To bennybjorn and onlyabba4me, I had already mentioned as far back as the end of September that I had watched Bjorn's interview on " News At Ten " and I had surmised that the band had been in the studio recently and that Agnetha, Frida and Benny asked Bjorn not to reveal the reason why they had spent time in the studio. The presenter sort of persuaded him to answer her directly in respect of forthcoming new music from ABBA so whether he hinted or said anything makes no difference. Regarding the two "new" songs, I was the one who initially confirmed that the songs were old in a previous post of mine. I do wish people would get their facts right and not twist comments around to their advantage to gain the upper hand.

The word " hint " can interpret so many different meanings. I don't think we have had official confirmation as to what is going on with the release of the " new songs " and possible others. No actual date and very lacklustre detail-wise. And as I previously commented during an earlier post of mine that both ISHFIY and DSMD are now technically not new before others pipped me to the post. ( January 20 at 6.37 pm. ) I think some of you guys, bennybjorn and onlyabba4me derive pleasure from ganging up on me. Dude - take a chill pill. I hardly ever post here and I haven't got a flipping clue who you are. Just pointing out that the group did in fact get together in a studio in the autumn. That's all.

Onlyabba4me - yes, I know there must be more than 2 songs by now.
Jude Kelly said she understood there were 5 songs when she opened the Super Troupers exhibition on press day, so she must have got that from somewhere.

As bennybjorn says, Bjorn did not 'hint' that ABBA had been recording in 2019, he clearly said that they had been. That, (or those), 2019 recording session(s), were, (obviously), nothing to do with the 2 'New' Songs, that ABBA recorded in June 2017. So, there will definitely be more than 2 Songs. Gazman -- We may or may not get a New ABBA Album, but ABBA are certainly going to give us more than just 2 Songs. Why else would they need to go into the Recording Studio, in 2019, when the 2 'New' Songs were recorded in June 2017? How much extra recording work could the 2017 Songs need? Call what Björn did "hint" or "say" but I would be more careful with words "definitely" and "certainly". There's no evidence whatsoever that they really worked on any new songs. It was said several times that the two songs recorded in 2017 are not finished yet. So the studio work could have actually been overdubbing or mixing the two songs that were already announced. So the rumours of four, five or more songs or even a new album are still just that - rumours. And more or less just a wishful thinking on our part (me included - I still keep my fingers crossed for a full album). It may still turn out that we won't get any new material at all and I Still Have Faith In You and Don't Shut Me Down will remain in the vaults. It would not be the first time it happened… Of course I hope we will finally get them but I would not be so much surprised if Benny suddenly changed his mind and vetoed the release.

I wonder how long it will take for fan speculation to become solid rumours that ABBA definitely recorded an entire album, to morph further into an urban legend that the album was definitely recorded but its release was stymied by someone or something, and then to translate into endless online campaigns for its release, despite denials of its existence by any given member of ABBA? Remember how long people were convinced that ABBA had recorded four new songs in 1989? Titles mentioned were It's been swell, I just wasn't thinking, and Something on my mind (I can't remember the fourth title).
We run the risk of torturing ourselves!

'RUMOURS' -- To be honest, it is not just 'The Fans' who spread rumours about ABBA's 'New' Songs and a 'New Album'. Benny & Bjorn have added much energy to the 'Rumours', in various Interviews, since April 2018. Indeed, both of them were going on about a: 'Possible third new song', in August 2018. Agnetha and Frida have - wisely - stayed out of all of it, and we never hear what they think of it all.
I have seen almost universal disinterest, in The ABBAtars, wherever ABBA Fans chat on The Internet. Some Fans are even very hostile about them. Other Fans are totally bored by the 'ABBAtar Plans'. Like me, many ABBA Fans are only interested in the 'New' Music. We could care less about The ABBAtars. We just have to wait and see if The ABBAtars go ahead. 'They' may surprise us all and actually be very worthwhile. I do look forward to seeing ABBA Promo Videos, with The ABBAtars 'starring' in them...

Tony ( Hometime ), regarding the songs that you mentioned could possibly have been recorded by ABBA ( back in 1989 ). Please correct me if I am wrong but I think the title of the fourth was " Darling, It's You " but I'm not sure as I am only speculating.

I can imagine an advert for the avatar show exclaiming "ABBA ARE BACK!", with the old hits playing in the background. No doubt the two 'new' songs, or more, would also get mentioned as further enticement. But if not, I don't think their absence from the advertising or the show itself would put off people from going to the show anyway.
And that's why I feel that there isn't a really convincing reason why the two songs, or more, should be held back - definitely not because releasing them earlier would be commercially detrimental to the avatar show. Just the opposite perhaps? Rather, an aid to it? But I realise, thanks to gazman's explanation, that that isn't the way 'they" must be thinking, unfortunately. And so the wait goes on.

Absolutely spot on, Richard. I'm betting that they are simply holding off because they want the video(s) to be performed by the ABBAtars and the technology keeps going rogue. Nobody will buy tickets for this tour on the strength of two new songs: this cash cow will be fed with weapons-grade nostalgia. If they were smart, they'd haul themselves into hair and make-up for a video featuring themselves. Add two new hits to the canon and then launch the tour when it's ready.

HOMETIME -- ABBA have made it clear, that they have no intentions of being seen performing the 'New', (or 'Old), ABBA Songs. Bjorn has said it. Benny has said it. That is why it will be The ABBAtars, 'who' will be seen on Stage, and not ABBA. Also, even The ABBAtars will not be 'On Tour'. Bjorn has revealed that The ABBAtars 'Show' is not going to to Tour at all. 'They' will be 'performing' at a static Venue. ABBA Fans will have to travel there, if they wish to see The ABBAtars. That is if The ABBAtars 'Show' ever gets started. Whatever happens with the 'Show', we will certainly see The ABBAtars in Promo Videos, for the 'New' Songs - however many we, (finally), get...
The 'Real' ABBA will probably have no objections about promoting The ABBAtars - and 'New' Songs, (or Album) - by going on TV and Radio, and in the Press & Magazines etc. They just don't want to perform any more, that's all...

Yes, Colin, I'm aware of all that. I was merely expressing what, in my personal view (and perhaps that wasn't explicit enough?) I would suggest as a solution to the impasse. I harbour no notions that I might ever persuade any member of ABBA to do anything they don't want to.

I'm still hoping for a 'Big Budget' ABBA Biopic Film. 'Bohemian Rhapsody' gave a huge boost to Queen, all over the World. So much so, the the Soundtrack, not only became their 1st Album to reach 30 Weeks, in the UK Top 10, but it managed 45 Top 10 Weeks, in the end. Oddly, it never quite reached No.1 - No.3, for 5 Weeks. The Film took far more cash than the 2 'Mamma Mia!' Films - $903 Million, compared to $615 Million for 'MM!1' and $395 Million for 'MM!2'. I do hope that ABBA change their minds and allow an ABBA Film to be made. The Bee Gees have theirs coming out this Year. Of course, as Barry is the only Gibb Brother still alive, it was only he who needed to agree to theirs...

I like that, Tony, in particular about 'weapons-grade nostalgia'. That sums it all up for me. I now realise (it took me a long time) that, especially because of the delays, abandoning the link-up between the avatar show and the new songs, would actually be a good thing to do, commercially: get the new material out there and let it also serve as an attraction to the avatar show when it's ready.
Colin, those are impressive takings for the Queen biopic compared the two Mama Mia films. But doesn't entertainment more than accuracy matter most in such biopics? But I admit I haven't seen the Queen film.

I do wish that people would stop saying 'ABBA are being unfair to terminally-ill fans' and such, in conjunction with the new ABBA songs.
I can assure you that most in that situation, needing to get their financial situations in order and to say good-bye to their families in whatever limited time they have left, are not so likely to be thinking very much about pop music releases.

Well, they haven't made it any easier on themselves with all these delays. It has raised anticipation and expectations even more. If the new songs are anything less than spectacular (a new Dancing Queen or The Winner Takes It All) the media are going to have a field day. I can only imagine the headlines: 'is this what took them 35 years to come up with' (and another 3 plus years to release).
As much as I am excited about the new songs and to hear Frida and Agnetha sing together again, they are taking a huge risk here. How can they possibly live up to the expectations. Recapturing the magic that was in those recordings from the seventies and eighties is quite a task to accomplish.

Maybe they won't be trying to recapture the magic. Perhaps it will have elements from the past (vocal harmonies) but with some new twist.
I guess we'll find out soon enough.

One point of interest will be hearing to what degree, and how well, any 'trademark' ABBA elements have been combined with/offset against newer, 'contemporary' elements. I get the impression that Bjorn especially will have had a bee in his bonnet about these things sounding up-to-date and of-the-moment rather than 'safe' retro hark-backs, but considering how some older ABBA tracks now sound less tied to their era than many of the later synthy ones, you'd like to think they'd be aiming to build-in some sort of long-term, 'timeless' (a problematic term, but I'll lazily sling it in, here) qualities, to the degree that that's possible/knowable.

Bjorn has called one of the June 2017 'New' ABBA Songs: 'Timeless'. The one, that he was referring to, is 'I Still Have Faith In You'. That one is about ABBA themselves. The other one - 'Don't Shut Me Down' - is said to be: 'Like a 1970's Pop Song'. That one is more up-tempo.
Benny has said that the 'New' Songs, (however many we get), sound like ABBA, but they will feature 'Modern' Instruments. The Music in them, can't be totally made by 'Modern' Instruments, as Benny & Bjorn mentioned 'An Orchestra', being added, to at least one of the Songs. Fans should not be worried or puzzled, at the idea of ABBA combining 'Modern' and Orchestral instruments. I like to find old Italian and French Pop Songs, on You Tube. I've found many good ones from the 1960's. In many cases, the Hits contain a Guitar Band, with a Pop style and there is an Orchestra too. It all works, and I've found many very catchy Italian and French Hits, from the 1960's. They were not heard in the 'English Speaking World', but they are just as good as the Big Hits, that were reaching the UK & USA etc. Top 10's, in the 1960's. You see both the backing Guitar Groups, and the Orchestras, in the Videos of the Songs.
Therefore, it would be very interesting, if ABBA also combined Pop Music and Orchestral Music, on some, (or all), of their 'New' Songs. It really does not sound terrible at all. I now have some of my favourite Old Hits, of 'All Time', that are sung in Italian & French - as well as Spanish. I always try to find interesting Old Hits, that are New to me. People, who only listen to English Language Pop Hits, miss out on many terrific Songs and fantastic Male & Female Singers.
So, let us see what ABBA come up with. I think that their Synth driven Tracks, from 1981 and 1982, have 'Dated' far more than their previous Songs, So, I do hope that ABBA's 'New' Songs, don't turn out, to have 'bare minimum' backing Music, which is just dominated by Synths. That would make them sound far less strong and interesting, in my view...(Like they belong in the 1980's).
Hopefully, the 'New' Songs will have very strong and attractive Intros. They were always a big feature, of many ABBA Hits, as they sort of 'pull' the listener into the Songs...

As far as I'm concerned, they should take the opportunity to record their own version of 'Story of a Heart', while they're at it! It is, for all intents and purposes, an ABBA song (whatever grumpy old Benny has to say about it). Imagine it with non-clunky drums (sorry, Steps) and moderate, 'timeless' synth backing! It would become a well-deserved global smash hit!

^That's a nice thought, but a step backwards. ABBA shouldn't really record what would essentially be a cover of someone else's songs (even if BennyBjörn wrote it).
I've always liked Another You, Another Me. It IRKS me beyond belief that the two muppets from Steps recorded it. 😈

Jensj2 - I very much doubt, if ABBA will have recorded, any of the Old Benny & Bjorn Tracks, that were given to others. So, there will be no ABBA verson of 'Story Of A Heart'. In 2009, that Benny Andersson Band Track was not a big UK Hit - No.83. It got more Air Play - No.15, in the UK Air Play Chart. Nor will we ever get to hear an ABBA version of 'I Know Him So Well'. Nor of H & Claire's Benny & Bjorn Song - 'Another Me, Another You'. That Track was just left on the 'Another Me, Another You' Album, (2002). That Album wasn't big - No.58. ABBA could 'Fast Track', a New Album, by recording those Songs. Plus Frida's 'Slowly' - Benny & Bjorn Song. As well as doing up-dated versions of: 'Just Like That' and 'Just A Notion'. They'd only have to add 5 New Songs, to have a 10 Track Album. However, I doubt very much, if ABBA will be adding those 5 Old Songs, to any New Album. If we get a New Album, it wll be around 10 New ABBA Songs, with nothing - at all - added from the Past...

[...] In the meantime, 'ABBA Gold' is doing very well on iTunes again. It is currently No.4, (Holding), on Global iTunes and No.3, (up from No.5), on European iTunes Sorry man, and I'll ask as nicely as I can, but can stuff about chart positions and sales figures be confined to the specialist thread(s)? I know that you're riveted by this stuff, but some of us find it stultifying, and it would surely be best for those of both persuasions if the dry facts and figures pertaining to unit-shifting were kept penned-in in their own area, where they can be easily located and enjoyed, or avoided like the coronavirus, as the case may be (this is ABBAchat, not ABBAchart!).

I've tried to keep the UK Charts Company up-to-date, with everything that Benny or Bjorn say, regarding any 'New' ABBA Songs. This is because they have done at least 2 Articles, in the past, about it all. However, they seem to have lost interest - for now - as they've totally ignored all up-dates, since last September. I think that they no longer take anything, that Benny & Bjorn say, seriously. So, they have gone from calling the 'New' Songs: 'The Biggest Comeback In Pop History', to totally ignoring it all. They will pay attention, again, when ABBA actually release something, but they are now at the: 'We'll believe it, when we see it', stage...
I think that this Thread is - by far - the busiest and most viewed Thread, that ABBA Chat has ever had. It shows the gigantic interest, that there is - by Fans - in the fact that ABBA have Recorded, after all of these Decades. When the 'New' Songs are released, we have to decide if we 'Review' them in this Thread, or in a brand New Thread. Or, if we discuss them in this Thread and a brand New Thread. I'm not going to do my 'Reviews' right away, as I want to listen to the 'New' Songs several times, before I do so. Believe it or not, in 1980, I did not like 'The Winner Takes It All', at first. It took me about 3 Weeks, to 'get into' into it. So, it is sometimes best not to 'Review' ABBA Songs, until you've listened to them, several times. Like all Fans, I'm hoping that I like the 'New' Songs as soon as I hear them...
I hope that as many ABBA Chat Members, as possible, will take the time to Post 'Reviews', of the 'New' Songs. I know that a lot of Members seem to be, very nervous about Posting, but they should not be afraid to express themselves. I like to come here - very often - to read all of the New, interesting, and friendly Posts. I'd love to see ABBA Chat Members, giving full 'Reviews', of ABBA's 'New' Songs. We could even have a Poll - to find out which 'New' Songs are the most popular. It would be fascinating, to see the results of that...

Onlyabba4me, I really do hope the new songs will make a huge impact on all of us fans when we finally hear them. I must admit that I liked many ABBA songs when I first heard them. Every ABBA song is different from the last to the next. I may not like " Super Trouper " or " Money Money Money " nowadays but they are still solid pop songs. I wouldn't like to award any ABBA song nil points whether or not it is a favourite of mine because they will always remain timeless. Reviewing ABBA songs isn't one of my strongest points and I worry I may use the same word time and time again. But I would like to have a go at some stage. I agree it would be interesting to hear comments from other fans regarding the " new songs " and I do love polls etc. What about comparing the " new " material with all of the songs we have listened to so many times.

I wrote here Before that I Think it would be a nice idea that they could do new and more live versions or stripped down versions of WAISAD, OLS, TDBYC, OOU, TV and MLML. These does not exist in live versions so they cant use them with the avatars unless they make new versions. Also B or B have expressed with some of these songs that they are not to happy with the original versions. Also I wonder how they can have a concert with the Avatars not playing TWTIA so if we could have a live version of that one it would be heaven. Probably ABBA would use modern technique to make it sound live even if it is made in the studio. But what I like the most with this idea is to hear more adult versions like this one with WAISAD

I'm hoping to like the 'New' Songs, from the very first time, that I hear them. I've noticed that a lot of ABBA Fans don't seem to like 'Chiquitita', 'I Have A Dream' and 'Super Trouper' very much, these days. I've seen a lot of negative comments about them. Of the 3, it was 'I Have A Dream' that I was not very keen on, when it was a Single. I suspect that 'I Still Have Faith In you' will be at the speed of 'The Winner Takes It All' and 'Don't Shut Me Down will be at the speed of 'Take A Chance On Me'. Not to forget, that the Hit from 1980, was not at a 'slow' pace throughout. It sped up, towards the end...

Stepalm, I completely agree with you. It would be interesting to hear different versions of all the songs that were never replicated live in concert. I am very disappointed in that respect. I hope we do not receive a live performance of " The ABBAtars " featuring the same tracklist as on " ABBA Live " on CD with the " new songs " thrown in. In that case, I will not be buying the CD whichever format is available. A new album from ABBA is a far more appealing prospect rather than hearing the same songs performed live. With the exception of TWOFD, I was never too keen on the live ABBA performances because I much prefer the studio versions. All songs are difficult to replicate live. Thank you for your post.
