I saw this intriguing image
in
I'm wondering if this track order was ever used. The pic suggests, at least to me, that it was the original intended track order.

Not so sure about that. It looks like someone’s been cutting up Post-It notes and having fun making up their own running order. And it’s a very odd one. Waterloo itself tucked away in the middle of Side 2? And no Hasta Mañana, which was recorded in December 1973 and was initially a Eurovision contender. Why would that be left off?

Why would anyone make master tapes with a different running order if there wasn't any intention of using them? If you consider the tapes were made in the early 70s, I'm not surprised by the use of hand-writing and paper.
Please watch the video. The photo is one of many from an official source. I have no reason to doubt that.
I think the track list does make sense, in that after they won Melodifestivalen, and especially after the international win, there was a clear need to start with the winning track.
I think "Dance" would have been the perfect opener, with that acapella singing in the beginning. Also, the 'rock' tracks on B-side flow quite nicely that way, continuing with "Waterloo" with more pop sounds.

They are the original 16-track master recordings so the order is just the timeline when they were originally recorded i.e Dance (While The Music Still Goes On) was the first song recorded in September 1973. Honey, Honey was the last song recorded during the sessions in December 1973 so probably just on another master tape.

That makes the most sense, matt. That said, it feels like a better running order to the released version - the means the album is bookended with really lovely songs. Just a matter of where you might squeeze in Hasta Manana, really. The Barry Levine photos are terrific. I much prefer them to the Anders Hanser images: Levine had an eye for glamour; Hanser's aesthetic was far more candid and documentary... and not always entirely flattering. But would a Levine photo book be extensive? I think his work spans just a year or maybe two?? Some of his unused shots might beautify an anthology or documentary. Bobby's Brother has developed quite a following now, and some seem too ready to mistake his enthusiastic speculation for insider knowledge. But if he gets traction and the right people are watching, who knows what ideas might be given attention...?

Honey, Honey was the last song recorded during the sessions in December 1973 so probably just on another master tape. Honey Honey is on that tape, do you mean Hasta Mañana? Well spotted though, about the recording order. I consulted the Waterloo album entry on Wikipedia, and sure enough, that’s the order they were recorded in. Was Bobby’s Brother really suggesting it would be the actual running order? I didn’t watch the video. As HOMETIME said, he is not an “official source”.

Thanks for clearing this up, although I do like the track order there.
Also, omitting Hasta Manana seems logical in that it's the track they rejected in favour of Waterloo for Eurovision.
Bobby's Borther didn't say anything about this photo, only the comment that all those recent photos have been published by "ABBA's official networks".

That image was just one of a few he mentioned as having been released on ABBA's social media. I don't think he did more than hopefully speculate that the number of Barry Levine images could possibly be seen as grounds for a new photobook.

If ever there was an album where whoever decided the track sequencing has got a lot of explaining to do, 'Waterloo' is it. It manages to unleash three of my bottom five ABBA tracks back to back to back, straight after the title track. Totally kills the album, for me. (SITPT has got 'hide it away in the middle of side two and hope no-one notices it' written all over it. I'd probably stick KKS last on side one as a throwaway novelty song tacked on the end, but it'd need to be preceded by a couple of the album's better tracks. HM I'd simply consign to one of the inner circles of Dante's Inferno.) There are two or three other clunkers flying around too, but that gruesome threesome really does my head in.

Sitting in the Palm Tree and King Kong Song are horrors. I don't mind Hasta Manana so much.
For me the stand out track is My Mama Said with its baseline, jazzy funk feel combined with lyrics.about a family feud.
I am not really a fan of Waterloo, the song. And like quite a few ABBA fans prefer the other Eurovision song - Ring Ring. I never really got the lyrics.
This might have been mentioned a few times 😀. Thinking about it Waterloo is probably my least favourote ABBA album - worse than Ring Ring.

Bottom of the ABBA album pile for me too. And yes, 'My Mama Said' is a hidden gem.

The running order really is bonkers. It's an odd set of songs overall. There are some "sets" that make me wonder if they liked one song and thought "ooh! let's do another in that vein".
Things that feel like sets to me:
Honey Honey / What About Livingstone - pure pop Dance (WTMSGO)/Suzy Hang Around - 60s feel My Mama Said / Gonna Sing You My Lovesong - jazz/soul influence (the coolest songs on the album IMO) Waterloo/Watch Out - glam Sitting In The Palm Tree/King Kong Song - too many Skittles and too much Fanta consumed in the studio Hasta Manana - Schlager outlier that could fit comfortably with the first two sets.
The songs are really too diverse to make a cohesive album. The more I see it, the more I think that photo in the opening post suggests the best and most ABBAesque running order.

I love the way that no two people ever hear the same album in quite the same way. I hope that never changes! So much depends on personal associations and memories. And when people ask me, 'what's your favourite album by [whoever]', I always have to ask them whether they do mean 'favourite', as opposed to 'best' (in my personal opinion), or 'the one I listen to the most'. There are usually different answers to each of these questions. Where ABBA are concerned, I would say:
My Favourite Album: The Visitors (very clear-cut) ABBA's Best Album (in my opinion): Tricky one - probably The Visitors, but arguably The Album or even Super Trouper. The One I Listen to the Most: ABBA. (By some distance.)

There's so much to weigh up in deciding which of the other albums are close to the same level of quality. The one I listen to most is The Visitors - with Voulez-Vous very, very close behind. Voyage still gets more spins these days than the other six.

It seems I'm in a minority here but I like Waterloo (the album) a lot. Far from perfect, but a lot of fun. The only song I've never liked much is Watch Out but it probably has to do with Björn trying (and failing) to sound like a rock singer. But the overall feel and energy of the album makes it a very fun listen. Don't kill me now, but there are times when I prefer it to the sterile perfection of Super Trouper...

I guess this favourite/best/most listened to album topic deserves a thread of its own, so I'll do mine in a separare post:
Favourite: The Album Best: The Album Most played: Voyage (before its release it might have been Arrival, I think, but it changes with time).
