I hope people don't mind me starting this thread. It is basically a light piece of fluff, nothing heavy at all.
I wanted to ask people whether they have been in situations where Abba songs come across in noisy situations and stand out clear as a bell especially where or when you were not expecting to hear them.
It has happened to me a few times .. in shopping malls or even twirling the radio dial across many radio stations. When it happens I always notice the Abba sound .. basically the ladies singing in harmony (often, but not always, the chorus) before I notice the song itself. It is a fantastic feeling to hear Abba unexpectedly. The sound goes right into my brain (I am 58 and listening to them since I was 11) so there is no thinking, no processing ... just right in !
The latest was on Japanese TV a few weeks back. There is a program introducing different neighborhoods in Tokyo and the surrounding areas and it features restaurants or other interesting shops. The producers often use 10 to 20 second snippets of foreign songs of all varieties and genres. I heard Abba .. and then 2 seconds later recognized 'When I Kissed The Teacher'. The next 15 seconds were bliss and 200% pure joy.
Any similar experiences to share?
Martin
Alan, if you notice a better place to move this thread to, please do so. It is my first time to open a thread/topic.

I know exactly the sound you mean. It really does cut through all other noises, so that you know it's ABBA - just not yet what song. It's that particular energetic blend of the two voices. It really is unique.

I’m sure it has happened to me, but can’t recall any major instances. Though ABBA do haunt me quite a bit, supermarket, public spaces, car radios. Wherever I go they seem to play on the sound system. My Dad was especially affected by this, he couldn’t get away from them in house as I was playing them constantly, or he’d tell me that they were following him about when he was out on errands.

ABBA definitely have their own distinctive sound that really stands out if you're a fan (and even if someone isn't, probably). And for me it has been the combination Agnetha and Frida's singing above everything else about them that makes ABBA special for me.
(Fans of other artists no doubt have equal sensitivity to their favourites, whenever and in whatever situation they happen to hear them.)

Whilst shopping I often have headphones on to drown out the noise from the peasants around me but on the rare occasion I don't I often find I notice the sound of ABBA emanating from somewhere and my ears prick up instinctively. I've even been known to retrace my steps to discover where exactly the sound is coming from. Sometimes, I will be ever so slightly aware of the sound of Agnetha and Frida's combined vocals and it's like Pavlov's Dogs or summat; my senses immediately heighten and I have to find out which song it is. It can be hard to discern which song it is above the din of the crowd. I'll even linger in a shop if ABBA are playing or, if I'm feeling brave, start a sing-song. True story: a few weeks ago I was in a charity shop and ABBA came on the radio and I must have been humming along and a lady turned to me and smiled and said something along the lines of, "ABBA always cheer me up". Well, that was enough for me; off I went on a monologue about how much I love them (how embarrassing but what the hell) and the manager heard and came over all excited and it transpired she was a SUPERFAN who had been to VOYAGE and all sorts of AꓭBA events. Even showed me photos and videos of her dressed up as Agnetha, dancing away. She's even been on holiday to the place where Mamma Mia! was filmed. Hardcore.
