Don't think another Greatest Hits would do well because of Gold. As for the journalists . They seem to be quiet about their lack of sales compared to the seventies, eighties. Is that because the standard of what passes for journalism has got worse? By their own implications it appears so. Less copies sold , must not be as good.

I am a little surprised and shocked " The Telegraph " were rather scathing with their reviews of ISHFIY and DSMD as both are outstanding. To reach No 14 with ISHFIY, No 9 with DSMD and ( this is a revelation ) currently no 4 with JAN which I wasn't expecting is A BIG SUCCESS and NOT A FAILURE. As I probably said before ABBA have such an immensely varied back catalogue of songs. Each song is uniquely different. I hope " The Telegraph " are left with egg on their faces once " Voyage " is released. I too, would like a possible compilation of a " Greatest Hits ( Vol 3 ) to be released but probably as Alan has pointed out won't happen because of the enduring success of " ABBA Gold".

My post was referring to lack of sales for their own newspapers. Sales of newspapers have dropped dramatically since the seventies, eighties and nineties. So by the journalists' own logic...less sales means less worth. Newspapers sometimes don't tell the whole story only what they have researched or chose to ignore. Just one wee journalist and possibly not one that likes Abba. Hope they turn their attention to giving bore us with a song,Adel.

To reach No 14 with ISHFIY, No 9 with DSMD and ( this is a revelation ) currently no 4 with JAN Sorry, where are you getting that from, Eddie? Just A Notion is currently number 59, not number 4. The ABBA discography on Wikipedia is currently showing Just A Notion’s highest chart position as number 26. Was this a midweek update figure? It should be corrected to number 59.

Alan, according to The Official Top 100 Singles Chart, ABBA are at No 4 with JAN unless it is a mistake.

I could have easily made the same mistake. I find the charts confusing - there are so many of them and also I don't find the chart site very easy to use in terms of its navigation. And as far as posts go, I haven't noticed your posts being dull but I think people are fed up with my ramblings.

I wouldn't worry about it Eddie. They have made the charts do complicated. Before considering to use streaming as an indication of popularity, they should have endured one stream one device and you have to listen to the whole song. They have distorted the charts and made a mockery of them , devalued them. I am sure that this cannot be good for new acts either. The favouring of some artists over others is not helpful either. Playing their new songs but not others is not an equal playing field. You can't stream it if you don't know it exists. What a mess.

I think too much emfisis is placed on all this chart action anyways. I find the occ UK charts hard to figure out anyways, but one factor holds true as I read through some the posts regarding "charts" it has generated an awful lot of confusion, especially for JAN. Wikipedia has JAN as a peak position of #26. It also indicates ISHFIY at #14 and DSMD at #9. At this point I'm not sure how reliable that is either. Just to add insult to injury, I saw a re-entry for ISHFIY at #45 on the occ chart, not sure how to interpretate that!?

I have only seen the Monday midweek on the OCC site. Where can I see the other midweeks?
What do you realistically think Voyage could sell in week 1?
Personally I think 150k real sales (based on pre orders of 111k). Plus Streaming.
Ed Sheeran's album would have to be really big if in week 2 it sells say 200k.

Probably an impossible question to ask at this stage, but best guess .. As we know the chances of Ed Sheeran being number 1 in the UK album charts is virtually 100%, it also means that up to 3 of his tracks from that album will also be able to chart, They will probably be Bad Habits , Shivers ( already number ones) and Overpass Graffiti a track from the album and could be Number 1 this Friday.... So the question is.. whats the chances of the 3 new Abba singles charting again ? (guessing this time they will predominately be streaming/downloads...) Obviously it also means any of the unknown 7 tracks could also chart... or is this improbable ?

Only 3 can chart from any artist at anytime. And if one is dropping down the charts I think it's replaced with the next most popular from the album. Not sure who is the most popular between Ed and Adele. No contest for me. Ed hands down. Think he may have a younger fan base and more streamers. Also trendier. I find his songs catchy. Adel seems to be catering for an older market making an album all about divorce. And although I'm older she leaves me cold. Be interesting to see who sells more eventually. Abba will of course sell well and for a band who split 40 years ago that's not bad going. I just wish Benny had said that it was their final album at the time of the live stream to deny journalists the opportunity of trying to link the decision to the singles performing not as well as in the pre streaming days. I think Universal should have kept their eye on the competition too and delayed the release to February of next year to avoid Adel and Ed hogging the limelight. Having waited 40 years another few month would not have mattered too much.

All this talk of charts or what the right-wing press are saying. Does any of it really matter? This is a huge one-off event that’s happening this Friday and we’re into our last few days of anticipation. Enjoy it. It wouldn’t spoil my enjoyment if all of the media hated it or the album failed to make the top 100.
I read the Telegraph article to see what was being discussed, but I’m not wasting a second of my life bothering with what the Mail has to say.
There’s a new ABBA album on Friday, the first in 40 years. The rest is irrelevant in comparison. Let’s not spoil it for ourselves (or others).

I guess as true artists very comfortable with their style and talent, ABBA was just concerned with putting out work which they believe was their best at that particular time given their physical and technical limitations and current world situation at hand. They know it was long delayed and it needed to be released. i don't think they were consciously aiming for a number 1 hit single or album. they may have been informed about ed Sheeran and Adele but they probably didn't care. I'm sure making a number 1 hit would make them happy but it was not their main concern. Their concern as any commercial artist should be concerned about is will it sell and make money? And that's a fair concern for anyone trying to sell themselves or their work in whatever profession.

Yeah. We should just concentrate on the album and it's contents. Chart positions are irrelevant. 100 years from now, today's artists and what went before will probably have been forgotten about...you rarely hear songs from the sixties on the radio these days. I would say that I hear more Abba than Beatles whether it be in shops radio or on TV and even on soaps in the background. And even better a new album. Happy days. And a Christmas song to play over Christmas. That will be special. It's really strange , along with family and friends ,Abba has been a constant in my life for 43 years. The only other artist that came close to them for me is Madonna but not for as long as Abba. It was a dream come true when she brought out Hung up. And now another dream is about to come true...ahah

I totally agree. No Voyage related topic should be out of limits - this is a General Discussion
When Alan revealed info on some of the tracks one or two people complained. I defended him.
Now it is him saying what should not be talked about ie the charts.
Carry on talking about the charts or 'leaks'.
By the way, if Voyage was released in September or held back til Abbatars we wouldn't be talking about the charts so much.
It is only because ABBA are sandwiched between Ed Sheeran and Adele there's a lot of talk about getting to #1. From Friday peoole will be talking more about the actual songs.

The intro to JAN is no different from many other dance band type songs. Its a bog standard boogie piano bass line. The Womble song was derived from earlier stuff as well. So what ? I like JAN. It may not be their best song, but its not their worst either. Moaning about the intro is like moaning about a theme from classical music because it later got used in an advert you didn't like !

Just to add, folks, I post on a few forums and the level of criticism here is no different to elsewhere! I think when people have invested a huge amount of their time in a group there will always be a lot of emotion involved, positive and negative, when new songs are released. Let's just enjoy this run-up period to a brand new Abba album. Most of us thought it would never happen, and there's a strong chance this will be the last time (although I'm still secretly hoping it might not be!). Just four days to go!

Most of us thought it would never happen, and there's a strong chance this will be the last time (although I'm still secretly hoping it might not be!). Just four days to go! Totally agree. I'm on other discussion forums where the acts get criticised quite fiercely. And that is a much healthier form of fandom than breathless, blinkered idolatry and tribalism. Equally, there are members of those forums who just rub others (not everyone, just some!) up the wrong way. Finding a way to avoid their particular brand of commentary is often wise so as to minimise conflict. When the pool of active users is small (as in here), the impact of those members can be a bit stronger. I fully intend to say what I like and dislike about Voyage and the stuff in its orbit. I just hope I do it in a way that accepts the equally valid opinions of others. As of now, I like what I've heard. It's not a rock solid love - the first two songs took me a little while to get into and I have misgivings about some production choices. But I also have some of the same misgivings about the earlier albums - including my favourite, The Visitors.
For the first time since I was 17, I'm going to bask in the lovely anticipation of a new ABBA album. I have just four days of that left and I don't intend to let anyone dull the experience. I'll criticise the album when I've heard it, not beforehand. I'll stream and enjoy the joyous (but flawed) bounce of JAN. Roll on midnight on Thursday!

I'm a live let live person as long as we don't hurt anyone including mentally. That said we have a choice to participate or not and yes question some different points of view to our own, its being human, and its good to have conflicting views, and we don't have to love everything, that in this case ABBA put out.. I certainly dont ...
I'm the same as Hometime, alas I was 20 !! since The Visitors.. lol , so.. I'm going to enjoy this run in and make up my own mind on all that is to come...
ps.. I'm a bit of a chart person, not obsessed, especially now, but as they exist, I like to see Abba do well... but I dont take any offence to no replies,I don't usually read the musical in depth break downs, so we all have different interests... that's the beauty of this thread its like a friends discussion...

I hope I’ve not been misunderstood… I wasn’t saying don’t discuss charts or the press etc and I certainly wasn’t trying to dictate what can and can’t be talked about, but it just seemed like it was becoming more important than it needed to be. Why should we care what the Telegraph and Mail say? Does Just A Notion’s chart position affect anyone’s enjoyment (or dislike) of it?
And by the way, my post was my opinion expressed as a member equal to everyone else on here. I can’t ever imagine posting as a moderator so if anyone took it as that, please be assured I wasn’t!
I apologise to anyone that was annoyed/angered/upset with my post. It wasn’t the intention.

The evolution of the charts since ABBA last released new material is... interesting. The labels found a way of structuring things so that singles regularly entered at Number 1 (that used to be such a rarity) and for a good chunk of the 90s and 00s, it seemed to freeze out a number of acts. In its purest form, streaming should create the most democratic charts but the editorial playlists all seem to hark back to the tightly controlled radio playlists and even payola. With people consuming music in such different ways to 20 years ago, the charts have changed beyond recognition. Somehow, they've become more youth obsessed than ever. From a singles chart point of view, I think that ABBA have done really, really well. Especially, when you compare their performances to other heritage acts. Even megastars like Madonna are suffering. Obviously, I'd like ABBA to have racked up their 12th Number 1 this week, but I love being able to turn on BBC Radio 2 and be pretty much guaranteed to hear ABBA's latest within the hour. After 40 years of drought, that is incredible! And Alan, I read and re-read your post. You said nothing wrong. On the contrary, you were reasonable and encouraging.

having jumped on the ABBA bandwagon rather "late" there was only one album i had to wait for and that was "the Visitors". So Voyage is just the second ABBA album I have had to wait for with excited enthusiasm. I envy those who witnessed arrival, the album and voulez-vous "in real time". I already like the 3 singles released so far, I hope its not all downhill from there.

Well, it's Monday morning. But it's not just any old Monday morning. It's the Monday morning of a week when a new ABBA album is going to be released. Can't really wrap my head around it. Is it all just some mega-prank, an elaborate Piltdown Man-type hoax? Easy to forget how extraordinary all of this is - and just how long 40 years is. FOR-TY BLOOMIN' YEARS!!! Dynasties and even empires have risen and fallen in less time than that! But somehow it also seems just like yesterday when The Visitors came out. Time's a bit weird, isn't it? (Apologies if I sound a bit like Professor Brian Cox there...). Even though the whole chart position / media coverage thing is of minimal interest to me personally, I actually think it's hugely complimentary to ABBA's status - and to the quality of the new stuff we've already heard - that the issue of how competitive they are and how competitive they can be in a modern music landscape is very much a live one. It's like an old boxer coming out of decades-long retirement, still looking in awesome shape and wowing everyone with the training footage. And I've no doubt that, when Voyage finally enters the ring on Friday, the years will just (rock and) roll away and the king will regain his crown (in my eyes, at least, and those of the other fans for whom ABBA never really went away over the past four decades). Lap it up, everyone! Times like these don't come around too often!!
