Record Collector has a interview with Benny in the Christmas mag. Has anyone got it and has Benny got anything new to say ? and also any new photos as I don't want to waist my money on something I already know?.

There is an eBay listing that has photographs of the ABBA pages in it, including the interview. Just about readable. Item number 234803560665 (this is not a link).

I have it, welshboy . There's a Top 41 of ABBA songs as well and, along with the interview, it amounts to several pages. They call it a Top 40+1, because they have two songs at No.1. A few deep cuts and a B-side are fairly highly ranked. The writer seems to have referenced CMP's Complete Recordings throughout and I get the feeling he also had a good old listen to Undeleted. The interview with Benny is good. There were no revelations, and Benny seems charmingly unaware of things that other artists might crow about. He's not as... brusque as he can sometimes be (slightly) in other interviews, and it seems more like a decent conversation in some respects than a traditional interview. The mag is pricey enough here - €10 - but I wonder if your local library might have it on its shelves?

I bought a copy ( if a little pricey ) and it is an interesting ranking and interview with Benny. I am obsessed with Top 40 song rankings especially when it comes to ABBA.

Violet, did you get your copy from a local newsagent or download the app? I'm having difficulty locating this magazine.

If someone could post the full top 41 , that would be fantastic and great reading....and cause some debate on here...
From what’s been posted above, I like the fact there are a few album tracks high up there, like one of my favourites KOF for instance. I guess like most of us or probably all of us it’s a snap shot of that moment in time, and like most of us varies from day to day, week to week etc, apart from those that are cemented in stone, personally and no big surprise really to see DQ at joint number one, it’s the same for myself, . Interesting in Benny's respect that in his opinion he never bettered it after 40 plus years....
Very interesting to see YOMO so high, again personally I’ve never had anything against the track, a throw back and a bit of fun, but I’m very surprised it makes his top 41...

40. Honey, Honey (from Waterloo, Epic EPC 80179, LP, yellow labels, UK) £15 While ABBA struggled to find a hit successor to Waterloo, British studio band Sweet Dreams, fronted by Pickettywitch's Polly Browne, were quick to seize on the potential of the album track Honey Honey, scoring a Top 10 hit with it in the summer of 1974. Though bereft of the sonic signifiers that render later ABBA hits instantly recognisable, it's long been established it as a fan favourite. Indeed, emerging from a Swedish music scene where critical reverence was reserved for socially conscious groups who set store by their desire to tackle major themes, ABBA's explicit desire to write songs in the "bubblegum" tradition was almost subversive. Honey Honey singlehandedly vindicates ABBA's militant fidelity to the pure pop ideal.

It should be noted that this top 40 is according to one person so doesn’t really have much weight. Any of us could do one and it would be no more important than his.
Pete Paphides has been involved in the ongoing Olivia Newton-John reissue program by Primary Wave. He wrote the notes for the recent deluxe edition of her Greatest Hits album from 1977. In that release, it states that he is “a well-respected British music journalist and broadcaster, as well as the founder of Needle Mythology, a label specialising in reissues of albums that had not previously been available on vinyl.”

ABBA do get a mention in that Olivia Newton-John Greatest Hits [1977] reissue I mentioned:
“As with ABBA, with whom Olivia would duly strike up a lasting friendship, her ability to amplify the emotional reach of any song she chose to sing, along with the undeniable sonic craftsmanship of the team around her, compelled critics to take her more seriously with many her middle-of-the-road contemporaries.”

Pete Paphides' 'Needle Mythology' releases (primarily reissues of 1980's acts) have been done with care and are highly recommended. The Olivia Newton-John reissue program, whilst imperfect, has also been most welcomed. These undertakings are fraught with difficulties and of course, you can never please all the people. I'm just glad to have anything at this stage.

Thanks, Phil ( evilincarnate ) I'm glad someone appreciates my input. I only posted out of courtesy for Graham who was interested as to which ABBA songs were included. Pete Paphides is an ardent ABBA fan and his Top 40 ranking included a few surprising twists and turns. Makes a change from bragging about how many versions of " Voyage " one has. I knew some on this forum will immediately pour scorn on my comments.

I got the Mag, and I love the outlay of it so far. So now I have a weekend of reading and getting in the mindset of Benny. I do love the photos that are used. I paid £7.20.

No one was bragging or doing anything of the sort, thank you very much. It’s all a personal choice. That’s like saying anyone who’s seen the show more than once (which I haven’t) is bragging. Of course they aren’t! All I was pointing out was that it’s only one person’s opinion. He may well be respected but that doesn’t mean his list is any more or less important than anyone else’s. Interesting read all the same though.

Hi @violet, you mention your interest in Top 40 type posts. A good few of us compiled our own charts a while back. Some even went the whole hog and ranked the entire back catalogue. Actually, it's been done a few times - here's one such example abbachat.boards.net/thread/1436/abba-megarate-tracks-albumIt could be fun to do it again, now that we've all had some time to live with Voyage.

Hi Tony, I remember I compiled an ABBA Top 40 ranking last summer as Eddie. Also, I can recall several of us put together an ABBA Top 40 favourite song ranking including Graham, Johnny, Gary, Chronington etc. I have re-joined the forum as Violet. This is the translation of my surname from Polish into English.
