I must say I'm always* surprised by the vanishingly small amount of chit-chat prompted by this jaw-dropper of a song. Is there a better ballad in the ABBA catalogue? Is there a better ballad in ANYONE's catalogue? Absolutely masterful in conception, performance and delivery, and a track that never fails to land a very, very sharp jab to the emotional solar plexus. For me, it's maybe ABBA's top eye-mister - and that was the case even before children came along. A real 10 out of 10 song, in my book, and number 7 in my All-time ABBA Top 10. File under 'U' for 'Underappreciated', and near the front too.
*Well, not always - I do have other things to do...

I was 11 when The Visitors album was released and tbh I didn't like STMF back then. It was the penultimate track and I was waiting for the uptempo 'banger' (or potential chart smash as it was more likely referred to at that time) and the album ended with this segueing into LAAPTMR, and I felt seriously underwhelmed. It is now my number 1 ABBA ballad, more so than TWTIA.

Is there a better ballad in ANYONE's catalogue? Is there a better ballad in the ABBA catalogue? Yep, just skip forward to the next track on 'The Visitors' album. That said, 'Slipping Through My Fingers' is superb and definitely on a par with their very best songs (ballads and otherwise). I actually didn't like it upon first listen when I was a kid, mainly because I didn't (initially) care for Agnetha's delivery, particularly the double-tracked vocal in the second verse when I thought that Frida was more than capable of providing the harmony. I now realise it was most likely a deliberate decision for Agnetha to affect a rather childlike tone in consideration of the subject matter and she needed to be front-of-centre given that it was most likely very personal to both her and Bjorn. My partner, who doesn't rate ABBA at all, has singled out this particular track as his favourite, citing the melody as being highly memorable. I'm sure he hasn't bothered listening to the lyric or been especially moved, but he likes the tune and production. However, I have focussed on the narrative many a time and it does cut straight through, eliciting the occasional tear from the hardest of hearts. A true beauty indeed.

It's a beautiful song. It's got some of the same ELO-style harmonies that they used on Happy New Year. I think the track could be even better if (a) there were real strings, (b) if the guitar solo was on Spanish acoustic, and (c) Agnetha didn't do the baby-voice thing. All minor quibbles. I think it could have made a decent single.

This beautiful song slides in at #25 in my Top 40 ABBA list.
A gut-wrenchingly wonderful ballad based on the struggles of parenthood and every day life.
As a parent to two kids, I feel the struggle.
