Unless in exceptional circumstances, then thanks and acknowledgements are not really necessary especially when dealing with old pictures. In other cases then appreciation should be accepted as a given. Sometimes, it's annoying when certain sites watermark photo's that weren't taken by them and were simply sourced by themselves. It goes without saying but thanks to the photographer who took this.
