Lately I've been working on a few compilation videos about common words or themes in ABBA songs, like the word "blue" which they happen to say a lot. After uploading my first video about "blue", I got so much positive feedback and was asked to make several other compilations by commenters. If anyone else has any suggestions for more videos like this, I'd love to hear some!

We had a Lyrics thread in which we discussed a few of these repetitions, including a-ha and rhyming couplets like feel/conceal. Unfortunately the thread was moved to the moribund backwater of the 'Games & Polls' section, where it has failed to prosper. Here's a link to it in case it contains anything of interest abbachat.com/thread/177

The feal/conceal one is quite interesting! I might actually make a video based off of that if that's alright! Today I just uploaded another video, this one about all the times they use "dead", "death", "dying", and "die" in the songs.

You'll have to scroll a little to find that thread, but I have moved it to this section. Martin, I had forgotten that it was you who started that thread.

I know this video isn't about common words or themes, but it's a compilation video that I made, so I'll share it here as well.

I'm working on a second part to my Evolution of ABBA songs video, and i was wondering, is Funky Feet considered an early version of dancing queen or is it a song they made later that Bjorn and Benny thought sounded too much like Dancing Queen?

Becky, from what I've heard, the latter is the case-Bjorn and Benny just felt that Funky Feet sounded too much like Dancing Queen.

Hey, Hey Helen Knowing Me, Knowing You One Man, One Woman (kinda) The Winner Takes It All When All Is Said and Done One Of Us Should I Laugh or Cry How about an evolution of love as it develops? Like a timeline? In a crush - She's My Kind Of Girl Declaring their love - Sitting In The Palmtree, Ive Been Waiting For You Both romantically in love - Honey Honey, Andante Andante A few quarrels... - One Man One Woman Divorce as listed above. After the relationship - Angeleyes

I noticed that when they are mentioning some kind of job in their lyrics it is almost always a white-collar one. 1st example: The Day Before You Came: " must have made my desk around a quarter after nine With letters to be read, and heaps of papers waiting to be signed" --> typical office job, some kind of Manager I guess. 2nd example: Hole In Your Soul: "My friend Sam is a chauffeur, Annie goes to school Jerry works at the office, Sue lies by the pool" --> There is some exception although. 3rd example: Nina, Pretty Ballerina: "Every day in the morning on her way to the office"--> again, white-collar job 4th example: Our Last Summer: "And now you're working in a bank"--> maybe this guy works as a cleaner in the bank, but I highly doubt it 5th example: If It Wasn't For The Nights: "I got appointments, work I have to do", "I got my business to help me through the day People I must write to, bills I must pay " --> some office job again So if you can see, ABBA was discriminating poor blue-collar workers What do you think guys? Anyone else noticed?

^^ That's a good point. I hadn't noticed. But there is one exception: in Two For The Price Of One,
He had what you might call a trivial occupation He cleaned the platforms of the local railway station

ABBA often used the word 'funny' when they probably meant to say 'fun'. Not that it would have then rhymed, of course.
In 'Money Money Money', it works ok - 'funny' as in 'strange', still fits the lyrics. In fact, I think it makes it even better.
In 'Does Your Mother Know' and 'Tropical Loveland', it hangs a little more awkwardly.
There might be other examples of the accidental use of the word that I haven't spotted.

But not only does it fit the lyrics, it adds another layer to an already complex song! There are other examples, such as TWTIA, which abounds in lines that I'm fairly sure no one with English as their first language would have put on paper (And I understand/You've come to shake my hand etc.), and yet they work beautifully in this context, because their very stiltedness conveys exactly how you feel when your self-confidence lies in ruins...! Which confirms the general theory that when you're on a roll, even the 'mistakes' go your way!

Agnetha still does this. In a recent interview she was talking about when ABBA split up, how they started to find it less enjoyable than before- "...it wasn't funny anymore." Bless her, I find that so adorable.
