I have been thinking when was the Abba Mag first released ? I was thinking that it was Sept/Oct 1977 as if I remember they talked about Abba The Album and the Movie and for the UK it was going to come out Dec 1977 but as we know that was put back to Jan 1978 for us in the UK and then the movie came out Feb 1978.

The shock and tragedy .. is I can remember the day I threw all my mags away, many years ago now, all in a rash moment in house moving....
Oh the stupid old me........

that happened to me partly more than 25 years ago when I was moving to a different continent and I thought I was never coming back and naturally I had to sell my stuff since I know my family is just going to throw them away. I distinctly remember posting an ad and a middle aged lady bought my ABBA for the record and ABBA in their own words, both from Pop Import. Thankfully, she didnt buy my ABBA mags, so i still have them! and I had to buy "for the record" and "in their own words" in the last 5 years from an online seller just for nostalgia.

I remember my brother coming home from his paper round, and he be brought me the Number 2 magazine, it was such a surprise, and probably at the height of my Abba infatuation, l managed to get hold of the first magazine albeit the front Cover was a little torn, and with moving l did sell the magazine's on eBay along with the gatefold sleeve I the Winner' unfortunately l did throw out a lot of my scrap books and memorabilia. I started to collect again for nostalgia the Abba Articles from lookin magazine which l really like:)

I was just three editions shy of a full set of magazines when I gave them away a couple of years ago. Sometimes I see them mentioned and get a momentary pang of regret, but then I see scans of them online and remember how little they actually contained.

A few years ago my brother gave me his nearly-complete collection of the ABBA Magazine, complete with the white-with-blue-text binders that you could get for them. As my brother has since died, I don’t think I could part with it. As with most print media I have, I rarely look at them. There are some decent interviews with ABBA in them, and at the time they were an important source of information. Six years was quite a long time for such a magazine to run. When it finally ended near the end of 1983, it pretty much meant there would be no more from ABBA. It was a sad day in our household when the last issue arrived in the post! tagaytay - I have ABBA In Their Own Words and ABBA For The Record too. Twice in fact! I bought both of them 20-odd years ago, but my brother gave me his along with the Magazine collection. One of In Their Own Words is hardback, the other softback. I’ve also got five of the six Annuals that the Magazine’s publishers put out every year (again courtesy of my brother). Those really were a bit pointless. Seemed to be less in them than the average edition of the Magazine!

Although they were his, I read them all at the time and could look at them anytime I wanted when we were still living at home, so I was glad he gave them to me.
(If he hadn’t, I dread to think what may have happened to them. His wife may have chucked them out without asking me! Or wanted to keep hold of them even though she had no interest).

And here is the collection. The loose Magazines were bought later in the 1980s so no room for them in any binder. Not sure why there are some stickers on the annuals. Perhaps my brother tried and failed to sell them in a car boot sale once! I seem to remember there were variations on the binder colours. Even in this set, the one on the far right has a darker blue print on it than the others, as it was bought later on. He also had the calendars (1981 to 1984) but these were never saved and usually got rid of when the year was over.

I ended up looking through them to see which ones I don’t have. There are apparently only two I don’t have at all - original numbers 4 and 30 - along with two with the covers missing (5 and 13). Number 30 is bugging me as I know we definitely had it originally. Got all 24 international editions. I’ve even found myself looking on eBay for the missing ones!
(The Magazine was numbered 1 to 41 - December 1977 to November 1981 - then when it became “international” they started at number 1 again, ending on number 24 - December 1981 to November 1983).

Thank you Alan that's a better heading. Yes I got the binders too as well as the Annuals and the calendars. As I remember I got Abba for the record from an ad in the Magazine. There were also ad's to get some of Frida's and Agnetha's Swedish solo LP's too, yes very happy times as a kid.

From memory, you could order these albums through the Magazine: Ring Ring Frida Ensam Tio År Med Agnetha Lycka Caramba (Michael Tretow’s album) Of those, my brother got Ring Ring and Frida Ensam. Ring Ring was the 1976 reissue.

This topic has certainly revived my interest in the Magazine, welshboy. I ended up hunting down some missing issues on eBay. Number 30 (Super Trouper album cover on the front) and number 13 (Voulez-Vous album cover on front). I know we had issue 30 originally but seems to have gone missing. Number 13 I’ve partially got but not with a cover. No sign of issue 4 on eBay, which I’m missing, and number 5 which has no cover, but scans of both plus other early issues can be found here: michaelmouse1967.wixsite.com/mag-a-zone/abba---magazinesFinally I rearranged my five ABBA Magazine binders. These were mostly in some kind of order but where my brother later bought back issues, these weren’t in order. They were still exactly as my brother (and my mum helping) had done them, so I wasn’t sure I should touch them (being as neither are still around) but in the end I decided to finally put them in proper order!

I missed all the magazines as a kid, though I may have been a little young to look for them in the newsagents. It wasn’t till late 80s that an abba pen pal let me read all of theirs, they had every one! I devoured them and it was like going back in time. I think I borrowed them twice. Then, in early 90s I saw the whole set for sale in the Record Collector, plus a couple bonus magazines, I had to have them! I can’t recall what I paid, but it was a lot. But they are all packed away in a cheap briefcase I bought for them, I’ve added a couple of special magazines since like the Gold one in 1992. I haven’t looked at them in a while, in fact, it’s sometimes a surprise when I bring my Christmas decorations out as they are next to the ABBA stuff. I do have some duplicates of abba magazine but I think it’s the international editions. Happy memories.

Yes I have not looked at the Magazines for over 30 years. All my Abba stuff is in the loft in a big box. The only things I have from the time are the LPs. As a kid all my bed room walls were covered in Abba posters. I have a lot of books in the day I got anything with Abba on. Yes very happy times.

One of the sad times was I started buying ABBA memorabilia when they split, I joined the fan club only to get a reply saying it was shutting, in 1984 on holiday in England, my Dad and I wandered round market stalls looking for ABBA, I got the 1983 annual!!! When my Dad asked another stall if he had ABBA, he replied “no one is interested in ABBA mate.” It crushed me.

Yes, those that weren’t around at the time won’t remember how quickly ABBA fell from grace. Yes, they may have sold some budget compilations in the late 1980s, but that was it. I shudder to think what would have happened had ABBA carried on.
The missing number 30 arrived today. Looking through it, I can remember that issue like it was yesterday. Not sure what happened to the original, seems to be the only one that went completely missing.
There was very little in the Magazines once you take out photos, ABBA Swap, Pen Pals and Dear ABBA, but I will have to look through the various interviews with ABBA sometime.
Apparently ABBA were booked to appear on the Mike Yarwood Christmas Show in 1980, for the second time. It got cancelled due to a kidnap threat against Björn and Agnetha’s children (and possibly also because of the murder of John Lennon providing a reminder of how mad some fans can be).
Searching on BBC’s Genome website, The Mike Yarwood Christmas Show was indeed shown at 20:05 on Thursday 25 December 1980. Max Bygraves was the guest, so he was presumably the replacement for ABBA.

You are right Alan there was not that much in these Magazines. But at the time it was all that we had as well as the Fan Club. I was thinking there was more in the Magazines. But looking at the link you posted for the mags I was shocked there is so little to them. But as a kid I loved getting the mags every month.
