After Take a chance on me had left the UK chart, I think Thank you for the music could have been extracted from 'The Album.'. A surefire chart smash, also boosting The Album. Summer night city would be placed on Voulez vous, but not released as an A side. Several weeks before Voulez vous album is released, I would put out a double A side, 'Chiquitita and As good as new. Follow up Angel eyes, B side Summer night city. Then I have a dream, B side Voulez vous. Then If it wasn't for the nights, B side Love light. Finally Does your mother know, B side Kisses of fire. Just a bit of fun. I just think Thank you for the music would have been a powerful follow up to Take a chance in the spring/summer. Then the Voulez vous album could be released spring 1979.

Then the Voulez vous album could be released spring 1979. That statement sounds as though the Voulez-Vous album was released sometime other than the spring of 1979 when, in fact, that is when it was released.

There was such a gap between singles in 1977 & 1978. I think I remember reading that Hole in your sole was a contender for single release in 1978. I liked TYFTM in 1978 but I have grown less fond of it along along with I have a dream. I find TYFTM a bit like a song you would here at a pantomime and I have a dream lyrics a bit syrupy. I would have gone for a Double A with Eagle. Still love SNC. Probably lost out in 1978 with Grease, Saturday night ffever and Boney m hits gripping the charts. The Album still finished no3 for the year but no. 1 if you discounted various artist albums Grease and SNF. In 1979 I would have released If it wasn’t for the nights at the launch of Voulez Vous album and Does your Mother Know in between Chiquitita and If it Wasn’t for the nights.

ABBA only released two singles in the UK in each of 1977, 1978, 1980 and 1981. I expect they were concerned about overexposure/saturation, but it was a real missed opportunity. Three singles a year, say, would not have been excessive. There were enough great songs on their albums.

I still love Summer Night City too. I have never understood Benny and Bjorn's apparent dislike for the song. I think it's one of ABBA's very best, particularly WITH the beautiful cut introduction. It certainly deserved better than its lowly number five placing in the UK chart. And it should have been on ABBA Gold.

Think Abba were up against it towards the end of 1978. (UK) was in the grip of Grease fever which came to an end quite abruptly and Boney M were the new Abba for 6 months. In that period they could do no wrong but their period of glory was coming to an abrupt end too by April 1979. Abba in their time saw of challenges from the Bee Gees, Punk, Grease, Boney M and Blondie. Other than bad timing I do not understand why it stalled at number 5. I’ve always found it an energetic song. Love both the long and short versions . Heard it was banned from airplay because of a misheard lyric....the f word. It does sound like it. Maybe that didn’t help too if it was not getting enough exposure.

I was a member of the abbasite forum only the last three months it existed. On that forum, I came across an old thread about this. That thread had been locked. I never heard that the song was banned from airplay.

Don’t think TFTM has aged well. Liked it at the time but I was 13 then. I think it’s a bit too twee and might have been a sizeable hit at the time. Leaving it to the 8os was a bad idea. Definitely of its time and the 80s were not it. I’m sure that Abba had been considering Hole in your soul in 1978 as a single release. I wonder had they done so how well it would have done.
