Again, I can't believe this one doesn't have its own thread. A top ten ABBA track for me. Always surprised it rarely gets mentioned in dispatches. To my ears, it's an absolute masterclass in writing, arranging, performance and production, chock-full of lovely little touches. Perfectly placed at the end of Side 1, putting a spring in your step as you flip to Side 2 - which is just what a side-closer should do. The very definition of 'unjustly underrated' and another slice of slightly chilly brilliance from the ST album. Personally, I absolutely love a fairly icy synth and a treated vocal. Not to mention the accentuation of offbeats and the guitar clucking along in the background. Synthpop with a soul.

Agreed on every count.
Listening to it now. The swell of that chorus and the lovely key change are sublime. Those harmonies. That feelgood tune against the not-really-angsty angst of the lyrics. The timpani hits and the synth swirl on the outro. It's a perfect blend of 1980s modernism and classic ABBA. And it works great as a live track, too.
I think it might get a little lost in the crowd because so many tracks on Super Trouper could have been viable singles. I reckon it'd have been an A-side from virtually any other album. I'd be inclined to edit a few instrumental bars here and there (especially in the intro) for 7". I can imagine a none-more-early-80s video shot on a set of tiled walls, zooms though venetian blinds, and over-exposed white.
A glorious bit of pop, overall.

I seem to recall the intro of Me and I being used for opening titles music of BBC golf coverage in the 1980s. Anyone else remember that?

It's interesting these under rated tracks... Another that's passed by so often , ( along with The Piper, which I adore) ... I remember using the track as part of my counselling course.. it fit perfectly..( of course)... Personally not a single, alas a lost album track to the vast majority of general public....

The Wikipedia entry mentions it was used for bowls. It sounded just right. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_and_IYes, an underrated track. When the album first came out, it was one of my favourites and I thought it would be a single.

The Wikipedia entry mentions it was used for bowls. It sounded just right. Ah, yes, bowls. That was it. BBC Sport were quite fond of doing things like this. It was decades before I discovered that their Formula One music was actually the outro of Fleetwood Mac’s The Chain, or that their skiing incidental music was really an instrumental version of the Human League’s The Things That Dreams Are Made Of.
