The thing is, there are basically two ABBAs: there's the one/two-dimensional ABBA that exists for people who buy 'Gold', enjoy 'Mamma Mia!' and love to hear 'Dancing Queen' at a wedding disco; then there's the three/four-dimensional ABBA that we 'superfans' adore - the 'proper' ABBA who made great albums and evolved massively in a musical sense over their decade in existence. Virtually everything that's happened on the ABBA front over the last decade has revolved round one/two-dimensional ABBA and maximising the market for it (up to and including the ABBAtars), and virtually all of Bjorn's energies (in particular) seem to have focused squarely on it. Almost no attention/energy has been devoted to perpetuating/re-invigorating three/four-dimensional ABBA - apart perhaps from the recording of the two new songs. These songs, then, are clearly the exception rather than the rule. In themselves, their existence seems to be grossly undervalued by the ABBA 'organisation' and they lie well outside the main thrust of whatever 'ABBA' is these days. They appear to be considered a marginal matter, whereas people like us know/hope/pray that they could potentially provide one last blinding flash of 'proper' ABBA before it's too late.

I wonder if ABBA will 'introduce' us to the New Songs, at some time during the ABBA Exhibition, at the 02? It runs from December 2019 to the end of August 2020. Perhaps, we will see The ABBAtars 'singing' at least one New Song there, as the Months get closer to August 2020?
ABBA could achieve that by just showing the Video there, for 'I Still Have Faith In You', which Bjorn has told us about more than once. The ABBAtars will be in that, and it could be 'Premiered' at the 02 Exhibition...

It's curious to me how closely Bjorn, as he makes the transition from late-middle to old age, has seemingly come to resemble his old mentor, Stig Anderson, in terms of business-dealing as an activity in itself appearing to be the thing that drives him on. It's been a good while since I read it, but I remember Carl Magnus Palm's Bright Lights, Dark Shadows depicting Stig in his last years and days as a somewhat isolated, painted-into-a-corner figure, making cold and unsatisfying (in the broader existential sense), deals and investments. If there was much doubt that it was the other three (plus Mike Tretow) who were, before all else, artists/craftspersons, then their relative absence from the ABBA spotlight in recent times (I always think Benny looks as though he's had to be dragged away from his keyboards or his armchair and slippers, whenever he's pictured these days at an opening), in contrast to Bjorn's very visible involvement in things like the creation of the museum, the Mamma-Mia! franchises, the spin-off nightclubs-cum-eateries, as well as this will-it-or-won't-it-happen ABBAtars thing, surely extinguishes it.

That's how I think of Benny, too. Björn is definitely keeping the ABBA flag flying. Where does he get the energy? They are all knocking on a bit but they live comfortable lives that won't have the stresses most ordinary people have. So they may live well into old age and even outlive a few of us (relative) whippersnappers.
I just WISH they'd get a wriggle on! It's already late! The dawn is coming.

They are all knocking on a bit but they live comfortable lives that won't have the stresses most ordinary people have. They have all been afforded like few others, the opportunity to live outright dementedly extravagant and opulent lives, if they so wish. Which is why it's such a shame, to me, that rather than guarding and being sparing with what will ultimately become the most meaningful part of their legacy, the music, the colossally wealthy Bjorn, by farming it out for this business enterprise and that, risks undermining its chances of being seen, now and in the future, as a strong and discrete and integrated ouevre.

^Oh yes, orf! That's exactly how I feel but was unable to express adequately! That's my fear. I'm not even sure it's not already too late. I really do feel the music has been 'cheapened' by Mamma Mia! and everything surrounding it. It went too far. Just my little old opinion of course but that's how I feel. There's not enough SERIOUS consideration of the MUSIC. ABBA have been turned into a karaoke act, a funny turn. I picture Meryl Streep strutting around like a maniac at the end of the first film asking the audience if we "want another one". I genuinely wanted to hurl my drink at that irritating face on screen and yell, "No! Not if it's performed by you or any of that other lot."
Yep, while Björn and others must be raking it in from this party malarkey (and previous shenanigans), the legacy of the group is being tarnished. Sad.

I wonder if ABBA will 'introduce' us to the New Songs, at some time during the ABBA Exhibition, at the 02? I That's perfectly possible (though probably a bit unlikely) and would still broadly fit in with the notion that the songs' primary role is to 'support' other activities rather than being, at their heart, an end in themselves driven by a kind of primordial need to make new music. I suppose, in my imagination, I see Bjorn picking up the phone to Benny 2 or 3 years ago and saying "hey, let's write some new songs" whereas, to my mind, it's vastly more likely he picked up the phone and said "hey, we need a couple of new songs to support our upcoming commercial ventures". Nothing inherently wrong with that, but as fans I think we always like to kid ourselves that our musical heroes (whoever they are) are driven overwhelmingly by a love of the music, rather than by filthy lucre. Part of the deification process, I suppose! We like to believe they operate on a higher plane than the common run of humankind.

If we are 'only' getting 2 or 3 New ABBA Songs, I wonder if Universal will add them to 'ABBA Gold' at some stage?
Otherwise they will be very unusual ABBA 'Singles', that are not included on any ABBA Albums at all.
In the UK, the Double 'Forever Gold' CD was not allowed to have any of its 61,000 Sales added to either 'Gold' or 'More Gold', even though it contained both ABBA Compilations. It was because it had too many Tracks, from each Album, (19 + 20), to be allowed to count towards the Sales of those Albums. (The Sales of the 'Gold' CD + DVD Double Albums, (2004 & 2010), were allowed to be added to 'Gold', as the DVD Disk had exactly the same Songs on it as the CD. Except that the 2004 DVD had 18 Videos on it, as 'The Name Of The Game' was left off it, for some unknown reason).
However, UK Chart Rules would allow 'Gold' to be re-issued with a 2nd CD of 8 Tracks, and that 'Gold' would count towards the Sales of the 'Gold' that was released in 1992.
That's why Lady GaGa was able to re-issue 'The Fame' in 2010, with an 8 Track Bonus CD added to it. The Bonus CD was 'The Fame Monster'. The UK Chart Company allowed the Double CD to have all of its Sales added to 'The Fame'. (This was because the Bonus CD only had 8 New Songs on it).
The Bonus 'Gold' CD could contain the 2 or 3 New Songs, plus ABBA Hits, that I've seen many people say should have been on 'Gold'. Such as: 'The Day Before You Came', 'Summer Night City', 'Angel Eyes', 'Eagle' etc.
The truth is that Universal know that they'd make more cash from an 'Enhanced' 'Gold', than from just releasing the New Songs alone. I'm not saying that they won't release the New Songs as 'Singles', but they'd make a lot more cash, if they were also added to 'ABBA Gold'.
Universal would not be blamed for doing that, as the entire Global Music Market is no-where near as big as it once was. In the UK, it now looks like only Adele and Ed Sheeran can sell huge numbers of Albums. All other Acts are struggling...

^^I was thinking the same . Would Abba release a re hashed More Gold to include the new singles? Never really thought about including them on Abba Gold. That could be the push that sees Abba Gold overtake Queen Greatest Hits which has had the advantage of including its vinyl sales from the early 80s prior to cds replacing the vinyl format. Abba Gold never had fans replacing the vinyl format as it was released in the 90s when cd was the normal format. Think that gave Queen an advantage of about 1 million or more as their fans replace their vinyl Greatest Hits with cd. The new songs with Idox5,Angel Eyes, Ring Ring, Honey Honey , When all is said and done and Summer night city would be welcome additions and maybe dropping TYFTM. Every time I hear that song now I just think of pantomime.

My hunch is that the new songs will first appear on whatever tie-in album is released for this ABBAtar tour extravaganza. With all of the investment this project has sucked up, I bet they will be anxious to recoup as much as possible through multiple releases. If the music used in the show is tweaked/remixed/reimagined, then it makes sense to me that a standalone album would emerge. If Gold is to be "topped up", my guess is that they might use Waterloo's 50th anniversary as the motive. But - and I'm sure Colin can clarify - would a revised tracklist affect Gold's chart statistics? Is there a risk that it could be seen as a new album (albeit with the same title)? I'm not sure whether that would be a big deal for ABBA and/or Universal. Would an update of The Definitive Collection maybe make a smidge more sense, given that it includes all the singles? Tart it up with new sleeve notes and packaging? A four-disc vinyl release? It's my favourite compilation, as it covers the releases in chronological order and the artwork is handsome and dignified.
As for I Still Have Faith In You and Don't Shut Me Down, I still wonder how the formats will be handled for the eventual single releases. Will reworked classics from the show appear as B-sides of vinyl editions? CD singles no longer seem to exist, but could Universal resurrect the format for novelty value? With cassettes back in our shops, could they release cassingles?
I'm glad that Bennybjorn mentioned the elephant in the room. These delays are contributing to a horrible game of brinkmanship. The flipside of that coin is that they could be looking at life and realising that there is more to it than a bunch of new songs. They might be too busy enjoying the important things in their lives to worry about what happens with a career they stepped away from years ago.

^^ The existing ABBA Gold can’t be added to, as it’s the maximum CD length of one hour 20 minutes. A second disc added has been done many times before and that’s boring. I think you’re right, if they removed tracks to add some, it couldn’t be classed as the same album (otherwise 2006’s Number Ones album may as well have been).

As Alan has pointed out that "ABBA Gold" cannot be added to, in that case what if the record companies decided to release another ABBA hits compilation with the two new songs included what would be your ideal tracklist ? Mine as follows,
Voulez-Vous Money Money Money SOS The Name Of The Game Super Trouper Chiquitita Mamma Mia Gimme Gimme Gimme ( A Man After Midnight ) Knowing Me Knowing You The Winner Takes It All I Still Have Faith In You Don't Shut Me Down One Of Us Fernando Take A Chance On Me Dancing Queen I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do Waterloo I have omitted "Does Your Mother Know", "I Have A Dream", "Thank You For The Music" and "Lay All Your Love On Me" because of the time length issues of the CD. This is only an idea of mine.

It’s all ifs buts and maybes, and we can but dream of what will happen if it ever happens!!
As for the album.. well if B&B could be bothered with a little re-imagining / engineering remixing or whatever, I’d be tempted by the following...in no particular order...
I Still Have Faith In You Dont Shut Me Down Dreamworld Put On Your White Sombrero I Am The City. Slowly Elaine Should I Laugh Or Cry Lovelight Cassandra You Owe Me One id even like Dancing Queen with that missing verse...
Thats 11/12. tracks, plus another one or two, there you have it Opus 10. We may know the vast majority, the general public..no its better than another Gold.. but we will probably end up with ABBAtar the album, with 2 new tracks and (as Benny hinted ) re-imagined old tracks..
we wait..🤔

I wonder if ABBA will allow The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, to add Orchestral backing, to several of their Songs, and release it as an Album? It is not an 'outrageous' idea. it has been done several times in recent Years. The Carpenters did it. It was done to 3 Elvis Presley Albums - 2 of which were recent No.1's for him. It was done to create 2 huge Roy Orbison Albums. Plus a Buddy Holly 'Hits' Album. The only one that was a failure, was when the Prague Symphony Orchestra added themselves to a Billy Fury 'Hits' Album last Year - 'The Symphonic Sound of Fury'. I like many of Billy's 1960's Hits, but the Orchestra added nothing much to them at all. His biggest UK Seller - 'Halfway To Paradise' - is on it twice. Once in the original Hit form, and once with 'Added Vocals' by Vince Eager, who was a Pop Act in the 1960's, but he had hardly any success. He turns Billy's Hit into a Duet, and as Vince can no longer Sing, (at all), it is one of the worst things that I've ever heard! The Video for it is on You Tube. Well, Billy's Album only reached No.53, as the Orchestra and Vince Eager made it rather a terrible mess...
However, ABBA could have a splendid Royal Philharmonic Orchestra Album. I'm sure that it would be a Hit too. It is just a matter of Benny & Bjorn agreeing to it. It would be created at London's Abbey Road Studio, where The Beatles Albums were recorded, and where ABBA's 'Half-Speed' Albums were worked on. I see nothing wrong with the idea at all. In the case of The Carpenters, Richard himself actually Conducted the RPO, as the Album was being made. I'm not sure if Benny or Bjorn would get that involved, on an ABBA one, but they might...

Alan -- I'm aware that a 2nd Disk of ABBA Hits, added to 'Gold', has been done before. However, the difference would be that this time, Disk 2 would have some New ABBA Songs on it. Not once has that been done before. It is not the same as just making Disk 2 about 8 'Further ABBA Hits' - taken from 'More Gold'. Any more than 8 'Further' Tracks and The OCC would refuse to count it as being 'ABBA Gold'. About 8 extra Tracks - on a 2nd Disk - is the limit in the UK. So, we could have 2 or 3 New Songs, plus 5 or 6 Tracks off 'More ABBA Gold'.
The 2014 Triple 'Gold' CD was not allowed to have even 1 of its UK Sales added to 'Gold'. It had far too many extra Tracks in it. There were the 19 'Gold' Tracks, the 20 'More Gold' Tracks and Disk 3 was 20 'B' Sides. That's 40 Added Tracks! The OCC told me, that there was no way, that it could have any Sales added to 'Gold'. A 'Gold' with an 8 Track Disk 2 would be counted as the same as the 1992 'ABBA Gold', as far as Sales are concerned...

I would love Opus 10 but with mostly new tracks. The two new songs, I am the city and TDBYC and at a push Should I laugh or cry if it was reworked with improved lyrics. As much as I like the harmonies, Sombrero has cringeworthy lyrics. Cassandra is too dated . As is Under Attack. I was not keen on Slowly. Nice enough but not exciting enough to make it onto an Abba album. Benny has been churning out tunes for years since Abba. I am sure there must be enough for Björn to work with. Even Abba versions of I Know Him so well and One night in Bangkok would be welcome.

By now all 4 of ABBA must be 100% aware, that by recording any New Songs at all, they have started a lot of their Fans having 'Dreams' of an entire Album. The endless 'Delays', to let us have the New Songs, has added to the 'New ABBA Album' hopes. This is because of pure logic. They recorded 2 New Songs in June 2017. Since then, they have had time to record at least 2 New Albums. Therefore, the idea that they may have recorded 1 New Album does not seem too much for Fans to ask for.
Sadly, it looks like ABBA were not joking, when they said that there is not going to be any New Album.
Madonnabba thinks that ABBA could create 'Opus 10', by simply recording several old Benny & Bjorn Hits, for themselves. Plus finishing doing 'Just Like That' as ABBA, or giving us a version of it that is already finished. All of which would be easy for ABBA to do, as they need not even come up with 10 to 12 totally New Songs. Unfortunately, I don't think that ABBA want to even do that for 'The Fans'. It looks like we will get 2 or 3 New Songs and that is it.
To be honest, it often looks like ABBA wish to give their Fans the bare minimum. As if we are asking too much, by wanting anything more.
Instead, they seem to just want to rake most of their cash in from variations on 'Mamma Mia!', these days. With every Song connected with it, Tracks that their Fans have already had for Decades. But, we get them in 'Mamma Mia!' sung, (mostly), nowhere near as well as ABBA's originals.
I wonder what Bjorn & Benny will come up with if The ABBAtars 'Project' flops, or is cancelled? ABBA Fans would want a New ABBA Album, but the 2 Guys are more likely to give us a 3rd 'Mamma Mia!' Film. It is called taking the easiest shortcut to make more wealth. What 'The Fans' would like never seems to be a priority...

Following on from your post, Colin, maybe they just don't have much ambition anymore with regard to ABBA and new music? It seems that way if they have ruled out a new album.

I don't agree that ABBA should return to the early 1980s period for 'filler' for a new album to accompany the 2 new songs. Artistically, it wouldn't make sense. If those songs didn't fit on an album nearly 40 years ago, why would they now?
There seem to be a lot of fans who are saying 'Forget the avatars and just give us the new songs.' The whole reason for the songs is to tie-in to the project, though. If the project is taking longer than originally expected to perfect, we just have to accept it. I'm happy just to know that something new will come along in due course.

If those songs didn't fit on an album nearly 40 years ago, why would they now? Agreed. Plus “Opus 10” was a ridiculous name as it would only have been a ninth album, not a tenth. Even more ridiculous is when fans try to cobble together such an album, and invariably include solo songs from the 80s by Agnetha and Frida that they had a hand in writing. Even given the ABBA treatment, they would never be ABBA songs. Oh, and throw in Every Good Man as well. And don’t forget Just Like That. No, I wouldn’t want to see these two new songs included with any of those. If this Tars thing is going to offer some different arrangements of other ABBA songs then great (even if it’s the same vocals) but otherwise not interested in buying the same songs over again.

I have noticed some fans are very negativ about the Project of the Abbatars. When Benny proposed that it could be new arrangements of the songs I can imagine for example a song like When all is said and done, wich has never been made live could me made with new vocals by Frida in a stripped down version. Probably they want put on new vocals on the old songs but this makes me more positive to what could come out of this Project. More stripped down versions even if the vocals are the original ones. And probably the new songs could fit in with this on an album. Songs i would like to hear in newer versions are WAISAD, One of us, Our last summer, The day Before you came, My love my Life, Money Money Money,

I'm not sure that any vocals will be re-recorded for the Avatar project, but there will be live music. That in itself should be quite entertaining in my view.

All I know is that an awful lot of ABBA Fans on You Tube, don't know about the 'New Songs delayed until 2020' News. They still think that they are being released in November, of this Year. I've been 'Up-Dating' those Fans, with regular 'Comments', there. However, I don't use my real name! I'm well aware, that if I keep giving more 'Delayed', News there, eventually those You Tube Fans could somehow get angry at me and start saying unpleasant things. Sort of a 'Shoot the Messenger' type situation! As well, as my regular 'Delayed Again' Up-Dates, making some of them think that I'm a Lunatic! (I've not even told my 6 UK Charts Company 'Contacts', about the 2020 'Delays'. The OCC still think that the New Songs are coming out in November of this Year. I've decided to not bother to correct them, as they too may think that I'm 'Insane', by now. The many 'Delay Dates', make it sound like ABBA are now totally 'aimless'...).

I really do hope they see sense and scrap the "ABBAtars" project as I don't really want to hear different versions of ABBA tracks and also, a set song list to accompany the "ABBAtars" tour ( should it go ahead ) as we already have with "ABBA Live In Concert". I would welcome a brand new ABBA album with completely new songs including the two we haven't heard yet. However, I still remain sceptical.

^^ We wouldn’t be talking Matt Pop-type mixes though. If Benny and Björn were involved, it could be termed as “official”. Plus if the original vocals were retained (even if some of the rest of it was stripped away and replaced), it could be an interesting new way of hearing some of those songs. It’s got to be better than Mamma Mia! versions, surely? If we can stomach those then surely ones with ABBA vocals would be welcome, even if they’d never replace the originals.
Björn was interviewed on Radio 2’s Graham Norton show today. I only heard some of it - a Q and A from fans - but did he mention anything about the ‘Tars or the new songs? I might try and catch it on the Sounds app.

Björn spoke a little about the avatars. He has seen 85% of the final result and they are not physical things, they just exist on a website 'in the cloud' at the moment. He said the other 3 had asked him not to speculate too much on release dates...

I Think it could be really nice to hear stripped down versions, for example The day Before you came with only Benny on piano instead of syntheziser and Agnethas voice and of course Fridas hautning background vocals and operatic melody. That could also probably update the sound from sounding dated and to overworked.

I've just listened to a recording of Bjorn's BBC Radio 2 Interview, with Graham Norton. (From this morning - Saturday 14th September).
I kept stopping the recording to make Notes.
Here is what I've written.
1)... Graham Norton asked Bjorn, if he's seen his ABBAtar. He said that he's seen the 85% of it that is finished. It is how he looked in 1979.
2)... Asked about the 2 New Songs, Bjorn said that 'I Still Have Faith in You' was 'Timeless' and a 'Ballad'. The 2nd Song is 'Almost Disco' and '70's sounding', and that is 'Don't Shut Me Down'. 3)... Graham said that it is a long time since ABBA first announced that they'd recorded them. That they are now 'Old' Songs. Bjorn said that he'd told the World about them too soon. He called them 'Unheard Songs'. That we'll get them: 'Next Year'.
4)... Bjorn was asked if ABBA 'Kept going', (recording New Songs), after they recorded the 2, in June 2017. Was there going to be a New ABBA Album?
Bjorn said: 'I don't think so. You never know. There could be a few others. We'll see. We had fun'.
5)... He was asked if ABBA were re-recording any 'Old' ABBA Songs, for The ABBAtars to 'Sing'. Bjorn said 'No'.
6)... Graham asked if The ABBAtars are to Tour. Bjorn said 'No'. They will be in one place. ABBA Fans will have to travel to see them.
Bjorn said that the other Members of ABBA had asked him not to reveal 'too much' about The ABBAtars plans.
7)... Graham asked if ABBA were tempted to do a Concert. Bjorn said that none of ABBA want to do that. He said that even 1 Night, (of a Concert), takes a lot of energy. ABBA just have no desire to perform. It will not happen. Graham said that Fans would not mind if ABBA did a Concert sitting down. Bjorn was not interested...
8)... Graham said that he thinks that ABBA will see The ABBAtars performing, getting 'A lot of love' from Audiences, and they will get the desire back to go back on Stage themselves. Bjorn said that it will not happen.
9)... He was asked when the NBC/BBC Global ABBA TV Special was to be shown. Bjorn said that it is probably not going to be made. That ABBA were still deciding how they would 'Launch' The ABBAtars. (The 'Launch' was originally going to be via that TV Special. That was due to be Broadcast on Tuesday 18th December 2018. Now, it will never be made).

^^ For “the others” I would read “Benny”. I doubt Agnetha and Frida have much of an opinion, or are even allowed one. Benny calls the shots and Björn is the spokesperson.
“There could be a few others [songs]” - so more teasing then. So much of what Graham asked got a flat “no” that it’s worth reading into this. After Benny’s recent rebuff, surely Björn wouldn’t incur his wrath by further speculation of more songs (if not a full album). If this is just teasing, then further shame on Björn. He should have just stopped at “I don’t think so, but we had fun”.

If I were to speculate wildly on the basis of no facts whatsoever, I'd interpret it as follows: B&B are quite keen to do a bit more writing (and in all likelihood had a few surplus ideas/snippets from their ISHFIY and DSMD songwriting sessions which could be developed further - or indeed they could even conceivably have an extra song or two up their sleeves that is/are pretty much complete) but are waiting to see what sort of reception ISHFIY and DSMD get (whenever that is) before taking them further/admitting to their existence/sitting down and writing even more new stuff. Unless the new songs 'bomb', and assuming the quartet's health holds up, I reckon we can justifiably hold out a bit of hope that even more 'product' could follow after ISHFIY and DSMD finally see the light of day.
