The fact that SOS was sung live, and is a more challenging vocal than Waterloo because of the solo verses, tends to suggest that the 'backing tapes haven't arrived' excuse being mocked by the show was probably the truth. If they were up for performing SOS live then a Waterloo singalong would have been a piece of cake.

Definitely live vocals on 'SOS' which makes you wonder why they didn't do likewise with 'Waterloo'? They were obviously capable of it. Hard to believe, as the programme joked, about tapes not arriving. That apart, what did SNL expect? That the group fly the entire backing band/singers and sound equipment over for just two songs?

I thought the sketch with the insipid clown Klein was rather offensive in the first place and then to top it off, they had to flash a message on the screen that they were lip synching? Lip synching was done quite often on TV shows of the time. What a bunch of a-holes the SNL people must have been! No wonder ABBA didn't want to go back on there. |
