Hi everyone. This is my first post on this site - I have followed these ABBA chatrooms through their various incarnations and closures over the years and it's great to find this one. And I recognise a few of the names on here from years ago. Well done everyone for keeping the magic of this wonderful group'so legacy alive.
Anyway, I would be interested for people's thoughts on my question. I met a girl fellow fan in a crowd of friends a few weeks ago who asked me my favourite Abba songs. I trotted out the standard answers of Dancing Queen, The Winner Takes it All and Knowing Me, Knowing You. But then she blew me out of the water by saying her favourite is a rare B side called Should I Laugh or Cry, and did I know it? We then proceeded to sing the entire song in the middle of the pub, much to our crowd of friends' amusement! So my question is, what would be your top five songs to a casual music fan and an avid fellow Abba fan?
To a casual fan, mine would be: 1) The Name of The Game (hence my login name!) 2) The Winner Takes It All 3) Knowing Me, Knowing You 4) Chiquitita 5) The Day Before You Came
To an avid fan, my top five would be: 1) If It Wasn't for the Nights 2) I've Been Waiting For You 3) Put on Your White Sombrero 4) Just Like That (na na na version) 5) Like An Angel Passing Through My Room
Thanks everyone

Hi everyone... I have followed these ABBA chatrooms through their various incarnations and closures over the years... Hi, welcome. The site seems to be very well frequented at the moment, and has remained friendly for years now. Previous incarnations haven't always managed to tick both boxes for long
I wouldn't make too much of a distinction between the choices for casual and avid fans, except perhaps when it comes to 'Marmite' tracks like TDBYC. I am 100% with you regarding IIWFTN, and probably IBWFY too, though for the casual fan My Love, My Life would do the same job. I understand why POYWS might be included, because the vocals on it are amazing. But as a song, I fear that it's punching well above its weight in any top 5. LAAPTMR is beautiful, but I feel that FATSTAPA shows that even better versions were overlooked. So I would direct the avid fan to the latter.
I think that SOS would have to appear in one or other of my lists, but number one in both categories would be Slipping Through My Fingers.
Many thanks for starting this interesting thread
Edit: I forgot: Hole In Your Soul live for the casual fan who might think that they could only lip synch

It's always good trying to keep the dream alive, and think we do ok on here. As always we could do with some debates and more enthusiasm from members, but over all we survive... top safe 5
1. Dancing Queen 2. TWTIA 3. KMKY 4. TACOM 5. Fernando
ok I like the above and perhaps would feature in a definitive top 20
alternative top 5
1. As Good As New 2. Kisses of Fire 3. Lay All Your Love On Me 4. Lovelight 5. Hole in Your Sole.
like all of us our favourites vary, sometimes daily, but guess a certain few are always close to the top.

3) Put on Your White Sombrero It's nice to see that Put On Your White Sombrero is one of your favorites. I know some fans don't like it, but it has been one of my favorite ABBA songs ever since I first heard it when I got the TYFTM boxed set.

I'll be a nuisance and provide three lists:
My 'Top Five' if talking to a non-fan or someone with marginal knowledge of (and perhaps minimal interest in) ABBA:
Knowing Me Knowing You Eagle Voulez-Vous Take A Chance On Me Gimme Gimme Gimme
My 'Top Five' if talking to a fairly casual fan:
The Visitors ("You don't know it??? You've GOT to hear it...") Eagle ("It really should have been a single in the UK...") Head Over Heels ("No, it wasn't a big hit - a lost gem - you should give it a few more spins!") Slipping Through My Fingers ("It was in 'Mamma Mia!', you know...") Knowing Me Knowing You ("Copper-bottomed classic, I'm sure you'll agree!")
My actual 'Top Five':
The Visitors Eagle Lovelight Head Over Heels Hey Hey Helen

Thanks for your interesting replies everyone. Whilst we all have our favourite songs, it's terrific that we can agree to disagree and still come together to celebrate such a wonderful group. Right, I am now off to another thread to defend Cassandra!
