There is some very interesting information on the Wikipedia page of 'The Day Before You Came' that mentions other versions of the song that I would love to hear, those versions need to be released.
Below is the relevant information from Wikipedia
While reminiscing on the track at an interview for Mamma Mia! the musical, Björn said, "we thought it was a great song", but added that they also thought it would not work as it was so far removed from their previous material. Frida said that there were "problems over how Agnetha would interpret it". ABBA attempted many different ways of singing the song, eventually settling on a "haunted" style. In the version that got released, Agnetha sang as if she was hurt and vulnerable, rather than belting it out (which Bjorn implies she did in other takes). Frida said the song was "a very different sound to what we had done before", and Björn added that they were "taking a chance". Frida said it was a "beautiful song". In response to the interviewer commenting on their looking unhappy in the video clip, Frida said, "it was an unhappy time of our lives [as we were] on the verge of splitting up" and had started talking about the individual projects of each member. She adds that it was not an easy situation, arguably justifying the gloomy atmosphere as a parallel of their real lives as a part of ABBA.
What are your thoughts.

I have always said that 'The Day Before You Came' is a master piece. The way Agnetha interpreted the song and how she "acted" the song instead of just straight out singing the song. And I agree it would not have worked in MM! As far as the mood goes I could see it very easily that ABBA was going in different directions even when 'Super Trouper' came out. Just like watching the final scene in the video of 'Under Attack' as they were walking out of the warehouse with their backs to us as if to say "that is all folks"!

I never liked this song, at all. Dull, musically its barren, zero real dynamics, and much too long.
Just my opinion; a bunch of Abba fans think its a masterpiece.... I do not, I dont think I've ever had the patience to even finish listening to it.

To be honest even after all these years I'm still in a bit of a quandary over it. I certainly don't skip over it. I can see how it is a favourite of many and it is very well put together. But I probably find the song more intriguing than anything else. Like a number of ABBA's later songs there's a mini story therein but it's a story that has different interpretations. Some say it's about love changing someone's mundane life. It really could be that simple. But others have wondered about the lyrics and the way Agnetha sings them. Doesn't it sound a bit like a police statement? An alibi? Was she an assailant or a victim? After all she leaves her house at eight and arrives at her desk at a 'quarter after nine'. But then it takes three hours from leaving work to arriving home. Collecting the Chinese takeaway couldn't have taken nearly two hours. The haunting background vocals and general grimness / dim light of the film locations in the video sort of add to the feeling something bad had happened. This song also makes me wonder how the group could have evolved again, had they kept going or maybe re-formed after a break. They certainly had the talent to have re-invented themselves again if the will was there.

But really it is about a mundane life until a new love comes along and then she can't even remember what her mundane life was like before meeting this new love.

Yeah, But what happened in the missing two hours? I like these later songs as Bjorn's lyrics got better and they experimented with different sounds and singing styles to create a certain mood. They make the listener think and wonder.

The Day Before You Came either has the distinction of being ABBA's longest song, or shares that distinction with Eagle. Different sources give different times for some songs. The CSR box set says 5:50 for TDBYC and 5:49 for Eagle, but the TYFTM box set says 5:47 for both songs.

Vicky's stills present me with another opportunity to rave about this cool and haunting mashup: Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! vocals, overlaid on Duffy's Stepping Stone, set to The Day Before You Came visuals. 21st Century ABBA

Nice avatar Chelsea! Is that your car? I wish. No, but it's a dream I hope to fulfil in the not to distant future.
