As part of their Box Sets based on individual Year's, 'Now!' are releasing the 1974 Year Book. It is 4 CD's with 82 Tracks in Total. Amazingly, they have not included 'Waterloo'. (Or 'Ring Ring', in fact). superdeluxeedition.com/news/now-yearbook-1974/ABBA are usually included on these Year Book 'Now' Compilations. We will see if ABBA are included in the 1974 Year Book 'Extra' in a few Months time.. Some are wondering if the omission of ABBA is something to do with what will/may happen later in 2024, for their 50th ESC Win. Gigliola Cinquetti is included with 'Go (Before You Break My Heart)', the English version of 'Si', which was 2nd for Italy, in the 1974 ESC. Also included it Mouth and MacNeal's 'I See A Star', which was 3rd in the 1974 ESC. One ABBA Song is included. It is Sweet Dream's 'Honey Honey', which is Track 6 on CD 4. (In my view, the only ABBA Cover that is a good as ABBA's Original). At least one of the People, who Compile these 'Now' Year Book's, is a Queen Fan, as Queen nearly always have Track 1 on CD 1, of each Release. In this case, it is 'Killer Queen'. (Track 1 if they had a UK Hit that Year, of course!). No Tracks by the Glitter Band, even though Gary Glitter is not on any of their Singles. They backed him, on his Singles. He is Banned from being on any UK Compilations, due to his Crimes. But, that should not mean that the Glitter Band can't be included. A great pity, as 1974 saw them reach No.4 with the excellent Glam Rock styled 'Angel Face'. Plus their great 1975 Singles: 'Goodbye My Love' and 'The Tears I Cried'.

That's odd, onlyabba4meagain, given how well they've been represented on the other yearbooks. I wonder if the anniversary plans made a difference in terms of what they'd allow? Yes, the Queen arrangement is a bit tedious. I'm not sure how reliable the information is, but I had heard that Queen imposed the condition that they have to be the opening track on any of these compilations.

A lot of People feel that 1974 was awful for Chart Music, but many think that it was great. I too think that it was great. We had Glam Rock, Hard Rock, Bubblegum Pop, MOR Pop. As well as Soul and Country. It was also the Year that saw Queen, (March), and ABBA, (April), first enter the UK Charts. 1974 was a terrific Year for UK Hit Singles...

It seems bizarre why " Waterloo " has been omitted. I am shocked and surprised. ABBA defined pop music and are so worthy of an inclusion. I have noticed the record companies are beginning to omit ABBA again on more recent " Now " compilations. Why is this ?

It could just be that Björn and Benny/ABBA have some right of veto over these things. Polar is owned fully by Universal but perhaps ABBA are given slightly more control of certain things than we might think.
The original Now compilations from the 1980s are being reissued - they’re now at Now 17 from 1990 - and just about every reissue so far has omitted one or two tracks. Phil Collins is one that’s been missed off a few and Now 16 missed out Kate Bush. Both of those artists owned the rights to their recordings. ABBA don’t, having all sold their shares in Polar prior to the PolyGram acquisition in 1989, but I would hope they’d still have some say.
Personally I’m quite glad that ABBA songs don’t appear on these compilations. In the age of streaming, and even the average person being able to listen to any song by any act on the likes of YouTube, I don’t really see the point of them anyway.

Today the Main 'Now Yearbook 1974 Set was Released. (82 Tracks over 4 CD's).
On Thursday 7th June the 'Now Yearbook 1974 Extra' Set is Released..
'1974 Extra' contains 3 CD's, with a total of 64 Tracks/Hits, from that Year.
1).. Once again Queen have Track 1. On the 4 CD Main 1974 Yearbook iI was 'Killer Queen'. This time it is 'Seven Seas Of Rhye', which was their 1st UK Hit, in March 1974, and it should have been much bigger than a No.10 Hit.
2).. Once again, there is nothing by ABBA in the Set. which means that 1974 has been represented by 2 Sets, with 7 Disks, and 146 Hits, but ABBA have been totally excluded.
3).. As ABBA are usually included in any Now Yearbooks that they qualify for, it is obvious that ABBA//universal have forbidden them to use ABBA this time. The Question is - Why??? Is it something to do with the 50th Anniversary of their ESC Win? Will something unexpected happen?
4).. In the meantime, the 1974 Yearbook 'Extra' includes 'Long Live Love', Olivia Newton-John's UK Eurovisian Entry, for that Year, which was 4th. The Italian, (2nd), and The Netherlands, (3rd), Entries, were on the Main 1974 Yearbook. Which - ironically - only leaves the Entry that came 1st being ignored - 'Waterloo' by ABBA. As if 'Now' are playing a Game, they follow Olivia's UK Entry, with a Swedish Artist - Sylvia Vrethammar, and her version of 'Y Viva Espanya'. (That 'only' made No.4 in the UK, but it was in the UK Chart for Months).

Given how often ABBA have appeared on the other yearbooks, I wonder if ABBA/Universal are behind their absence this time? It's very odd, though. I can't imagine that they'd dodge an opportunity to rake in some royalties.

Maybe the omission of 'Waterloo' is due to the fact that Polar are issuing/promoting their own 50th anniversary products right now and didn't want to detract from that?
