I love, love, love this album. With so many hits included, it could almost be repackaged as a compilation. There aren't any songs I dislike - even though I would have made "I Have A Dream" and "Chiquitita" the last songs on their respective sides of the record, just to prolong the clubby feel a bit longer.
"If It Wasn't For The Nights" is, and always has been, my favourite song here - the big hit that got away. I also adore "The King Has Lost His Crown." I'm one of the few who really loves "Lovers (Live A Little Longer)." With the bonus tracks, this album got even better. I loved how ABBA looked at this time as well: those slinky black outfits are my favourites. I think I might even rank this as my second favourite ABBA album.

Remember buying this on release day in April 1979 and taking the bus home eagerly awaiting to place it on the turntable. The artwork was very Scandinavian - those triangular mountains and sparkly graphics. As Good As New is a great opener, still sounds good today. Voulez-Vous sounded extremely well produced and catchy, top quality. I have a dream - a timeless song really and I love the way they build it up in three sections (first Frida, then Frida and Agnetha and finally both girls with the choir). Angel eyes is okay, I think the vocals are a bit squeaky to be honest, but a top melody. The King Has Lost His Crown - an underrated gem, love this track. DYMK - I actually preferred the version performed on the BBC special in Switzerland. IIWFTN - should have been a single, a missed opportunity - classic pop. Chiquitita - this hasn't aged well, not as well as Fernando anyway. But a good vocal from Agnetha and a rollicking musical ending. Lovers (LALL) - this sounds terrific even today - clean, strong production and Frida with the sultry overtones, brilliant. Kisses of Fire - good track but noisy in places, especially at the start where the low vocal meets the chorus. Love the 'losing you' part - great. At the time a lot of the reviews in the media slagged this album off, saying ABBA had jumped on the disco bandwagon - but hey, it's up there with the best if them and still holds up today, 35 years on.

But a good vocal from Agnetha and a rollicking musical ending. Kisses of Fire - good track but noisy in places, especially at the start where the low vocal meets the chorus. Love the 'losing you' part - great. DYMK: Like you, Martin, I used to prefer the Switzerland version with its honky-tonk feel. But I got an MP3 of it a few years ago and recreated the album with the earlier version: it completely breaks the flow of the album. So the more insistent drive of the released version is now my favourite. That said, the Switzerland version still holds its own and really should appear on some kind of anthology soon. Especially for the fans who have forked out for the 'official' version several times over. Chiquitita: It's a style of song that just wouldn't get a release today, I think. The musical structure is in the realms of classical music. Although Agnetha has the lead-vocal (and it is one of her most beautifully pure performances), the song ends up as a vocal two-hander. I don't know if you head the 'unmixed' tracks that were leaked last year (or thereabouts) but I was astonished to hear how much Frida is on the track. Plus, quite a few of her lines are not just harmonies, but counter melodies, stand-alone melodies in some cases. In fact, some of them could have worked as the basis for other songs. I appreciate this track far more, now that I have heard how much work really went into it. Kisses Of Fire was a big favourite of mine back then. I especially love the breathy second verse. As time has gone on, I think a decent song was let down by the production. Agnetha's intro is just a smidgen too quiet and the transition from the verses to the choruses is just a bit rushed. The piano sounds a bit tinny, whereas IMO it could have been used to boost the bass feel of the song. I love the long notes the girls hold at the end, with the guys doing some nice BVs behind. My mom actually bought this album one day after hearing 'Chiquitita' playing on the radio. She just loved that song. Well, it didn't take long for me to have it end up in my collection of ABBA albums. Great album. ) There is only one song that I skip and that is 'I Have a Dream', I think it is because of the children's choir, to me it changes the flow of the song.

The Voulez-Vous album is one of my three favorite ABBA albums, along with the Arrival album and The Album. I agree that If It Wasn't For The Nights should have been a single. I'm sure it would have been one of their bigger hits.

There are 7 ABBA songs that are over five minutes long, and three of them are on the Voulez-Vous album: Voulez-Vous, Chiquitita, and If It Wasn't For The Nights. The other four ABBA songs that are over five minutes long are Eagle, The Visitors, I Let The Music Speak, and The Day Before You Came.

A fun little documentary I found with lots of audio excerpts from radio, phone and tv interviews with Bjorn and Benny from 1978 and 1979. It puts you in frame of what was happening during that time when, creatively speaking, ABBA were grasping at straws and trying to come up with material for what was to become the Voulez Vous album.
