I hope you’re right, HOMETIME. I checked it out further though and the ABBATalk member who spoke to Görel Hanser is apparently a trusted source, doesn’t have a Polish name and it wasn’t doubted that he was telling the truth. The comment I posted about it being fake news was from YouTube. Assuming the original source was genuine, could it be they’ve slowed the track down a bit so that Agnetha sounds that bit lower? Might be a case of the other person believing what they want to and therefore dismissing anyone that says otherwise. I can understand that people want to hear new vocals.

What I don't get is . Adele is 33. Yet radio one play her. Thought she would not be their target audience as she approaches middle age. It's the age of the artists' fans that's the issue. They will happily play singers/groups who are well into their 40s (and possibly older) e.g. Coldplay. But lack of Radio 1 airplay isn't a problem. Radio 2 has a bigger audience (biggest in Europe) and they A-listed both the recent Abba songs and will doubtless do the same for the new one. The challenge for Abba is getting all the commercial stations who play their old stuff almost constantly to actually play the new songs, too. That's what hasn't happened.

The YouTube person has given this as a source, though it’s in Swedish. Apparently confirmation of it being new vocals: ABBA:s nya, så blev den till - Radio Tyresö - Tyresöradion www.tyresoradion.se/3565So many conflicting reports, this detective work is quite tiring!

Hopefully some of our lovely Swedish speakers can tell us what that says, and end the speculation once and for all.
It would astonish me if they had gone to the trouble of taking vocals from a 1978 multitrack, cleaned them up and built a new track around them. It would make NO sense, given have two tracks that show these women's voices are in stellar shape. There would have to have been some bizarre point-making reason behind such a labour. I would have thought they'd be more likely to abandon the track and record something new than put themselves to that kind of trouble. Whoever thought it was big or clever to start such a ludicrous rumour needs a clip 'round the ear!

OK, so the YouTube person quotes one thing that Bernard said:
Agnetha and Anni-Frid on two of the songs sound like they did in the 1970s, and could hardly hear any difference. On the rest of the album they do sing a half tone or tone lower than in the 1970s or 80s.
Therefore no specific reference to Just A Notion, the person is just assuming Bernard means that one as one of the two. It could, however, be part of a ploy to cover up the fact they used the original vocals.
Edit: their parting comment is “you will find out (the truth) when the CD arrives. The info is there…” Presumably yet another person with insider knowledge that has the CD already. However, a recording date on that could just be referring to the backing track. I’m leaving it there, I don’t do social media arguments!

Whoever thought it was big or clever to start such a ludicrous rumour needs a clip 'round the ear! Whatever anyone thinks of ABBATalk (and I had my own run-in with it years ago thanks to a discussion on a previous forum that got some of us swiftly removed from that group!), it does have credibility. Carl Magnus Palm, for instance, seems to be well in with them. If they had an untrustworthy source on there, they’d soon flush them out. It can’t be that difficult to email Görel Hanser, and to get a quick response. I don’t know what to believe to be honest. We’re in a world where people believe what they want to!

Having listened to this 1978/2021 "mash-up" I'm more convinced than ever that it's an entirely new recording with new vocals. Unless ABBA themselves confirm/deny it, I think this will be the debate that lives on for eternity: old vs. new vocals. Based on the 2 new tracks released in September, the vocals on JAN to me are clearly from an earlier time. While I love Agnetha's vocals on the 2 new tracks, you can clearly hear the patina of age in her voice - a slight rasp, a slight wobbliness here and there, etc. But most telling is the fact that Agnetha does not do any belt singing. Even during the big choruses of ISHFIY, Agnetha seems to be singing falsetto or passagio. On DSMD, even her most strident line "I'm fired up, I'm hot, don't shut me down!" sounds very soft. By contrast, JAN is classic Agnetha using all parts of her crystalline voice, including her powerful belt singing. I'm not saying that 2017-2021 Agentha is incapable of singing like this, but based on what we've heard so far, I would say it's highly improbable.

I guess we'll just have to take a deep breath and just enjoy the music, whatever its genesis. If the single drops at midnight in every country, we might start hearing (about) it from early afternoon, given the timezones of countries like Australia, Japan etc.? Not gonna lie, @alan, I'm disappointed that your Moderator's tool kit doesn't include a batphone with Gorel on speed-dial. What is the world coming to?!

The box is the most desirable aspect of that, at first glance. I've given up trying to figure out how much it'd cost alone - say $14 for the CD and $30 for the shirt... So about $16 for a cardboard box? In all, it looks like something you might buy as a Christmas present for the ABBA fan in your life. I wonder what's the logic behind making it a US exclusive?

In my opinion, the US box isn't as nice as the one for the Deluxe CD boxset. Talking of which, I'm not sure why they've included stickers in that - they are hardly a selling point (except perhaps for kids) and who would actually use those stickers rather than keep their boxset intact?
What we could do with is a big box to keep all those vinyl editions in, as well as the CDs and cassettes (if applicable). They missed a trick there.

This has just been put out from the official ABBA Facebook account...
"The fans have spoken! After many requests, ABBA will officially release the single 'Just A Notion' at midnight local time."
I really think that the marketing people are confusing "Just A Notion" with "Just Like That" in terms of fan demand.

At least marketing wise they have got it right this time and not releasing on a Thursday like the last two... So it has every chance to chart ...with full week sales....

Anyone else in UK/Ireland/Europe planning to stay up until midnight today to listen to 'Just A Notion' on streaming or download?
I don't get home from work until 11pm so it's the perfect opportunity for me to enjoy it when it becomes available...

Yes Gazman - it is a unique event ( as I live in Ireland the first two songs were released at a perfect time) so I plan to be waiting to call on spotify at midnight !! Will play JAN many times in the hope that it helps it charts here.

Me too, gazman and breifne: I'll be having a prebedtime bop in the kitchen. Knowing me, the tune will probably get between me and sleep. But it's nice to have something new from ABBA to enjoy. It's like being a teenager again.

But I'd also mention Frida. Like you I still like the two new songs heard so far - and looking forward to Just A Notion very much - but surely after 40 years none of us could have expected the ABBA of old, especially Agnetha and Frida's vocals. Again, though I like DSMD very much, the chorus, to my ears, doesn't have the zip and zap of Agnetha and Frida's previous combined vocals. It's softer, as you say.

JAN sound like WDIHTBM plus Waterloo and a BAO style.
Don't like too much, prefer the "impossible mixing" version 😛😛

Alas Ill be waiting until the morning and no doubt looking at You Tube...I've no Spotify or that ilk... Then Ill be waiting to hear it on Radio 2 (UK).. and hoping that its record of the week next week.....Ken Bruce is usually a great fan, so will play....
I have a good feeling JAN may surprise us and do fairly well.... another top 10 ? depends I guess on physical sales.........
As an aside... in 2016 Ken Bruce set a Guinness Book world record on ABBA intros..
At the Mermaid Theatre in London, UK, presenter Ken Bruce (UK) and acclaimed pianist Robert Wells (Sweden) successfully achieved the title for Most ABBA songs played and recognised in one minute, naming an impressive total of 13 tunes by the Swedish pop legends.
Separated for the duration of the attempt and under the watchful gaze of official adjudicator Anna Orford, Robert played out the intro to a sucession of ABBA’s 30 best-selling hits while Ken had to correctly identify at least ten to earn the record.

I've just heard it. On repeat. Three times. With headphones. Volume way up loud.
It is LOVELY!!!
Going back to listen again on Spotify.
You might remember I was initially disappointed to learn it was included on the album. Not anymore!
I absolutely love the outro!! Such a fun song!!
Enjoy it, folks!!

It has a fun, honky-tonk intro!
And very high choir vocal in the outro, a counter-melody where they sing "I think it's more than a notion - in a moment the dream is about to come true!!" Beautiful closing lines.
Piano is very prominent right the way through.
I think it's perfect. I couldn't have hoped for a better remix!
