Even though there has been no official news from Polar yet, Fnac (a French retailer) has listed some things. I think the "Coffret vinyl" is the same as the singles box sets we've had before. The 7 singles would obviously be Chiquitita, Does Your Mother Know, Voulez-Vous, Gimme Gimme Gimme and I Have A Dream. Because Summer Night City was in high demand after last year, Summer Night City must be included. But that leaves one more single. I would love As Good As New to be included but Chiquitita (Spanish) or Estoy Sonando are more likely to be in the box.

Angeleyes would be the only other song that could be included, anything else would make no sense.

That is very interesting - so it's 12" singles this time? Is this to reflect the disco era? I notice that there are two discs called Voulez-Vous - edition 1, edition 2. If each disc is a single, could the second edition be the extended version (perhaps backed by If It Wasn't For The Nights like that Record Store Day release from a few years back)? Or could one of the 12" discs be the LP, so that the box contains everything? Looking forward to more information as it comes. In the meantime, I am daydreaming about it!
The interesting thing about 12" singles is the potential for extended playing times. For instance (without considering unreleased material), it would be nice to think that the Spanish versions could be included as extra tracks on the Chiquitita, GGG and IHAD singles. Could the extended and regular mixes of VV and SNC appear on those singles? Digging further, it is probably too fanciful to imagine that the early version of DYMK and The Chiquitita Story could be included. And let's not even bother dreaming about Just A Notion! So much potential! Imagine if the discs could be: 1A: Summer Night City / 1B: Medley + Summer Night City [long version] 2A: Chiquitita + Chiquitita [Spanish version] / 2B: Lovelight + The Chiquitita Story [never going to happen!] 3A: Does Your Mother Know? / 3B: Kisses Of Fire + DYMK [early rock version - never going to happen!] 4A: Voulez-Vous + Angeleyes / 4B: Voulez-Vous [extended mix] 5A: Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! / 5B: The King Has Lost His Crown + Dame! Dame! Dame! 6A: I Have A Dream / 6B: Take A Chance On Me [live] + Estoy Sonando 7: Voulez-Vous [ALBUM] - picture disc

Apparently, there is a master acetate containing Gimme Gimme Gimme, The King Has Lost His Crown and a rejected cut of The King Has Lost His Crown which the engineer didn't like. (That would be Michael B Tretow) This might be on eBay shortly.

I wonder where the retailer got his information from. 12" singles would be great… and it's likely they would be picture discs again! No hope for any bonus material, though, from my side. I guess we've learned from the past...
By the way, I listened to the Voulez-Vous album recently after some time and it struck me again what a magnificent (and often overlooked) record it is. One of the coolest ABBA made, very fresh, full of energy, marred just a little bit by the inclusion of I Have A Dream maybe. Can't wait for the anniversary re-releases! Hopefully the official announcement comes soon.

I might be in a minority here, but if these really are to be 12” singles, I would have to say I’m not interested!
First question would be why? Polar didn’t release 12” singles, and as the two previous releases covering Arrival and The Album were based on Polar issues, this would be an odd thing to do.
Secondly, only one song (Voulez-Vous) exists as a 12” version (and a rather dodgy one at that, in my opinion). As with the limited release of Lay All Your Love On Me on 12” back in the day (a move that was imposed by Polar and nothing to do with CBS/Epic or other companies) why do it if you have nothing else to offer?
I really do hope the “maxi” is a red herring.
On the plus side I’m glad they are including Summer Night City in this. Releasing it last year as a Record Store Day exclusive was a bit naughty I thought, as the chances of a genuine fan getting one on the day were quite slim. I imagine the artwork will more closely resemble the original single sleeve artwork.
As Voulez-Vous is listed for two singles, it’s reasonable to assume one of them will be the extended version. I’d prefer the UK Angeleyes/Voulez-Vous but as both tracks appear in reverse order on another single and the artwork is similar to the Polar (and international) Chiquitita, it wouldn’t make much sense to include it.
If it was based on the 2014 40-single boxed set, it would be an eight-disc affair with both the Spanish Chiquitita and Estoy Soñando, but as the b-sides of these would duplicate tracks included elsewhere (as they did in 2014) they’ve presumably decided against it.
I’ll wait for official news, but to me, if you start something you carry it through. You don’t start with 7” singles and then for no apparent reason change to 12”. They are supposed to be based on what was originally released, with the picture discs and coloured vinyl being the gimmick, not 12” singles which don’t really serve any purpose.

NOTE -- Perhaps this Post will get a 'lively' reaction here. I've just added it to two ABBA Threads at UKMIX. After all, not everything about ABBA is 'cosy' or 'fun'. Sometimes there are 'controversial' things that can be said - and I've said them, in this Post. (I wonder if anyone here - and elsewhere - will accuse me of not being an ABBA Fan? That one always amuses me, as it is so untrue...).
Benny and Bjorn really don't like giving ABBA Fans 'Bonus' material, on the 'Deluxe' Albums. By 'Bonus', I mean Tracks and Alternative Versions, that we've never had before.
I think that we can pretty much forget about getting any 'unreleased' Tracks on the 'Deluxe' 'Voulez-Vous'. Benny and Bjorn don't believe in such things, and they hardly ever change their minds. With us getting New ABBA Songs, much later in the Year, they probably think that they are 'spoiling' us as it is...
It is rumoured that the ABBA Singles that will be released in a Box Set, (from 'Voulez-Vous'), will be on 12 Inch Vinyl, this time - to reflect the fact that much of that Album is 'Disco'.
Of course, 'Disco' does not 'fit' 'Chiquitita' and 'I Have a Dream', but they will probably be on 12 Inch too. 'Does Your Mother Know' is not really 'Disco' either.
Apparently the 12 Inch Singles will consist of: 'Summer Night City', 'Chiquitita', 'Does Your Mother Know', 'Voulez-Vous' - twice. Which means that, 'Voulez-Vous' will likely have the USA Extended Version on one of the 12 Inch Disks, and the other Disk will have the normal Album version. 'Gimme! Gimme! Gimme', will be on 12 inch too. As will 'I Have A Dream'. They will all have their usual 'B' Sides, except for the Extended 'Voulez-Vous'. I don't know what will be on the 'B' Side of that.
Or - There may be one 12 Inch Disk of the 'Voulez-Vous' Single, with 'Angel Eyes' either on the 'A' Side too, or on the 'B' Side. The 'B' Side could be the Extended 'Voulez-Vous', (USA - 1979), either on its own, or with 'Angel Eyes'. The 7th 12 Inch Disk may simply be the 'Voulez-Vous' Album. With all 7 Disks put in a fancy Box...
There is no use any ABBA Fans getting upset, if there is nothing 'Unreleased' on the 'Deluxe' 'Voulez-Vous'. Benny & Bjorn know what the Fans would like, and it became plain a very long time ago, that they are not interested in that. It is their Music. They control it. ABBA Fans have 2 choices - to buy each 'Deluxe' Album, or to not buy each 'Deluxe' Album. That's called a 'Reality Check'...
I recall 'Chiquitita' being on 12 Inch Vinyl in Germany, in 1979. Polydor said it was a 'Maxi' Single. It was just the usual 7 Inch version on 12 Inch Vinyl. The same with the 12 Inch 'Does Your Mother know' in France. The same with the 12 inch 'The Winner Takes it All' in the UK. The same with the UK, Irish, German etc. 'Lay All Your Love On Me', in 1981. ABBA didn't believe in doing anything 'Special' for those releases. It was a case of Fans paying extra - for 12 Inch Vinyl - when the Tracks were the same as the 7 Inch versions...(Alan Jones, of 'Music Week' called the 12 Inch 'Lay...' poor value for money. He pointed out that it was twice the price of the rest of the UK's Hit Singles, when it was just a 7 Inch Single really. Nothing exciting for the money. Not even 2 'B' Sides. He predicted that the price and poor value, would cheat ABBA out of a UK Top 5 Hit - and he was 100% right - No.7).
If there are several 12 Inch Singles off the 'Deluxe' 'Voulez-Vous', it will remind me, that my 2 favourite Tracks of it, were not only left on the Album, but they were not even 'B' Sides ' 'As Good as New' and 'If It Wasn't For The Nights'...

I will hedge a bet that Universal will release 2 seperate sets. 1 set will consist of songs in a 12" format, (probably as coloured vinyl), the other will be 45 singles picture discs. This formating is in keeping with what has already been issued in the past couple of times, so why change? What songs are actually issued is hopfully going to be in keeping with the Voulez-Vous LP as it was issued in 1979, in others words no unreleased material, other B sides, etc, etc. In my opinion and as somewhat of a purist, the following should NOT be included, GGG and SNC. The reasons being are, GGG was not on the original LP and SNC had it's 40th anniversary last year, it's a song from 1978! That being said, Universal will most likely do some major marketing overkill on this commemorative package because it's all about the money machine. On a side note, GGG should have it's debut for RSD 2019 in April,as a 12" format!

abbafun, 12" would be a change, as neither Arrival nor The Album had any 12" singles released for their respective anniversaries. Actually, if Universal really considers the 12" format, I would prefer it the other way round - the box of 7" coloured vinyls and separate 12" picture discs… As for GGG and SNC, I guess they will be included, as Fernando was included in the set released for Arrival. GGG as a RSD release is a good idea but we already know that ABBA (and related) are nowhere to be seen during this years Record Store Day unfortunately.

Michal, Thanks for the input. A 2 set scenario of some kind or the other will most likely prevail. I've been a fan and collector for too long, so I am in for the full count no matter what. Just as a tiny point of reference, Fernando was in included on Arrival in some territories, so having that song as part of that anniversary issue made sense. Late editions for RCD have happened in the past, so here's to hoping for GGG!!
This is a little off topic, but Bjorn has let slip a little that a new album is not out of the question, as Benny and he have apparently written more material!

Well, yes, I suppose both colour vinyls and picture discs as well as the half-speed mastered album will be released. They won't break the series. As for GGG, I haven't realized some releases were added to the RSD list at some later point. So maybe somebody should make a suggestion :-)
As for the off-topic part... it is not so long ago that Björn insisted there won't be any new album for sure… but then again a few years ago he insisted ABBA would never ever record together again. :-) However, I will believe it the moment I will hold the album in my hands...

Oh yah, I forgot about the half speed master! Well there goes the budget...haha not! As for RCD, it was in part a little wishful thinking, I have to concede that if there is no entry from the ABBA camp by now then there probably won't be.
As far as a new full length album goes, yes, "a bird in hand..."

I’m intrigued... why would anyone want - let alone get excited by - ABBA included in RSD? Plenty of people might not have a participating store near to them, and you have to get there early (and probably queue up for hours before the shop even opens) and even then you might not be in luck. You might find it’s already sold out or they never had it in the first place.
And then you go home to find hundreds on eBay at extortionate prices, and that’s the reason you lost out.
I might have been interested in the SNC one last year, I would have bought it if it was a level playing field. As it wasn’t, I didn’t get it as I won’t pay to someone out to make a huge profit.
Fernando was included on Arrival, but only in Australia and New Zealand. That alone isn’t the reason it was included in the Arrival releases. As a non-album single, Arrival is its natural adoptive home, as Voulez-Vous is for SNC and GGG.

Hello Alan, I should have qualified my argument with respect to Fernando as being that that may have been partial reason it was included. Neither SNC or GGG were included in pressings of Voulez-Vous in an any territory, so far as I am aware. Yes, they have over time found their place in the relm that is "Voulez-Vous" and Universal Music will probably see same when it comes to if and when they decide to issue something, because they want to create an event, so it would stand to reason. I was merely speaking as a bit of purist.
To your point about RCD, yes they are an early to rise, long line ups and crowded stores affair, but oh! so much fun dispute the mayhem. You meet so many different kinds of music lovers, with great stories and experiences, including many ABBA fans, even many that are not there to snap up any ltd. ABBA titles, but are there to grab a J. Hendrix reissue for example. My experiences have been great. They are by enlarge a very organized, orderly, and great fun event, my it continue! About eBay, yes I agree with you that many sellers are taking advantage, knowing that Ltd. editions fetch inflated prices. My displeasure lies most with retailers and who are clearly taking advantage. They merely try to cash in because they happen to get access to purchase multiple copies from a distributor, where as you or I would be restricted to a single unit. Then there is the issue of "pre-sales" where by such sales tactics seem outside the scope of what the RCD event is supposed to be, not sure how they get away with that!

For me the RSD means an opportunity to release something which we wouldn't get at all otherwise. Also I see it as a kind of prestigious matter, which draws attention to ABBA. Maybe I'm positive towards it because during the few past years I was extremely lucky to get a copy of every ABBA-related RSD release at retail prices even though I have no participating store nearby and actually, there's none that would have been able to get a copy of any of these ABBA releases in the whole country (!). I can understand it is irritating to see these special releases resold on eBay but on the other hand, I'm usually not so desperate to have them to actually seek for them if I'm not able to obtain them on the RSD itself.

RSD may be fun but some aspects of real life can get in the way of queuing from the crack of dawn for goodies. Me, I'm too old for it and I work on the principle that if the artists and/or their label really wanted me to have the item, they'd release it properly. I attempted RSD a couple of times but never got what I was after. If there's something that I think I'd like, I usually check online to see what's available. The prices are usually inflated to eye-watering proportions by scalpers on ebay and even some fan pages on Facebook. On only two occasions did I find the item I wanted at the RSD price and so I got my hands on the 12" blue sparkly vinyl edition of Voulez-Vous/If It Wasn't For The Nights and Frida's gorgeous 1971 self-titled album. But that was rare luck.
As for the Voulez-Vous 40th anniversary plans, I would prefer a box set of 7" vinyl to fit with the other sets. If they are replicating the cover artwork using the same methods employed for the previous sets, then the larger format will betray the poor scans far more clearly. If Fnac were able to commit the blunder, it means that the pre-release information is already with online suppliers. Why not share it with with fans now, even if it's months before we lay our hands on anything?

Well, not much news about Voulez-Vous in the magazine actually. Just a short notice that Polar Music plans to "issue some great items, along the lines of what we saw for Arrival and The Album" printed beside a photo of the half-speed mastered album. So, we have to wait a little longer…
The most exciting part of the whole magazine for me was the interview with Bernard Löhr, where he goes into detail about recording the two new songs. However the most fascinating information for me was, when he revealed that the original Swedish theatre version of Kristina från Duvemåla was fully recorded (both sound and vision), apparently in professional quality. When asked when it would be released he replied that the recording was made more or less just to have it documented but that it's "too good to not show it to everybody".... Well, I really don't understand this. If Björn and Benny decided to let Just Like That rot in the vaults, so be it. But how can they withhold this kind of material and for what reasons is a real mystery for me...

Polar/Universal will most likely release sets exactly to what has already been done with Arrival and The Album. Just a bit wide open on what songs will make the cut for singles reissued. I am hoping it is kept true to form of the actual LP release in 1979 and that 12" coloured vinyl instead of 7" format be done this time around.

So these really are 12” records then? When I saw them, I was trying to work out if the holes were big enough for them to be 7”, but as the grooves clearly match a 12”, these photos look as though they confirm it.
Not sure I’m bothered about this. A 12” box with seven records in it would take up too much space. Apart from Voulez-Vous extended, none of them are 12” versions so really don’t need that format. It doesn’t fit with how these singles were originally released.
I might change my mind, but at present I pass. These could have looked just as good on 7”, and would take up less space!

I agree with Alan - as pretty as they are, this doesn't make a lot of sense. Also, the extended Voulez-Vous was only released in this A-side/B-side 12" format for Record Store Day, more than 30 years after the fact. In fact, making this a 7" set might have made that particular single a tad more desirable for those of us who have the RSD 12". And, of course, it would continue a very smart looking 7" box set series.
Anyway, it's happening. None of us is compelled to part with our hard-earned cash.
We can soon enough start speculating on the contents of a Super Trouper box!

There might still be some hope (or perhaps more confusion)... I just googled “ABBA Voulez-Vous 40th anniversary” and this came up as one of the options. Going into it you just get “page not found” as it’s been taken down, but within the search results it does mention 7”. Voulez-Vous (7" Picture Disc) – uDiscover ... shop.udiscovermusic.comTo celebrate the 40th anniversary of ABBA's Voulez-Vous album, a limited-edition 7” single picture disc of 'Voulez-Vous' has been produced . US$13.98 · In stock The Steve Hoffman forum also picked up on it on the Universal site before it was taken down. The opening post doesn’t mention it being 7” or 12” (appears to have got its wires crossed though as it mentions a picture disc box): forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/abba-voulez-vous-40th-anniversary-7th-june-2019.827914/

There will also be a half speed remastered 45rpm double set issued just like it was for Arrival and the Album. Projected release is for sometime around June. I'm not so sure that it will be a 12" set of what looks blue glitter, but that certainly would be hot if it is!!!!

Alan, HOMETIME, in the beginning I was quite keen on the idea of 12" singles this time (at least the Picture discs would look fabulous), but you're probably right that for keeping the series consistent, 7" would be actually better after all and a 7" box would look better placed alongside the Arrival and The Album sets, especially if the next one is again 7". We will see. However, the photos above make me wonder - where are the Picture discs for DYMK and VV/Angeleyes? It would be a pity to omit them...

Michal, I'm sure there will be picture discs for all seven singles. It would be bizarre to randomly skip two. The image released seems to suggest a blue-white splash colouring for all of the non-picture-disc singles, but I am hoping they will continue with block colour vinyl. 7 June is not too far away, so I imagine that the preorders will start soon. I wonder if the €70 price tag Fnac leak will lead to slower sales than the previous sets?
|
|
|
Post by abbafun on Apr 9, 2019 6:23:01 GMT
I imagine the price points will be substantially higher since these sets hold more titles then the previous releases, not to mention that one set will most likely be a 12" formatting. It might just deture people from buying all the sets being offered. I still think Universal went too deep by including GGG and SNC, plus the dance mix of VV, which was a RCD title a few years back, it's kinda just a bit of a repeat, however it will satisfy some that missed out on getting it the first time around.
