I am sure Just a Notion was mentioned in one of the official Abba magazines from 1978. I think there was one mentioned called No Man's land in one of the magazines too. I’d be interested to know if you find these. I’ve got most editions of the ABBA Magazine, though some earlier ones are either missing or incomplete. Just A Notion was apparently recorded in September 1978, so any issues from then on might mention it.

Hi Alan, I will dig out my old magazines. I have the complete set of magazines from one all the way through to the final one. I will work my way through them especially the ones in 1978. I will check old fan club newsletters too. Might have read it there. Will let you know my findings.

The big songs from Voyage (album)
I Still Have Faith in You. This is very skillfully constructed. The verses with Frida's deep tones and reflective and the chorus comes Agnetha with her more affirmative response in higher vocal range.
The chorus is preceded by an intrumental mimicking the words I Still Have Faith in You. A drum roll for the first and guitars just precrding second chorus
Don't Shut Me Down is a more "welded together" type of song. And that's not a criticism. Think of The Beatles' A Day in A Life or Fleetwood Mac's The Chain.
DSMD, to me is a musical v pop fusion. A kind of mix of I Wonder at the beginning, turning eventually to a type of Take a Chance On Me with that mega catchy and Classic Abba chorus which you can listen to on repeat.
Just a Notion. I didn't like this at first. But it has grown on me. Yes, the begining does sound like The Wombles, and yes an outtake from 1978. But I like the retro upbeat feel. When I say retro, it sounds earlier than even ABBA's original period. If you are not of a certain age and from UK, possibly Ireland, the Womble bit will mean nothing. And if not a geeky fan but more casual, the fact JAN is a re-working won't matter.
If there ever is a double CD in the future spanning 50 years of music, I think it will be these three and only these three on such an album.

I guess we should have been able to predict that Universal would want to make more of the 30th anniversary of Gold than the 1st anniversary of Voyage and I think the window for the announcement of a Deluxe edition of Voyage before Christmas is now passing. I'm not sure how successful the celebration of Gold has been - I received a pretty desperate e-mail yesterday telling me to grab my copy and I note that the horrid anniversary-edition CD from Amazon UK that is limited to 1992 copies is still available. Back to Voyage, if they don't do a Deluxe edition for this Christmas, I'm not sure when there will be an opportune time - perhaps 2024? In the meantime, I'm wondering what has happened to The Visitors 40th anniversary release, which would have been a far more interesting release than Gold. Is it still possible that this will appear before the end of the year, as 2023 will certainly be way past the anniversary.

After the battle is fought, it is always easy to claim how things still could have worked better.
We should not forget that many fans longed at least for both songs for years!!
I thank Polydor/Universal for the wise decision to release both songs at once, knowing a whole new album is on it's way.

Indeed. We may forget now, but the announcement of the two new songs was made on 27 April 2018. It was over three years and four months until we finally heard them. If we’d heard just one in September 2021, many would have been asking for the other. I think they wanted maximum impact for the two songs. Releasing DSMD a bit later may have been detrimental to its chart success. ABBA’s return was big news but it was only going to happen once. Putting both songs on one vinyl single would have split sales in half. This may have benefitted DSMD very slightly but would have affected ISHFIY negatively. It’s possible that the vinyl production delays meant that a separate DSMD 7” wasn’t possible at that time. A video would have been nice but it seems that record companies don’t want to spend money on them these days and decided that one was enough. I don’t really have any complaints. By getting two songs at once it was like the old days of getting an A and B side (or in this case a double A-side).

Yeah for sure if you released DSMD after ISHFIY - and when Voyage was announced it wouldn't have helped sales of it.
But it was always possible to release one or both singles before we knew there was as album.
#JustSaying.

I’ve lost all hope for a Voyage deluxe now. I think they are happy just focussing on the residency and extending it and taking it to other markets too. I don’t expect we will hear any more ABBA material (old or new).

Well, never say never, but yes, my thinking is that it won’t happen (unless it’s announced). It’s a shame. I’d have been absolutely fine with it if they’d said they recorded those ten songs and nothing else (even if it was a lie), but they’ve said there are two others that are quite good. I don’t suppose we’ll get a Just Like That-style leaking of either song (and if we did it would undoubtedly have some fans proclaiming it to be the best thing ABBA has ever recorded), so we might have to accept that we will never hear them. Well, CMP will probably get to hear them and write a whole book about it…

I don't suppose there was any ulterior motive in Benny mentioning the two unreleased songs and saying that they are "quite good" - just naive matter-of-factness, without his thinking about the likely reaction. Mind you, if these songs have choruses as wonderful as some of us regard JLT's as being, it would be a pity if we never got to hear them.

It will be interesting to see what happens in 2023 in terms of ABBA releases. The only anniversary to celebrate will be the 50th anniversary of the Ring Ring album, but will they bother? It would actually be strange for them to rewind to this album having not marked the 40th anniversary of The Visitors. Of course, something will happen in 2024 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Waterloo but I would be surprised if there were no ABBA releases in 2023. They will want to keep up the profile of ABBA to maintain the momentum of the Voyage shows. I suppose a Deluxe edition of the Voyage album to mark a year of the shows might not be out of the question, although there is no real alignment between the two projects apart from their common title and two songs (plus one motivated the other).

I've had another thought... they could mark the 30th anniversary of More Gold in 2023. I tend to overlook Gold and More Gold, as I see them as add-ons and not part of ABBA's core career - in fact, I can't believe they are 30 years old (it must mean that I'm getting old). Given the relative failure of More Gold in comparison to Gold, could they give More Gold one final big push in 2023?

Gamleman - it would be nice if one more push was given to More Gold.
The tracklist would have to be changed to reflect Voyage. Add I Still Have Faith in You and Don't Shut Me Down and discard The Way Old Friends Do and Lovelight for example. I always thought "Gold 2" would have been a better title than More Gold.
Or maybe another double CD in 2024 which includes those Voyage songs.

Yes, I think so! I started a thread on the subject abbachat.com/thread/1491/fantasy-more-gold-re-vampI think my choice of My Mama Said is unrealistic and possibly even People Need Love. Oh and Angeleyes instead of one of the VV tracks I suggested. But for sure songs from Voyage, the Mamma Mia films and hits not from Gold. When I say songs from Mamna Mia I of course mean the Abba originals!

Gold 2 is a good idea. That title should be commercial. With some promotion, it could sell well.

More Gold songs weren't that familiar to the casual ABBA fan that bought Gold and went to see Mamma Mia.
Those films although somewhat 💩 at least introduced new ABBA songs. On hearing ISHFIY and DSMD in the Voyage show fans may not want to buy or stream the Voyage album - an album of er, album tracks and unfamiliar songs. But may with "Gold 2".
Many of these songs now are quite well known.

More ABBA Gold is so hard to track down on Vinyl plus its the only way to get 'I Am The City' on Vinyl so a re-release of More ABBA Gold on Vinyl would be fantastic its one of two ABBA albums I don't have on Vinyl the other being 'Voyage'. I am planning to buy the Half Speed Master of The Visitors when it finally gets released.

I always found the "The Singles" concept the most convincing one. To go with all major official Releases in a time chronik order demonstrated the progress and evolution of the songs. Also, it doesn't judge each Song so much by its commercial success, which is a bit questionable anyway. ABBA Gold concentrated mostly on the UK but also US Charts. Why? ABBA has one of the most loyal fangroups in Continental Europe Countries with Germany being a bigger market than the UK actually. In Germany, Belgium and Holland, for instance, I Do I Do I Do, Honey Honey and So Long were really big Hits ( Australia, South Africa and Eastern Europe had the same situation)! Also in many of those Countries,The Day Before You Came was still a top 5 Hit! In fact, in Germany, Honey Honey is still one of ABBA's Top 5 Hits to this day! Therefore the Gold/More Gold Concept with "first rate/second rate" ABBA Hits is a missleading concept to me. Of course ABBA Gold was the right Strategie to have all most well known Songs on 1 CD, fone with me, but the More Gold doesn't work for me.
I could imagine a "Greatest Hits Vol.3" starting where GH Vol. 2 ended and ending in 2021 (or 2022 with the 2 remaining songs being released as fare well single)
And then comprising all 3 Greatest Hits Albums in lavishly new produced Vinyl / CD Boxes...
I would buy it...

^ABBA sold more in the UK than Germany, actually. Fact. They sold more singles in the UK. It is true ABBA's chart performance was better in Germany immediately after Waterloo and in 1982 with TDBYC. But better chart placings in UK at other times. Overall singles sales were higher in the UK. Fernando sold more than half a million in both countries. ABBA went on to a further 9 singles selling over half a million in the UK and no more in Germany. Gold has sold more than twice in UK than Germany - over 6m vs under 3m Studio album sales about the same for both. I take your point that Gold is a bit UK centric. I used to think it should have been more global and included Honey Honey and I Dox5. But now think the tracklist was the right one. It isn't very pro US tracklist. No Honey Honey, I Do or When All is Said and Done. The bosses at their Polar Music and then record company Polydor (UK), now part of Universal thought up the idea along with the tracklist for Gold abbasite.com/articles/abba-gold-at-30/The Singles is a bit UK centric with So Long but no Honey Honey. I prefer compilations to be in chronological order. The Singles from SOS up to and including SNC are ABBA's best by far. After that, their single were a bit patchy. There wasn't quite the high standard or consistency. The best single in later ABBA years was imo LAYLOM - which is not on The Singles.I think both Eagle and When All is Said and Done should have got UK single releases. Anyway this is meant to be about Voyage not compilation albums. As for Greatest Hits 3 there is a thread on that abbachat.com/thread/1154/greatest-hits-vol-3

I'm sure that part of the motivation for releasing Gold in September 1992 was the success of Erasure's Abba-esque EP earlier in the Summer, but that article referenced by Johnny doesn't even mention Erasure. It makes the release of Gold at that time sound like the earliest convenient moment, when all contracts with other record companies around the world had been concluded. Would we have got Gold without the boost from Erasure? I don't know, but I think their success may explain the UK-centric nature of Gold. At the time, there were still plenty of low-priced ABBA CDs around, such as the Hits collections on Pickwick, and I was skeptical that Polygram could follow these with a successful full-priced album.
I think the creation of a Greatest Hits Vol. 3 album to be included in a special box-set with the first two volumes is a nice idea. However, I doubt that they would release a Vol. 3 as a standalone album. I think Universal have overlooked how key the Greatest Hits (Vol. 1) album was and I would like to see them celebrate this album, perhaps in 2026 for its 50th anniversary, but with the bench cover. Previously they have re-issued it on CD with that horrid cartoon cover of the original Swedish edition and I don't think they appreciate how iconic and loved the bench cover is.
I also like the idea of a chronological compilation, like The Singles, and would like any new future compilation of ABBA material (perhaps in 2024) to follow this format.

I'm sure that part of the motivation for releasing Gold in September 1992 was the success of Erasure's Abba-esque EP earlier in the Summer, but that article referenced by Johnny doesn't even mention Erasure. ABBA-Esque was released on 1 June 1992 and ABBA Gold on 21 September. That really wouldn’t be anywhere near long enough to do all the work required for a worldwide release of a major compilation. I’d actually say it’s the other way round. The team behind ABBA Gold probably wanted a current act to cover some ABBA songs so that the stage was set for Gold. Deals were likely done behind closed doors. Erasure had previous on ABBA, and they were still a top selling band, so what better choice? There may even have been a provision in the agreement that the songs must be from the intended Gold tracklisting (likely already decided before Erasure even entered the frame). Of course, this would all look quite calculating, hence why no one has admitted it, but we know record companies will go to all sorts of lengths to sell units. It makes perfect marketing sense. If it really was just a lucky coincidence then why did Erasure do it at that time, three months ahead of an ABBA re-launch? Nah, they wanted people to think Erasure helped inspire it as it’s a good story. A happy coincidence that turned out very well for all concerned. Nice little fairytale but not real.

This alternative story is still speculation though, Alan. I am doubting that Polygram were behind Erasure's Abba-esque EP as I recall Erasure saying that they were originally planning a whole album of ABBA covers. Their EP entered the chart at No 1 at the beginning of June and I think 3+ months is ample time for Polygram to have pulled together a compilation of existing material with relatively basic (and unimaginative) artwork and pressed it. Was Gold released on 21st September worldwide or just in the UK and maybe Europe - I actually don't know.
EDIT: I will add another probable benefit of Erasure's Abba-esque EP - I doubt that Gold would have reached No 1 in the UK (or even been a major chart success) on its initial release without being preceded by the EP.

I was about 14 in 1992 and remember the release of ABBA-esque very well. There is no way that Gold would have sold so well initially without Erasure, they really made ABBA cool again.
I am sure there were already plans for a compilation in the works, but I suspect those plans were probably accelerated. I also think that the choice to include Lay All Your Love on Me and Voulez-vous over, say, Angeleyes was influenced by the Erasure track listing.
We’ll never know for sure but at the time it felt like ABBA Gold was a cash in on the Erasure success.
Erasure never had the same success again. Funny how ABBA became cool partly because of Erasure, and consequently Erasure became really uncool, partly because of ABBA.
Just as an aside, I think ABBA-esque is really the only successful set of Abba cover versions anyone has done. Erasure really managed to get under the skin of the songs and make them relevant.

There was a successful cover of an ABBA song in the UK in 1974 - Honey Honey by Sweet Dreams, which reached No 10, greatly out-performing ABBA's own release of "Ring Ring" at the time. I suppose Cher's ABBA covers album was a considerable success, but this was released during the ABBA euphoria in the aftermath of the Mamma Mia 2 movie, so doesn't really count It will be interesting to see whether anyone covers a song from Voyage. I wonder if B&B will offer the two incomplete songs to other artists - if they did, would it be publicised and would we be aware?

Re: Erasure
Universal were very likely considering a compilation before the release of Erasure's ABBAeaque EP. So I agree with Alan on that point. But not on his conspiracy theory about a deal with Erasure.
But Gamleman is also right about the 3 month gap between Abbaesque and Gold. There was plenty of time to slot LAYLOM on GOLD given its success as lead song from the Erasure EP.
I wonder if SNC had been considered but the success of LAYLOM for Erasure made then switch? 🤔 Or maybe SNC wasn't considered at all as ABBA didn't seem to like it.
LAYLOM was given a high placing in the running order, perhaps reflecting its new found popularity.
The tracklist order for GOLD seems to be based on popularity (from a British perspective) with Waterloo and TYFTM as encores at the end. Note I am saying 'popularity' not 'success' so that is why The Name of The Game is near the end and Fernando mid-way. I guess if a future edition of Gold changed the running order GGG would be second and KMKY not in the first ten songs.
Scaramouche - yes, Erassure never really had the same success again!
Gambleman - that Sweet Dreams duo consisted of a white woman and black man. The woman would black up - as it was deemed by some unacceptable to have mixed raced couples. Different times. Totally out ot order now.

I remember 1992 very very well too! Polydor when they bought the songs in 1990 had all sorts of ideas with the ABBA songs, and wanting to release rare and unreleased songs in box sets and a catalogue revamp with the albums being reissued with outtakes etc, until they had discussions with B&B, and realised it was a ‘no.’ Then it was going to be a remix album, and Benny & Michael were remixing DQ, when Benny put a stop to it and said the songs are good enough as they were. The erasure release was going to be an LP and changed sometime in early 92. With the huge success of that (Bananarama we’re also going to release a cover and decided against it when Erasure did, but released the abba sounding ‘Moving On’ instead. Kylie too was lined up for DQ, but Pete Waterman signed the dance group Abbacadabra and was due to release DQ in August 92, someone at PWL told Polydor and they rush released ABBA’s version as the plan was not until nearer Christmas. Pete Waterman was less than happy and spoke to industry newspaper: Music Week regarding it, under the headline ‘A8BA takes on ABBA.’ There was an article that Polydor conducted customer polls regarding An abba compilation on what colour they associated with the group (blue and gold.) and the fact that a photograph on the cover of an album ‘dates the group in a bad way’

^ABBA sold more in the UK than Germany, actually. Fact. This is not a fact, it is just bad tracking of sales in Germany. Micke Bayart has tracked this down more precisly in his new book. The issue is the counting of certifications of the singles. Yes, Gold sold less in Germany than UK, about 2.5 Million, but with singles, Fernando sold 600.000, Honey Honey sold 500.000 butfurther 10 singles sold between 200.000 and 350.000 and 5 singles around 50.000 to 150.000. The Studio Albums sold 4.5 Millions and about a dozend compilations sold 250.000 each, summing up to 18.5 Million sales in Germany :-)
