Hello, lovely to be here
I'm Tommy (18, from England) - Dancing Queen is my favourite, along with Take A Chance on Me, and I'd have to say Frida is my favourite of the group!
I just had a question about the build up of my favourite song, Dancing Queen. Like the best of ABBA's songs, Frida and Agnetha sing together in this, and although I can usually distinguish between them very well, I cannot put my finger on who sings what part of this song?
It sounds as though Frida mainly sings the verse ("you've come to look for a king" sounds very much like her to me), and then Agnetha sings chorus melody while Frida does the harmony. But a video posted by another member in a different thread seems to show a lot of the harmony is Benny and Björn? How is the song built up - does Frida actually sing any of the chorus melody or does she only harmonise? And does she lead the verses as I assumed she does?
Kind regards to all and many thanks

Hello Tommy, Dancing Queen is sung by both singers in unison - the famous "third voice" of ABBA. The reason you think you hear Frida lead the verses and Agnetha lead the chorus is the difference in their ranges - Agnetha as a soprano gets more prominent in the higher passages and Frida in the lower ones. Plus there are tons of harmonies from probably all four members to make it more confusing (and beautiful) ;-).

Thanks very much.

Thanks very much. You're welcome. Take A Chance On Me is another example of the joint lead vocal. Agnetha only sings a few lines on her own ("so much that I wanna do, when I dream I'm alone with you" and "you want me to leave it there, afraid of a love affair" - and the corresponding lines in the second verse). They used the joint lead vocal less and less on the later ABBA albums and they stopped doing it completely by the time of The Visitors.

Welcome to the forum, princetommy. DQ is also, very deceptively complex with layer upon layer of vocals and counter and backing vocals as well as melodies and counter melodies. I must admit every time I hear it I have to get up and dance. It is so infectious and one of the ABBA classics.
