I'm delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of an updated edition of my very first ABBA book, ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions. Originally published in 1994, this revised version will incorporate all the new information that has come to light since the book was first issued. It will also feature hitherto unpublished or long-forgotten facts and stories that I've unearthed during my ongoing research on ABBA and their music.

Even more exciting: Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson - and Polar Music International - have authorised me to listen to much more unreleased music than was possible in the analogue days of the early Nineties. When Björn, Benny, Michael Tretow and I spent a day listening to tapes back in 1993, none of the multi-track tapes or the alternate mixes were available in a digital format. Since then, however, all the tapes have been digitized, meaning that it's much easier to access the music. Needless to say, in 1993 I would have wanted to hear much more than I was able to hear during the six hours I spent together with Björn, Benny and Michael, so I'm excited to finally get this opportunity to really delve into the archives.

Moreover, the scope of the book will also be expanded in many other different ways, but without ever losing focus of ABBA's music. Perhaps even more importantly, the prose will be significantly improved - I'm basically re-writing the book from the ground up.

I am going to publish the book myself, so as not to be beholden to a publisher's requirements regarding design, deadlines and so on. I hope to be able to publish towards the end of 2016, but the date may change: making the book as good and as nice-looking as it can possibly be will be my main objective.

I've already begun work on the book, but in order to get it finished and printed I will need to finance the project with the aid of a crowdfunding campaign. The projected start date for the campaign is 28 January, 2015. It will then run for a month, ending on 28 February 2015.

If you're as excited as I am about this brand new and much-improved edition of ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions, please support the crowdfunding campaign - if it fails, the book will not be written; simple as that. With two days until the crowdfunding campaign for the revised, updated and expanded edition of ABBA - The Complete Recording Sessions is launched, I thought it was high time that y'all had the chance to read a few excerpts from the book. Excerpts from the 1973 and 1974 chapters are available below.

Before you start downloading and reading, please read the following:

• I've only written four chapters so far: 1966-1971, 1972, 1973 and 1974. That's why there are no excerpts from ABBA's later years.

• The chapters I have written are only finished in the sense that they have a beginning, a middle and an end. The book is evolving organically, so as new information surfaces, and I talk to more people, receive answers to questions - and so on! - the text will change. In fact, there is a good example of that in the 1974 excerpt: when this was written, the BBC Radio One Waterloo jingle hadn't yet surfaced, so that's why it isn't mentioned in my text.

• Similarly, the design and layout is in no way finished. My designer, Maria Nicholas, has put together these excerpts in order to show the general direction we're heading in. For instance, the pictures you see here are, in many cases, just preliminary images, and will be replaced by other images as work on the design progresses.

• The content in the excerpts is not necessarily chronologically arranged: it has mainly been chosen to show you selected features in the new edition.

The new book will build on the original edition by adding plenty of previously unknown facts about ABBA's recorded work. However, it will also be expanded to include stories on how the record sleeves were made, and vintage review quotes that will provide a view of how the group's music was received at the time - and more!

I am quite sure you can donate more than once but I am not really sure how you go about just donating, and doing so anonymously. It is best to ask those questions on kickstarter - they will be happy to answer any questions relating to the project.

As for being nervous, that is understandable.

If this new version of The Complete Recording Sessions is written and published, I suppose we here in the USA won't be able to get our hands on a copy. To the best of my knowledge, the original version was never published here. I have it, but I got it by mail from the publisher in the UK.

With four days left and only 40% of the way to the required target, it's fairly safe to say the kickstarter crowdfunding campaign is not going to succeed.  CMP is already looking at switching to an e-book option.   Although that will obviously be a much less expensive way to go and therefore attract more willing purchasers, it personally leaves me cold.  It's disappointing but I can appreciate that the cost especially to those who would have to pay more for postage must have been a put off.   Hopefully CMP will take stock and come back with more options that will make this work attainable to a wider readership.

Although 77% achieved with 20 days to go looks very promising, I wonder if it may be deceptive. CMP recalibrated his offer based on the level of interest shown in the first campaign. So if most of the initial backers immediately chip in again, the early progress will be impressive. However, the last 10% may be more difficult to achieve than the first 90%.

So far in this campaign I have mentioned several times about the previously unknown information on ABBA’s recordings that I mean to share with you all in the revised and expanded edition of ABBA – The Complete Recording Sessions. But I haven’t actually revealed very much about what that information might be. Well, time to change that!

The following list features just some of the fascinating tapes I’ve stumbled across in my role as consultant for Polar Music:

• Tiger – an alternate mix, revealing details about the harmony vocals that aren’t noticeable in the familiar mix.

• Happy Hawaii – an alternate mix that’s really different from the one we’ve lived with for the past 38 years. It blew my mind when I heard it.

• Dancing Queen – an early alternate mix that seems to suggest something very interesting regarding the development of that particular recording (no, I’m not talking about deleted verses).

• Fernando – an alternate full-length mix; yes, folks, even Fernando was a “victim” of the razor blade and the sticky tape.

• Voulez-Vous – a rough mix of the original backing track recorded in Miami, before further overdubs and adjustments were made in Stockholm.

• Dream World – an alternate mix with a few interesting differences.

• Our Last Summer – an alternate mix with details from the familiar version missing.

Remember, this is just a selection of stuff I’ve heard “by accident” over the years. Can you imagine how much more there is to hear, once I start going through all the recordings systematically? What does ‘Me And I (with laughter)’ sound like, for instance? And what are the secrets we don’t even know are there to be found?
