The 1992 album that keeps on giving. This week (starting 2nd June 2023) it reached 2 milestones in the UK in relation to chart run and sales
🔥1,100 weeks on ALBUM Chart 🔥 Longest running chart album in the UK and indeed the World 🔥 Platinum x 21 ie 6.3m sales. (The vast majority are real sales eg reported back in 2021 at 5.7m "pure sales". Streaming mainly in recent years) 🔥 Second best seller of ALL Time in the UK (behind Queen Greatest Hits)
🔥 USA certified SIX MILLION sales way back in 2002. More likely 10 plus million now.
🔥 Sales in excess of 2.5m in Germany and over 1 million in each of France, Canada,Australia.

I used to think the tracklisting was UK centric and unfair (I am British).
Well, it is UK Centric - but actually, the record executives got it right (Well mainly, I would gave gone for SNC over VV).
Thank You For the Music wasn't a big hit but kind of signature song so had to be included.
Strictly, in terms of global sales you would have I Do x5 and not LAYLOM. But come on, there's no contest is there?
Maybe even Honey Honey or Summer Night City instead of Voulez Vous. In that case SNC was robbed. But ABBA didn't like it.
SNC or LAYLOM. I love both but LAYLOM comes out on top.
Assuming TYFTM had to be included, and Dies Your Mother Know and I Have a Drean which "disco" song? Choose 2 out of SNC, VV, LSYLOM, I would go for SNC and LAYLOM and leave out Voulez Vous.
So, GOLD tracklist almost perfect.

Tough choice between SNC and LAYLOM... love both.... ironic both follow each other in Voyage show.. so Has SNC come into B&Bs favour....?
Personally I always thought SNC should've been on Gold if being honest in place of.. TYFTM, the arguements win.. alas.. From what I remember not enough room to include SNC...for it to be on Gold

In the midweek U.K. Album charts Gold dips to 22, if it doesn't improve it will be the first time this year it hasn't been in the top 20....

Yep, SNC certainly better than TYFTM.
But I guess Head vs Heart thing with Thankyou for the Music being the better known song.
The Australian version of GOLD which they had until 2008 included Ring Ring (fair enough) but also I Do x5 and Rock Me.
Rock Me, ffs! That's not one of ABBA's top 19 Greatest Hit songs, more like bottom 10 Worst Songs!,lol!
SNC was clearly out of favour being left of Voulez Vous, Gold and both Mamma Mia films.
That said ther Wembley performance in 1979 was really good..and they seemed to enjoy it. Perhaps, it wasn't the song per se but the final recording, a distinction Benny would make. And it took them all a long time to like the song and final single recording.

I think at the time of release, Polydor used the erasure ep as a barometer for success, including LAYLOM and VV instead of other tracks. I remember Colin writing about this at the time.

I think that too especially with LAYLOM. That's why its in and other bigger International hits ( I Do, Honey Honey, SNC) are out.
The timing was very fortunate.

Does anyone know ?
In the U.K. Gold sells on average 4-5 k each week and hovers in the top 20. In the US, it hovers. Around the 100 mark ( this week 104 ) but how many does it sell? I've read it's total sales are close or over 10 million , but as not updated for years, officially it's ironically the same as the UK , 6 million...

I am not sure of Gold's weekly/annual sales in US but total sales about 11 million.
Breakdown 3,000 000 Music Club, unconventional outlets. Not used for Billboard Charts
6,000,000 plus Scanned by Soundscan for Billboard charts
NB Sounscan started in 1991. In early/mid 90s they did not capture the whole market especially Music Club and Mail Order sales.
1,800,00 Streaming ewuivalent sales.
During ABBA's career in 70s only Greatest Hits and The Album went platinum ie 1 million sales.

In the latest stats to come out.... Gold has sold approximately 115,800 up to end of June, making it the 13th best seller of the year so far in the U.K. It's actually only 3,000 copies behind 10th place and that's less than its average weekly sales of around 4,000, which it constantly sells, and more each week. So way on target compared to last year to finish in that top 10.
With 25 weeks left of 2023, with an average of 4K sold each week, we are looking at another 100k taking Gold over 200k for the year, 2022 fell just short around 198k.
Of the 27 charts this year, Gold has been top 20 for 25 weeks and top 10 for 4, highest position 10.
Total now around 6.35 million in the UK
