I guess it's a hook to promote More ABBA at the BBC? A reminder for fans of magic pop to set aside their Saturday evening?

As it only exists as a ropey home video, I’d hope the audio has been cleaned up a bit for radio broadcast. It’s also a special occasion as it’s the first time this performance has been seen/heard on the BBC since 1974. What’s with the negativity? The story behind this is that, up until about 11 years ago, this performance was indeed lost. It then transpired that someone had got it (the “ropey home video” might actually be accurate). The BBC had long since wiped the tapes (as was the norm for that period - no where to store the tapes and a belief there was no future use for it). The ABBA4Ever forum that some of us were on then were in touch with the person who had the tape, but they wanted money for it. There was then what we’d now call “crowd-funding” to buy it from them. Forum members were asked to contribute and some did. The money was raised and the video then got posted on YouTube for all to see. It’s possible it has been cleaned up a little but ultimately it will be what’s on YouTube as that was the only source available.

Thanks Alan, but I am very well aware of the reason it survives.
The "somebody" who recorded this performance was called Ken Holmes and he was a former BBC employee. Towards the end of his life he was approached by somebody who offered to help convert these tapes into a watchable format. This person then sold all of these rare performances and Ken never saw a penny.
After Ken died, a non-profit group called Kaleidoscope, who specialise in lost TV, stepped in and rescued the tapes. It turned out some of the recordings that had been sold, had been manipulated - edited and their quality worsened. I would suspect this is who the BBC have been in contact with and they will have access to the master tapes, to what Ken originally recorded.
The version we see on Saturday will not be the low-quality version you have linked. Especially as YouTube compresses videos.

Thanks ttbboo66 for filling in the blanks. That’s interesting. However, if you don’t like negativity then this forum might not be for you? Sorry, but I will defend anyone’s right to call out something that isn’t what it’s being hyped-up to be. Whatever they’ve done to it, a “recorded-as-live” TV performance that’s been available to listen to for 11 years is NOT a “long-lost ABBA track”.

This must be the big announcement. If the remixing has a lot of oomph to it then it will be worth a listen or two. Not the track that most fans were hoping for (JLT), but this will give the record company another excuse to churn out a load of new products- coloured vinyl, picture discs etc...

Great that the Dolby Atmos version is being released, but please please please don't let this be the vaunted "big news." I'm too old to cry in public.
EDIT: I've decided to hang on for dear life to the phrase "long lost" - which could not be applied to Waterloo, Dolby Atmos or otherwise. No sobbing for now.

Unless I'm mistaken, the Atmos mix of Waterloo is already on Amazon Music. It has one of the "Oh yeah" background vocals added from the alternate version of the song (after the 1st line of verse 2).

The “huge ABBA announcement” is something else. If it’s this Dolby Atmos version then it’s far from huge. I won’t be tuning in as I’m out, but Gary Davies, you’re great, but please don’t do this to us!

I think it's about Voyage the show going to Las Vegas or someplace else.

I think it's about Voyage the show going to Las Vegas or someplace else. Radio 2 is primarily aimed at a UK audience, so another venue anywhere in the world would not be “huge” when we have one in London. It’s possible it’s that though. I just wish they hadn’t used that word. In comparison to a new album/Voyage show reveal (or even just two songs as per the 2018 announcement), anything would pale into insignificance. The term “huge announcement” should only have come into play if it genuinely is.

As of 0930 ... Gary says it's still a " Huge" reveal... It's not SoLong... his show is going to be full of Abba facts ...
Ps.. Happy Birthday Agnetha....

Gary just mentioned the “huge announcement” again and put quite a lot of emphasis on the word “huge”. Gary, we had an announcement of two new songs six years ago, then one for a full album and the Voyage show three years ago, so this one had better be “huge” enough!
He’s confirmed it’s So Long he’s playing. Boring!

I'm afraid my expectations are lowering as well....
I've looked all over the internet with my limited capabilities and there's nothing.. unless I've missed it.... and I can't see the BBC having sole exclusive reveal.. usually The Sun ( UK newspaper) is on the ball there..lol....
Just been mentioned reveal at 11am.. ish

Something struck me about the insistence on playing the old TOTP performance: will it be a cleaned-up track; might it come from from a bigger, more interesting release like....ooooh, I dunno.... an anthology? Yes, I might just be over-caffeinated. Ultimately, I think this particular item is a hyperactive promo for More ABBA At The BBC tomorrow. I don't think it's that unlikely that Radio 2 might be given an exclusive for a new single, foreverfan. They were big supporters of Voyage and its singles, plus it was Radio 2's Zoe Ball who MC'd the really big reveal in 2021 (albeit on telly). Frida spoke to Zoe at length on Radio 2, as did Agnetha when they supported A+. The station still has power to help influence (parts of) the charts. I think a plugger could do a lot worse than offer them an exclusive on (let's say) a single that wasn't the flagship for a new studio album. Hopefully, the next hour will give us something good to savour beyond an old, quickly re-recorded So Long.

OK, so PopJustice revealed the new album about two days before but I didn’t even trust that totally until we got the live stream on YouTube and heard it from Björn and Benny. It’s for the BBC to reveal it if that’s what Björn and Benny/ ABBA’s people (Görel etc) have decided.

So the Big News is not ye olde So Long, which has now been played (better than I expected) and it was a promo for the TV show.
An hour to go....

So Long just played, and dare I say... pretty good..... Agreed. Way better than I expected. Imagine if the multitrack or original master for that recording were in Polar's vaults? It could be tarted up quite nicely for a proper release. Or did the Beeb retain ownership of those things (and the wipe them)?
