The ABBA catalogue undoubtedly offers no shortage of choice when it comes to sublime intros. So which one's your pick of the crop?

I think I will have to pick GGG but it could be any one of the ones posted and others too.

I have a few - GGG, HOH, SNC (both versions).

Following on from my post above, whilst not my favourite ever ABBA intros, there's no doubting the vast number of intro styles they used - from fade-in steam train on NPB to dreamy vocals on My Love, My Life, then the wailing of So Long to the classical strings of AGAN.

Since Waterloo's not on the shortlist, it would have to be the Triple-G for me, recently voted no 7 best ABBA song ever by the Internatinoal Fan Club mag readers.

Since Waterloo's not on the shortlist, it would have to be the Triple-G for me, recently voted no 7 best ABBA song ever by the Internatinoal Fan Club mag readers. If only there'd been a 'Not one of those' option. Oh, wait... "Triple-G": excellent! On this occasion I actually plumped for Eagle as I was in an aquiline mood and the whole 'false' intro thing - the way they give us a pre-intro intro before the actual intro - is total genius. This is a question with no wrong answer, of course. If I can be bothered, I'll have a think and try to work out how many genuinely 'great' intros ABBA gave us. Got to be 30-plus, hasn't it? bjorenny's mention of So Long is a good shout, though that particular song gets my vote for 'best outro', as it happens. HOH is another top-drawer intro.

If It Wasn’t For The Nights.
Starts off with a beautiful keyboard intro, with classic 70-disco strings, then comes an incredibly funky guitar riff before amazingly cool base and drum parts kick in.
You listen to that and you ask yourself: “Can music get any better?”
It is utterly joyous, and the listener is getting set for the happiest of songs.
…and in true ABBA style, they tell a story of sadness, break-up and heart-ache.
But damn, it’s a good song with a world-class intro,

What about the intro of "Knowing Me, Knowing You"? Surely it's a contender?

I also forgot about the acapella greatness of TACOM.

Hard to choose as they had so many good songs but I picked Gimme Gimme Gimme, Would have liked to pick Dancing Queen as well but didn't know you could only pick one. the live intro to Does your mother Know was a good intro too.

I voted for Hole In Your Soul. It works so well in the opening of ABBA The Movie. But ABBA had so many. I would add As Good As New too.

I hate to go for the obvious choice, but it has to be Gimme Gimme Gimme. Its intro may be the best thing they ever did. I’m less fond of the rest of the song.
As for other great intros, there are so many. One Of Us, SOS, Money Money Money, Super Trouper, If It Wasn’t For The Nights, Knowing Me Knowing You, As Good As New, Fernando, Dancing Queen… the list goes on. They sure knew how to grab you!

A few I'd like to add to the list:
Lovelight - that glorious guitar riff! The King Has Lost His Crown - that dreamy opening section, leading to the swelling vocal/strings combo. Delicious. Elaine - the niggling synth burble and - BAM! - that zesty riff. Suzy Hang Around - short but very sweet. I'm A Marionette - bass and strings drama.

Completely agree that the rest of GGG doesn't quite live up the intro. I'd say the same about SNC (only more so). But what about the most underrated and unjustly overlooked ABBA intro? Marionette's got to be prominent in that particular conversation, I reckon.

These are all great choices, particularly "Lovelight" and "Elaine" (spunky, arresting intros in both cases) and of course, the ominously dramatic opening of "I'm A Marionette" is peerless - how brilliant it is!!

So, so many songs I want to say because that was part of Abba’s brilliance, grabbing your attention right from the first note. I always liked the short blast of energy with Summer Night City though. I remember when it was released as a single and a friend of mine heard it for the first time on the radio she said it nearly blew her knickers off!!! (We were young …. )

(We were young …. ) Arguably the best first half-second of any song ever. A sonic shockwave clearly with apparel-compromising potential...
