UK ALBUMS WITH THE MOST B.P.I. PLATINUM AWARDS
(Albums with 7 – or more - Platinum Awards)
In the UK a Platinum Disk for an Album is awarded for every 300,000 Sales
NOTE – The Year in Brackets is their release Year & not the Year in which they went Platinum
The B.P.I. is The British Phonographic Industry
The 2 Queen 'Hits' Albums each have 626,000 Sales added in from a 1994 Double Album, (66,000 each), & a 2000 Triple Album – 'The Platinum Collection', (560,000 each). This was done for the 50th Anniversary of the UK Album Chart in 2006. (As confirmed by UK 'Chart Expert' Alan Jones, in 'Music Week', in September 2009).
This means that anyone who adds up Queen's UK Album Sales will be counting many of their Sales twice, if they simply add the Sales from the 1994 Double CD & 2000 Triple CD. You have to make allowances for the fact that 1,812,000 of them have already been added to the 3 Queen 'Hits' Albums from 1981, 1991 & 1999…..Without their 626,000 ‘enhanced’ Sales, the UK Totals for the 1st & 2nd Queen Hits Albums, would be 5,474,000, (still in 1st place), & 3,274,000, (down from 10th place to 18th), respectively. (The 3rd Queen Hits Album, (1999), was given 560,000 of the 1,680,000 Sales, (to late 2006), of The Platinum Collection, the 2000 Triple CD).
WHAT ALAN JONES SAID IN 'MUSIC WEEK' – W/E 19th SEPTEMBER 2009
“In 1994, it, (Greatest Hits' (One), was issued in a slipcase with Greatest Hits II and in 2000 with Greatest Hits II and Greatest Hits III, ('The Platinum Collection'). As these packages contain the original albums, the decision was made, right or wrong, to share out the sales pro rata. As Greatest Hits I, II and III together have sold 1,680,000, individual tallies for all three have been allocated an extra 560,000 sales. (By “all three”, Alan means that 560,000 Sales, from 'The Platinum Collection', were also added to 'Greatest Hits III', which was released in 1999).
By the same token, Greatest Hits I and II’s combined sales of 132,000 have been split, with an extra 66,000 being added to each. Taking all this into consideration, Greatest Hits has sold a massive 5,780,000 copies. Greatest Hits II, eighth on the list, has sold 3,840,000 copies". ALAN JONES – W/E 19th SEPTEMBER 2009
NOTE – Graceland – Paul Simon. The OCC has revealed, (July 4th 2016), that this 1986 Album is the UK's 51st' Best Seller of All Time'. However, The B.P.I. have yet to give it the 8 Platinum Disks, that reflect that success. It only has 5 – so far, & it got the 5th way back in June 1988. Several of the Albums below it, (in The OCC's Top 60 'All Time' UK Albums), have 8 Platinum Awards & none have less than 7.
