - at present - 'ABBA Gold' has had its status, as the UK's 2nd Best Selling Album, taken from it, by an Album - '21' - that is nowhere near 'Gold's UK Sales!!! 'Gold' is approaching 5,800,000 UK Sales.

You're point about ABBA Gold is well-taken, Colin. But as someone who is not really much interested in Adele's music, I still find the achievement of '21' pretty impressive - a 'non-hits'/non-compilation album - in this era. The appeal of her music is simply not there for me - I'd far, far rather listen to ABBA Gold - but no denying the incredible success of '21'. But, even so, thanks for pointing out the inaccurate and misleading sales figures of '21' in relation to 'Gold'.

Richard -- I'm aware that UK and Global Album Sales have plunged in recent Years. That Adele's '21' did very well, to sell around 5,200,000 in the UK and 31 Million Globally. Her 3rd Album - '25' - had a huge impact too, but she seems unable to progress, in her Musical style. ABBA tried different things, with each Album, but Adele just sticks to the same old formula. Singing Songs about break ups etc., in a voice that many find rather whiny and depressing. An Artist can only get away with doing the same old, same old, for so long. I saw thousands of Reviews, (by 'The Public'), of '25', and a huge number of them, said that they were bored with her inability, to try anything, outside her 'Comfort Zone'. Many vowed never to buy any more Adele Albums, after '25' came out, in 2015. '25' was a huge Seller, but it sold 9 Million less than '21' - with a 22 Million Global Total. Its UK Sale, was over 3,560,000, but that was way down on '21' and its 5,200,000 UK Sale. We can expect her 4th Album, to have much lower Sales than '25'. She just thinks, that she can do the same style forever. People get tired of such things, in the end. I noticed that Germans, were particularly angry, at '25', being the usual Adele style...
Having said that, only Adele and Ed Sheeran can sell Millions of Albums, these Days. But, Ed Sheeran too, does not really try, to do anything different. We don't live in an Era of huge Acts, who experiment. Our Era is a very few, huge Acts, who play it safe. It is not a great time, for a varied and exciting Music Scene...
Hopefully, ABBA can return with an Album - to liven things up.

Totally agree with you, Colin, about today's most successful, samey, popular music. That's why I, too, would be so intrigued with what a new ABBA album would give us - if it were to happen. I'm sure about one thing: that it would be superior, melodically, to today's stuff.

'ABBA Gold' has now been, (correctly), moved back into 2nd place, in the Wikipedia List, of the UK's Best Selling Albums. 'Sgt Pepper', by The Beatles is, (correctly), back in 3rd place. '21' by Adele, is, (correctly), down from 2nd to 4th place. (Even though the UK Sales, at the side of it, are exaggerated by about 700,000). The Person who 'keeps' that Page, still has several Albums on 1 too few Platinum Awards - Queen should have 22, ABBA - 19, The Beatles - 18, Fleetwood Mac - 14, etc. link

Alas as said still needs updating, ( why it can’t be done at the same time is beyond me !!!) Adele is still showing 5.920 million compared to Abba on 5.580 million.... So position changed total not 🙁

I'm a bit confused - how could one man's error in an article result in the list actually changing officially?
Unless you just mean someone changed Wikipedia - which can be notoriously unreliable at the best of time.
I think I take all figures on Wikipedia with a pinch of salt - as I do the reported total ABBA albums sales of 385 million worldwide, or whatever....
