My goodness, that stomach! Talk about washboard. Do you mean it in a good or bad way? Oh, it's definitely good. In the US, a "washboard" stomach means it's flat and the person is in great shape. The other term we'd use for her obvious stomach muscles in that pic is "six-pack" (because there are as many as six profound stomach muscles that can be seen in the abdominal area from a lot of exercise there), but I thought that was a little too specific.

We get so many people from different cultures who all like the same thing so we learn along the way. I'm careful what I say because I don't always know what's common to everyone.

That's true, but I'm not completely strange to American slang because American English is the English that I'm exposed to most of the time. Is this particular expression very common, or maybe it's more of a regional thing? And I already guessed correctly what you meant from the context, but I still wanted to make sure

It's pretty common, not so much regional. Although I myself have never even seen an actual washboard and don't know too many Americans who have. We just assume they are and were very flat and solid. Obviously the expression comes from the days before laundromats.

Obviously the expression comes from the days before laundromats. Not only flat but ribbed with slats, so a particularly effective analogy when it comes to ripped abs. Of course, the laundry washboard became a percussion instrument in 1950s skiffle groups, so has an important place in rock and roll history. The transposition is now complete because washboards have long disappeared from the laundry room, but can still be purchased from music stores.
