ABBA Arrival- The Singles is written on the side of the box. Arrival – the first four Singles. That would have been nice if someone at Universal had some kind of humor

A bit of a mystery as to what has happened to KMKY. They have been delayed for some reason. I got three picture discs so far, just waiting for KMKY to land.

To get us in the mood for our postman delivering us a load of ABBA goodies in the next few days, I thought I'd post a cover photo of the Arrival Singles box set. An outtake from the Arrival photo sessions. Taken forty years ago and never seen the light of day! Until now...

Sigh. I emailed uDiscover's customer support about why I didn't get a dispatch notification. Their response:
Unfortunately there has been a delay in receiving Knowing Me, Knowing You: Picture Disc from the supplier, but we should be receiving stock in the next 3-14 days.
As soon the item leaves our warehouse you will receive a shipment confirmation email from us.
Please do let us know if you do not wish to wait for the item to come in stock and we can cancel the item for you.
Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience or disappointment caused by this delay.

Thought I should buy something to celebrate Arrival's 40th, so I've just ordered DQ picture disc before they sell out. There's still a few cheap ones left on ebay. I paid £9.99 free postage. I've just discovered the picture discs are actually cheaper on amazon than on ebay. KMKY is not on amazon though. Still elusive for some reason.

Amazon (UK) now have 'Knowing Me, Knowing You' for £9.15. Personally I've decided not to buy any further ABBA 'Records' until Benny & Bjorn allow something unreleased to be added to them. It is a decision that a lot of the ABBA Fans that I speak to have also made. What is now happening is that Universal are selling us the same old Songs by releasing them in different packages. I'm sure they'd love to be able to add unreleased stuff, but Benny & Bjorn ensure that, that is not happening. That is fine, as long as they all realise that it will mean that less & less Fans will be buying the ABBA releases that we do get. What will it be in late 1977? 'The Album's 9 Tracks spread over 4 sides of expensive Vinyl? With 'The Name Of The Game', 'Take A Chance On Me', & 'Eagle' released on 7 Inch Picture Disks, at around £10 a time? Maybe with 'Thank You For The Music' also released that way, to rake in even more cash? Yes, the 'Half Speed' Format is said to give a better Audio sound, (if you have the means to play it), but many other Acts manage to give their Fans both better Audio sound & Bonus Tracks, that are a special treat. Unfortunately, rewarding 'The Fans' is beyond Benny & Bjorn. As more & more Fans are realising, there is an attempt to 'milk' us out of as much of our cash as possible. Some Fans are happy to hand over their cash for such things, but many of us are tired of it & will no longer pay for Music that we already have. As a Fan said elsewhere - after Decades of our loyalty, ABBA Fans deserve to be treated better than this. He is 100% right. And over here in the USA we wait and wait. Even though I ordered the lot in two batches, I haven't received anything yet other than an email telling me it will be ready by 11 November, over a month late. Why can't they send the order that doesn't include the backordered items? I'm happy for you all, but I'm getting antsy...
Edit: The US branch of uDiscover had pushed all items back to 4 November (not 11) for some reason. But I ordered other items from UK uDiscover and that order is still labeled as pending. Maybe they ship international orders last for some reason.
2nd edit: I also agree with @onlyabba4me that it's getting tiresome with all these reissues, though for now I'm still buying most of them. I don't know how long that will last.

Yes, I've been notified that the remaining two picture discs (KNKY and MMM) are on their way. I also agree with @onlyabba4me that it's getting tiresome with all these reissues, though for now I'm still buying most of them. I don't know how long that will last. [/p] Normally I would be the first to agree here, and I was initially disappointed that nothing new would be getting a release. However, these vinyl issues are nice, and for the first time in a long while I actually think that some care has been taken with these. The fact that the artwork isn't (or doesn't appear to be) dodgy scans of the originals is a major plus for me. I'd have been disappointed with yet another CD issue, and thankfully they chose to just re-issue the 2006 deluxe giving most of us a reason not to bother getting it. Vinyl is where the music industry is these days. As I check that Super Deluxe Edition website regularly, I keep up with all the obscure (to me) vinyl releases that are happening. For once it's nice that these are being done for an act I like. I'll go as far as to say that the coloured vinyl boxed set is one of the best modern issues that's been done for ABBA. The picture discs are nice too. I didn't bother with the album but I'm sure the audiophiles must love it (this is where we could do with Rudolf's input).

I'm not a completist, so the one picture disc will do for me. DQ came yesterday and looks great. I'm glad to see the picture is the right way around! Not mirrored like on a lot of the international picture sleeves back in the 70s. Now what I would have really loved to commemorate Arrival's 40th is a picture disc of Monsier Monsier, but I guess this track will never see an official release.

I, too, won't buy another ABBA "record" unless it includes something unreleased. Alan states that vinyl is where the music industry is these days. I don't doubt that, but it seems odd, because few people have a turntable these days.

Just out of curiosity really.... im like a few on here, I'm not really interested in buying anything anymore unless it's going to be " new " , I just feel I have nearly everything a 100 times over, obviously my choice, I used to be a collector, nearly obsessive. However my question is , why are you collecting now? ...just because it's something new ? .... to add to the collection.. or an investment, which perhaps is the hardest one for me to understand, as if an investment you tend to sell at some point, which may take years for it to increase in value, even longer than some of us may live..lol, and if it's a collection, what do you tend to do with them, .... stick them in a box under the bed, for someone to throw away when you die? Sorry if it all sounds so cynical, but with today's technical age is it really worth having all this vinyl, it's only a passing fad again.. trying to keep conversation going..

They should put out a compilation called: 'You Don't Have To Buy It! (As bait they could stick a 'previously unseen' picture from an old album photo session on the cover, one that barely differs from a previously used image familiar to all.) It's a line that's often used as a retort by ultra fans who themselves almost always buy everything issued regardless, and are thus arguably helping to perpetuate the impasse. At any rate, unless a message is sent to B&B and co. via a mass refusal to indulge all this 'recycling' (how many people are even going to spin their yellow vinyl edition of Money Money Money in order to check that the grooves on the disc do indeed play the track listed on the cover and label?), it seems they won't be changing their MO any time soon.

I think the fact that these are limited edition is what makes this interesting for me. It's not really about what's on the discs. Plus I find coloured vinyl quite fun, and picture discs haven't been done for these four singles before. I've seen the coloured vinyl set being listed on eBay for more than double the price, and also individual singles from it being sold separately.
I might never want to sell it in my lifetime, but it's knowing that I could if I wanted to - there would be a market for it. And it is quite satisfying seeing it offered on eBay for much more than I paid for it. And you're right, I'll probably never play it, but that isn't the point in me getting it.
If this was any kind of CD issue then I would agree 100% with you - I've no interest in those unless something new was on them. But this is different.
I would disagree that vinyl is a passing fad. It's resisted so many attempts at killing it off. Right now it's a strong format, and probably helping to keep the record companies going. They can charge premium prices for vinyl whilst CDs are cheap, and even legally downloading seems to be a passing phase - it's all about streaming now.

The Official Charts Company compile many Weekly UK Charts - including ones for Vinyl Singles & Physical Singles. ABBA have 4 of the Top 5 in the latest Vinyl Singles Chart - W/E 20th October 2016.
They also have 4 of the Top 6 in the Physical Singles Chart -- 2 - 4 - 5 - 6.
However, The OCC only have the correct image for 'Knowing Me, Knowing You'. Links www.officialcharts.com/charts/vinyl-singles-chart/www.officialcharts.com/charts/physical-singles-chart/Every Friday, when the new UK Charts are revealed 'Music Week's' Alan Jones comments on them. The OCC let him have full access to their Sales figures. He has just commented on the Sales of the current 4 ABBA Vinyl Singles. As you can see, the 4 ABBA Singles only sold 876 copies between them. The Vinyl Singles Market, is very small in the UK, & most 7" Vinyl Hits do not sell more than a few 100 copies. Here is what Alan Jones said:, "There are no ABBA tracks in the Top 75, but the Swedish group dominate the 7-inch singles chart, where they have four of the top five following the release of new picture disc versions of Fernando (No.2, 225 sales), Dancing Queen (No.3, 219 sales), Money Money Money (No.4, also 219 sales) and Knowing Me, Knowing You (No.5, 213 sales). Jamie T's Power Over Men - also a picture disc - sold five copies more than Fernando to take the No.1 slot".
7" Chart1- Jamie T [Power Over Men] 230 2- ABBA [Fernando] 225
3- ABBA [Dancing Queen] 219
4- ABBA [Money Money Money] 219
5- ABBA [Knowing Me Knowing You] 213

How nice to see that! Interesting that Fernando is the biggest hit on both charts - I somehow would have expected Dancing Queen to take that honour.

"There are no ABBA tracks in the Top 75" says Alan Jones, as though ABBA are a current act. I wouldn't expect these issues to be big sellers, and as they're limited edition, that wouldn't be possible anyway. Also, the coloured vinyl boxed set is ineligible for the chart as the discs are not available separately.
In any case, the four A-sides don't have to prove themselves. They've sold millions in the past, either as singles or as parts of the various albums they appeared on. If they've collectively sold only 800 or so copies this time round, what does it matter?

Alan - Alan Jones very rarely says what is going on in the UK Vinyl Singles Chart. He is actually an ABBA Fan, and he was just pointing out that whilst none of the ABBA Singles were in the main UK Singles Chart, they were doing very well in the Vinyl Singles Chart. He went on to say how many the 4 Singles had sold. He was just stating a fact, & was not trying to say that they were selling poorly. Nearly all UK Vinyl Singles are not big sellers, and Alan will be well aware that the 4 current Singles are a 'Limited Edition' - he just did not mention that fact.
'Old' Chart Acts are now called 'Heritage' Acts, & very few of them actually sell well on Vinyl, these days. I know that, (in the UK), The Beatles do, as do Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac & Queen, but they are all seen as more collectable than ABBA. It is very rare for a 'Pop' Group, from the 1970's, to be able to sell several thousand Vinyl Singles & Albums in the 21st Century. Even if ABBA's 4 Singles were not a 'Limited Edition', there is not enough interest in them to see them sell 10,000 to 50,000 copies. Universal know this & that is why they will not release them in bigger numbers. It is also why they would see no point in promoting them, even if thousands of copies were pressed.
I've thought of something interesting regarding 'Eagle', if 'The Album' is given the Vinyl treatment in late 2017. If the Singles from it are released on 7 Inch Vinyl, then 'Eagle' will end up being a Hit in the UK Vinyl Singles, & Physical Singles Charts. It will be the first time - ever - that 'Eagle' has been in any UK Chart. (Due to some 'genius' not bothering to allow the UK & Ireland to have it as a 1978 Single). We will see. If It is a 2017 Single, I wonder if it will be the full version & not the edited version that was released on the 1978 Single.
In the meantime, 'ABBA Gold' is down from No.82 to No.88, this Week, in the UK. In its 758th Top 100 Week. All of the other ABBA releases come & go, but 'Gold' always carries on selling. It sold around 1,200 to be at No.88. Universal know this & they also know that it will be its 25th Anniversary in September 2017. So we may get yet another re-vamp of that. It is what gives Universal the most cash from ABBA releases. The other things - Picture Disk Singles, 'Live' Albums, & 'Deluxe' Albums sell less & less each time.

So those sales must come from Amazon? If so, I'd bet ABBA will all but disappear from the vinyl singles chart next week, given that uDiscover and the Museum shop have so much of the stock, and so many sales will be "overseas". But how great to see these four titles bunched together near at the top of two charts! (It also puts vinyl singles sales generally into perspective: the resurgence of the format means that a new act with any kind of fanbase could probably press a single on vinyl and get themselves a chart entry. But I digress).
Is The Album as iconic as Arrival? For some reason, I don't see it getting the same royal treatment next year - but it would be nice to be wrong.

I would hope that this isn't going to be done for The Album.
However, those that were on the other forum may remember we had a topic once about a Live in Australia 1977 album to be released next year, to mark the 40th anniversary. Someone posted it announcing it as fact, as ABBA Intermezzo (whatever that is) had a source in Universal, and has been right about previous releases.
We all got quite excited about it until we realised that no where else on the web had any mention of it! To this day, I've still only heard it on that forum, but a few did point out that ABBA Intermezzo is quite reliable. If they really do have a source in Universal, there might be something in it. I hope it wasn't a deliberate hoax or just wishful thinking/delusion.
Plus Carl Magnus Palm unearthed the recordings of the Royal Albert Hall concerts whilst writing his book. It's possible these might be passed off as "Live in Australia" as Australia is closely associated with the 1977 tour due to The Movie.

Top row: the picture discs Second row: the coloured vinyl covers Third row: From 2014 40-single boxed set Bottom row: 1984 blue vinyl boxed set (what on earth were CBS thinking of with that Knowing Me, Knowing You artwork?). Notice that the Money Money Money photos are reversed, proving that CBS didn't use the Polar artwork - many countries used the reverse images. Changed my mind about the new issues being recreations rather than scans. I think they're scans as well. Disappointing.

I didn't mean to make it sound as though turntables were hard to find here in the USA. They're not hard to find here, but I don't think that many people have them. But I could be mistaken.

My box set and picture discs arrived this morning. Love them (even if the sleeves are scans). The vinyl weight is quite impressive.
Am I right in thinking that the picture discs are not limited edition? My box set is numbered (16 - pretty great!) but the picture discs are not.
One thought: it would have been nice if the backs of the picture discs matched the colour of the corresponding discs in the box set. Or maybe I need to get out more! 😀

I imagine that, even if they're not termed "limited edition", the picture discs are limited as there's presumably only one pressing of them to meet demand. Sometimes actual "limited edition" can be easier to find as there's a specific number regardless of what demand is.
