The Concert Set List by Year
1974: 1 1975: 2 1976: 3 1977: 3 1978: 1 1979: 4 1980: 2 1981: 2 2021: 2
I instinctively think of say KMKY as a 1977 song - that's when it was a single/#1. But of course released on Arrival in 1976.
1979 at the time, at least in the UK seemed a dip in quality and success. But ABBA songs from that year have proved the test of time. Conventional wisdom 1 challenged. Don't Shut Me Down in this snippet (7.25) and the show sounds "flat". Is it really that ISHFIY which has the killer chorus of the two? Conventional wisdom 2 challenged.
Finally, Australia. I have my doubts about the show being transported there. It simply wouldn't have the commercial viability - or longevity.

That’s lovely to see. I was there exactly a week before…. If only I’d known! Damn!
I wonder what it feels like to see something that looks like you but isn’t? I can’t imagine any of ABBA regularly watch themselves in videos and TV appearances from back in the day, but this would be a very different experience. Only the talky bits are really them, and the cameos at the end. Agnetha especially must have thought, “I never danced like that!”

I've definitely mentioned this on Youtube but I don't think I have on here, so apologies if I'm repeating myself. ABBA did motion capture for 22 songs, but there are 20 in the show. How many unseen ones depends on whether Eagle and Voulez Vous (& DYMK) were originally motion captured, or if they were ALWAYS going to have the animated sections and the live band showcase in the case of the latter. If those songs weren't motion captured, it takes it down to only 17 in the current show, which leaves another 5 that were which are different to the 20 songs in the current show. We can more or less guarantee TACOM, ST and then maybe MMM and/or TNOTG, so what do you think the other 1 or 2 are? I still think there's a strong chance they have IIWFTN as one of them. When or even if they change the setlist at some point is immaterial, I just want to know if all the other motion capture songs are going to be well-known singles in your opinion or if you think a couple of other album tracks will have been slipped in. I still want Angeleyes, as that fits both camps depending on which country you are from.

There’s also Waterloo, bjorenny, not actually performed in the show, therefore just 16 of 20 songs in the current show with ABBATar performances.

I’d go as far as to say that Waterloo is the worst of all the sequences in the show. The cartoon ones I’m fine with. The band one I don’t like but respect the fact that they have to have their showcase. Waterloo, however, is just lazy. I can watch any of those performances anytime, I haven’t come to the show to see this. Plus, stood right at the front (as I was on two of my three visits, though it was my choice) I could barely see anything anyway.
Even the two songs behind the screen were OK, though I’d much prefer it if they weren’t.
Once the 50th anniversary year is up, I’d like to see Waterloo replaced. If they really have to acknowledge it, why not have the ABBATars in their Waterloo costumes?

MMM is likely too but probably not TNOTG - it's a fantastic song but slow and wouldn't fit the atmosphere of the show well. I can't think off the top of my head of other 'deep cuts' they might have chosen. Maybe AGAN at a stretch?

We know 100% that super trouper, mmm and chance were motion captured. Benny said so in the 2023 BBC newsnight interview.

Someone said that Money Money Money would never be in the show, as for some reason it “didn’t work”. Not sure what the source of that is though. I think it was Benny at some point (an interview in March 2022?)

MMM wouldn’t work in the show but Hole in Soul? I think the audience would go crazy for MMM and of course TACOM and probably ST too. These guys also think JLT is not good enough but I am the City and Little Things are fine?

These guys also think JLT is not good enough but I am the City and Little Things are fine? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Plus they reworked it and released it as recorded by Gemini so maybe see ABBA's version as a prototype the public was never meant to see. Hole In Your Soul in the Voyage concert was a pleasant surprise. I'd bet money that Take A Chance On Me was originally song #2 in the setlist, but they changed their minds at some point because The Visitors followed by Hole In Your Soul better reflects the diversity of ABBA's overall back catalogue + it's two deep cuts straight away rather than going right into the hits everyone knows.

Hole In Your Soul has always been one of my favourite album tracks, and I prefer it to several singles. Upbeat, energetic, tons of 3rd voice, amazing!

I don't think the ABBAtars in Waterloo costumes would fit in the concept of the show as an important part is that they have newly designed costumes. For my taste, they could skip the Waterloo sequence altogether. Unfortunately it is a banger with the audience in every show. I also wonder, if the limiting factor for future changes in the Show really is the question for which Songs ABBA did perform in their motion capture suits because as we know, they already used younger "stunts" of themselves to fit the choreography and KI will be able to mimik e.g. a Frida singing Our Last Summer. The pre-recorded Songs will not be the limiting factor in the future. In case, they really head für Las Vegas, they would definitely need to have TACOM in the Show, as it was ABBA's second greatest Hit in the US chartwise.

Benny’s comment about Money Money Money was that it was “no fun to play”. I’m assuming he’s referring to the live band playing it, not him. In the same interview, Benny said there were about 24 songs done for motion-capture and Björn remarked that there were “four left”. However, he’s ignoring the fact that four in the existing show aren’t performed by the ABBATars so that could be eight altogether, though four of those could be the four in the show (Voulez-Vous, Eagle, Does Your Mother Know, Waterloo). However, as Björn can get a bit forgetful/economical with the truth, not sure how much emphasis to place on the “four left” comment. It was a 45-minute interview filmed in Metronome studio in 2022: - the bit about which tracks to include starts at 32:20. Interestingly, Take A Chance On Me is specifically mentioned as an example of a song they said they had to play but decided which ones of those to take out in order to include lesser-known stuff that they wanted in there. It suggests that Benny argued the case to leave out Money Money Money and that ABBA had full control over which songs were used. Björn makes some comment about “killing your darlings”. baab, what about the Dancing Queen (video) costumes? Amended versions of those are seen in the show, and Benny even remarks that they’re as uncomfortable now as they were the first time (or something like that).

^ Yeah, Alan, I thought this could be mentioned, but in this case it is a modern Interpretation of those Jumpsuits and this Nicki fabric is "en Vogue"!
For my taste you cannot reimagine this old Waterloo junk :-D
But it is my personal taste, maybe the 50th Anniversary of Waterloo is overstretching my tastebuds Here, especially with this dreadfull "The Singles..." cover at its peak :-D

Since the interview you cite, they were intervewed by Victoria Derbyshire for BB2 newsnight and confirmed the 3 previously mentioned tracks. Its all theoretical though, as like many hard core fans Ive been appalled by this years "releases". The forthcoming one is no.1426 in the Amazon best sellers this morning so im expecting a massive flop. Quite frankly as they seem to care so little for us, perhaps its time to move on to pastures new?

I guess most of us moved onto pastures new Years ago, Voyage brought us back albeit for a short time and we move on again... Abba are a good friend , they don't need to be there all of the time but when you meet again it's just like yesterday, and that will be the case for the rest of my life..
Yes this anniversary has been a tremendous let down in so many ways, such a shame, are we going to have to wait until the 75th... when all of them and probably most of us will be long gone , Id be 87 !!!! When we get something new...lol... I've virtually given up all hope now and I'm ok with that, yes a final few new things would have been fantastic, instead we get boring and of no interest to most " 50" I do question who thought of this idea.. the company or the group? ...
But please add a new song to the set list of Voyage before the 18th December, when I go again for the 2nd time... not much to ask for is it ?....... probably...

Might be worth considering that, on BBC Radio 2's 'ERAS: ABBA' (Part 5) - Svana Gisla said there were 'lots' of ABBA songs that could be included in ABBA Voyage which had not yet made the show.
Obviously it depends how you interpret that one word....

Now that Abba voyage has had 900 plus show it's time there changed the setlist to include Money money money. Take a chance on me . Super trooper and One of us

A change in setlist would be nice, and every song you listed would be a good addition... except perhaps One Of Us. Not because it's not a great song, because it is, but because it doesn't fit the 'ambience' of Voyage very well. Presumably this is why The Name Of The Game also isn't there.

You could also say that with WAISAD and DSMD too.

WAISAD fits in its own way by acting as the start of a 'slow' bittersweet section, which continues into the two Voyage songs but then goes back to upbeat with Waterloo.
Plus the whole notion of the ABBAtars having 'something new to sing' was the whole reason they recorded new songs in the first place so DSMD and ISHFIY are never leaving the setlist for that reason alone.

Post by johnny on Oct 21, 2024 21:01:47 GMT
I think ISHFIY cones across well in the concert. The trouble is there's 3 lesser known songs in a row. Both WAISAD and DSMD are too slow foe the show. Don't sound anywhere as good as the studio versions. And the visuals are very poor with that screen behind the screen thing. DSMD in particular looks and sounds very pedestrian. That very catchy chorus is lost.
