A second ABBA Voyage venue announcement would have been better than that. How on earth can that be considered a huge ABBA announcement?!

It’s starting to seem like this is going to be the worst ever major Waterloo big anniversary year unless they pull something out of the bag.

The vote to find people's favoutite ABBA song? Is THAT the "huge" news?

So what was the big reveal then? Owt or nowt? Radio 2 listeners get to vote for their favourite ever ABBA track or something, like it’s never been done before and can’t be rigged by people voting multiple times for The Day Before You Came (as has happened before). As soon as the Mamma Mia! party lot came on (and stayed far too long), my heart sank but this was far worse than I could ever have imagined.

This has to be the most infuriating pricktease yet. Read the room, Gary/BBC. If ABBA or Universal paid a PR to engineer this, they should demand a refund.

Gary Davies can be found on Twitter at @djgarydavies.
Let's give him a HUGE message.

I dumped twitter a while back, but I replied to the post on Insta. http://instagram.com/p/C5YEtTSol1o To be fair, I reckon this massive overkill is more likely to have came from management rather than Gary himself. It doesn't even constitute news, given that we've known about it for weeks now.

Underwhelmed by this anniversary thing. The video for Thank you for the music (Grel Hanser in a cameo?), the trailer for the new tv special (not 1 single frame I haven't seen before) and so on. When we get an Abbamedley on the eurovision song contest it will reach an all-time low.

I hope that somebody understands that this misfire might undermine some important goodwill? This is what happens when you lock a PR intern in a small room and give them too much Fanta and Skittles.
I'm far more annoyed than this BS warrants. Going to dig out some non-ABBA music to take my mind off things. Grrr.

The whole thing was so cringey! The singing cheesiness around the 'announcement' really made me see how some people wouldn't like ABBA or take them seriously. Even the media articles about the new TV programmes tomorrow night still stick to the 'dust off your flares and platforms, all you dancing queens and kings'. It was SO underwhelming that it feels like the original 'huge news' was vetoed at the last minute, as earlier in the week he even said "we might have some big ABBA news". If it was just announcing picking your favourite track, why would there have been any 'might' about it. TBH I'm now bored and tired of having any glimmer of optimism taken the p#ss out of.

Nicked off PopJustice:
The new Dolby Atmos version of Waterloo sounds absolutely horrendous. The alternative language versions new to streaming sound like they’ve been remastered.

Is So Long the news? Announced as lost song and then play it. I would like to apologise unreservedly for dismissing news of a "huge" ABBA story. A poll, of people's favourite ABBA song ranks alongside the end of WW2, the first moon landing and Sophie Ellis Bexter getting to #2....again. This news which mere mortals might have missed 3 weeks ago has a short-list by broadcasting giant Sara Cox and dymamic and exciting writer Carl Magnus Palm. Once again sincere apologies for doubting the significance of this historic day.

My silence has said it all...
I genuinely feel for all of us on here, no matter how high or low our expectations were, this is a major disappointment, who knows who's to blame for the unnecessary hype, but it really wasn't worth it, and I'm trying to be polite....
For me so far , this whole 50th anniversary has been a let down, what little hope I had is virtually extinguished, ok you can't please them all , all of the time, and effectively they haven't... so let's see what's to come, I'm trying to adult about this, and will hang around until the end of 2024, where I may possibly leave for good and just enjoy the legacy that's been left.
Yes I'll vote and yes we know what will probably happen. It's a shame the last few days haven't lead to something " huge" the irony.... as it got us all excited and talking again.....
Until next post, chin up, it may not be all over yet, but that fat lady is on the stage........

[...] I feel pretty much the same, Graham. In the absence of new stuff - whatever 'new' might mean when it comes to their music - I really don't feel I've got much to say about ABBA now.

Re: So Long TOTP
I am pretty sure it has already featured on a BBC programme in recent years. Maybe a TOTP 2? Any one else think this?

For the record, my votes in the HUGE story went to Dancing Queen Knowing Me Knowing You Lay All Your Love On Me SOS Summer Night City Yes, I heard something this afternoon that you can only vote five times. How do they police that? Many people have more than one email address. And people can vote for, say, The Day Before You Came five times. It’s not over yet. I’m still clinging to the fact that the 1994 boxed set wasn’t released until the end of October and Live at Wembley in 2014 not until late September. I’m not sure when either of those were announced though. If there is an announcement of something interesting, hopefully it will be completely out of the blue and not built-up like this non-event was. I’m thinking nothing is going to happen though. The Waterloo releases, the documentary and the BBC stuff tomorrow might well be as good as it gets…

I’m not sure what makes those people "experts", but OK. That reminds me of the French and Saunders sketches where they’re doing breakfast or daytime TV and Dawn’s character is the “expert” on whatever they’re discussing that week, and subsequently talks drivel as she knows nothing about the subject.

As expected, we non-UK types can't vote. Gosh, sob, etc. Really? Is it linked to BBC iPlayer or something? My phone remembered my log-in details so I didn’t think much of it. A load of nonsense really as, even with a UK address, you can’t view content on iPlayer when you’re outside the UK.

Posts relating to The Day Before You Came (which appeared to have been based on misunderstandings and a desire to cause trouble by some parties, and those with an apparent agenda) have been moved to an old topic for that song: abbachat.com/thread/1052/day-before-came

As expected, we non-UK types can't vote. Gosh, sob, etc. Really? Is it linked to BBC iPlayer or something? [...] No idea. I followed the link and it asked me to do the usual registration thingy, then confirm my email etc. It was only then that the system said "Brits only." I should have known, because the Sounds app and the iPlayer won't work here in Ireland any more. I had to tune in online to waste a morning with Gary Davies. Maybe it has something to do with the broadcast licence? That said, we receive BBC TV stations 1, 2, and 4.
