Ironically The Sun for all it's faults accurately predicted a lot about Voyage...lol
The fact that the UK press is reporting this , should mean a big promotion from ( BMG) , that should be interesting to see how it unfolds... I'm guessing they will be aiming for a top 10 album, on the back of Voyage. It's reported they have guided her in a new direction..emmmmm
All exciting times, I still however feel that 2024 will be the final hurrah of new music, but with this announcement I'm not to sure...
Hope we don't have to wait to long....

I was. Really unsure of where to post this or start another thread....
That all said, I was out for a walk on Saturday in Lymington ( Hampshire) which happened to be New Forest Pride day....So the following is very cliche... I heard Voulez Vous being sang, which I followed to a park , where a surprisingly good tribute act was performing they are called " A Twist of Abba " anyone heard of them? All very predictable but of course , finishing with DQ and encore of TYFTM ... but as said surprisingly good if you like that sort of thing.
Just two girls, no boys and they have been around for years...( google )
Are any ABBA tribute acts worth it ?

or not..... It seems to have gone quite quiet again in general and on here, no disrespect and it's great to see new members posting..it's mostly to do with old subjects , which is fine as I imagine there are angles that even the most seasoned fan may see / think differently about..
However there's nothing really new to talk about, we had a little flurry about the potential release of those two ( possibly more) tracks that got everybody excited for 5 minutes ( naturally ) then it died ...
So do you think it was a deliberate ploy by whoever to leak that news ? To keep the public/ us interested or was it a genuine mistake ? Also do you think it's deliberate at the moment to say nothing about the future... i.e. 50th anniversary/ Eurovision etc, all part of a marketing ploy for that final flourish....
Did I miss ? What was Zoe Balls big secret , surely it wasn't that so called " talent " show...
Your thoughts on ABBA Marketing in general, good ? Bad ? Past and present.....

Again playing devils advocate...sorry...
Re above... who are we actually aiming this at .. a few hundred at most... Abba Live has not gone down that well in the past with public, so again is it just wishful thinking of only a handful of " us"
I'd love to proved wrong and we get something fantastic... realistically though.......

Just playing devil advocate here...
Firstly I agree with comments above...regarding the actor...
However do you really think they would go to the expense of removing him , I doubt it very much, let's also be honest here, apart from " us" more dedicated fans, will the general public know ? After all it's a nearly 50 year old film.. a whole new generation has been born and grown up .... apart from the odd few who will research.
How many will actually see the film a few hundred at most.. so I can't see it being cut....after all it's an integral part of the story...alas

The last few posts have been a bit of an eye opener for me, or am I really that naive? I guess I knew it went on, ( the David Williams threw me, if true ) ,
Even abba ( I could get crucified here ) collaboratorated with Neil Sedaka with Ring Ring, in some form ? Lyrics ? So it shouldn't have been to much of a shock.....
Goes to show though are these " stars " as clever as their fans make out, thinking it's all their own work ( not Abba ) ... it's a business. I. Guess and mostly everyone wins to some degree...
Back on topic, for some I guess So Long was a mistake,in releasing as a single, and features quite low in estimations... However out walking yesterday , I- phones in and on shuffle, So Long , came to my ears.... and I quite liked it, very much of its time, so why did it flop here in the U.K.? ( we usually followed Germany quite closely regarding Abba hits with a few exceptions, but it was number 11 over there, but failed to chart here in the U.K.) . Was it down to promotion, Eurovision backlash, ? Any thoughts ?

Well said...
I know we tend to be hyper critical, and Voyage gets some bashing at times, but I guess that's why we are " fans" I just remember waiting for so long Living in that eternal hope, and thank God it happened and with the potential of a few more tracks to come.
Yes of course there are tracks I don't like and probably never liked, but am I grateful, yes, as these mostly early tracks lead to the greatness of tracks that we love today.

To be honest I think I should know the answer after all these years. Perhaps it's just my memory..
However, we all know about Dancing Queens missing verse, and recently remembered On And On And On, had a missing verse as well, so listened albeit on You Tube so not great quality..
So my questions are
Was it right to omit them ? Are there any others out there we know of?
Personally I'd like to hear them added properly , as it adds another dimension, and takes nothing away from the originals...

OMG ^^ I didn't realise until you mentioned the subliminal influence that the likes and media had on my choices 😱
That all said I've always preferred the more uptempo, depends on mood of course..
As many have mentioned, with over 100 tracks to choose from it's virtually impossible to narrow it down to a top " whatever " , that all said I do feel in general we have our preferred tracks. When was the last time I listened to the likes of Watch Out, Man In The Middle etc...years....

Ok, for my second moment in time , one year on... A couple of surprises for myself, no doubt in the fullness of time, and I had to choose just one track, normality would resume... I've based it on what I've listened to, and for ease of writing have just done a top 20..lol...
1. Lay All Your Love On Me ( up a1) 2. Summer Night City ( up 5) 3. Don't Shut Me Down ( up 1) 4. Dancing Queen ( down 3 !! ) 5. The Visitors ( up 2) 6. Kisses Of Fire (down 3) 7. Voulez Voys ( up 7) 8. Take A Chance On Me ( up 4) 9. Lovelight (up2) 10. On And On And On ( up 17 ) 11. When You Danced With Me ( new entry ) 12. Gimme Gimme Gimme ( up 3) 13. The Winner Takes It All ( down 4) 14. SOS ( up 2) 15. As Good As New ( down 10) 16. Angeleyes ( up 21) 17. Hey Hey Helen ( non mover ) 18. If It Wasn't For The Nights ( non mover ) 19. I've Been Waiting For You ( down 9) 20. Money Money Money ( new entry)
All are subjective of course, and only 2 tracks from Voyage, will any others make it as time goes by ? Looks as if I'm a sucker for the more uptempo tracks..... Back to this in 2024.. lol

Well done, never a easy task and there were always going to be surprises, and yours is no different, your number 2 will surprise most. There's never a correct " list" just what we prefer at a given moment in time... so thanks for posting...
I noticed that I started this just over a year ago, so for fun I'll try and post my current top 10/20 and see if much has changed, a little shuffle here and there I expect but who knows there may be a surprise.... later....

Alan I doubt anyone will come out of the woodwork let alone remember decisions made, which is a shame . You could argue both tracks actually missed out as " which one to play . Could it have made number one, if Angeleyes was the A side, it's possible but unlikely , Boomtown Rats were solidly at number one with I don't like Mondays a new direction in music.. As we know there were a few discrepancies on chart positions at the time, I can't really recall why. But I do remember as time went by. In its chart run That AA was favoured over VV so it's strange how rolls reversed as years went by .. why... is it that AA dated ?
I guess a better question would be " Wrong decisions " made by record companies, it's always easier on reflection , but there were some obvious errors, I guess the most glaring was WAISAD but were there others ?

In the latest stats to come out.... Gold has sold approximately 115,800 up to end of June, making it the 13th best seller of the year so far in the U.K. It's actually only 3,000 copies behind 10th place and that's less than its average weekly sales of around 4,000, which it constantly sells, and more each week. So way on target compared to last year to finish in that top 10.
With 25 weeks left of 2023, with an average of 4K sold each week, we are looking at another 100k taking Gold over 200k for the year, 2022 fell just short around 198k.
Of the 27 charts this year, Gold has been top 20 for 25 weeks and top 10 for 4, highest position 10.
Total now around 6.35 million in the UK

Another tough question, as we all want different things, and let's be honest this show is targeted to the Masses and I agree I think you said it Johnny, perhaps the show should be called Abbas Greatest Hits or the like, but for the masses , Voyage works well as I guess most acts name a show....
That said, yes I'd love to see a longer show, add more, but that looks unlikely. . Yes the opening is fantastic and they are both relatively unknown but work so well , again but the masses want "Gold" so there can't be to many non singles as it won't appeal, so alas the ratio is about right.
I disagree with Eagle, which is probably one if not the best known non singles, it's a shame it's in a Cartoon .....
I said on another thread I do think that the DYMK section is the track that could be changed every day/ week and be sung by the band to add variety, that Bjorn announcement is wasted really. I could see the band doing Eagle for instance...or any rockier track..... Like few here I'm waiting for a set change, but I think when it happens it'll only be one track at a time.. years of one track change unless it's a big change for everything. Far to technical....
Also think DQ should close the show.... everyone leaves euphoric...
so if show was extended... 15

I'm glad you enjoyed it Johnny, it's a wonder after so many of us have and you've heard their response, I'm equally interested when Joesph has seen it as well , with both of you being such ardent fans and post well on here.
Of course there are tweeks. Which has been covered in one way or another by us all, preferences etc, but fundamentally it's about the show and how good or bad we perceive it to be...thankfully very few negative comments,
It's been over a year now since I've saw the show, I'm itching to see it again, but waiting for that set change( like a few on here) ... just to see what works, I agree with most of your comments. And yes wouldn't we all like more. It's a shame that Bjorn introduces DYMK, as that's one part of the show that could be changed every day,let the live band choose another track, would give them variety as well.. ironically HIYS would work well.......any rockier track, dare I say Rock Me even...
Overall though it's a fantastic feel great show for a multi generational audience... a little cheaper perhaps..lol

If More Gold is allowed only 4 track changes, then it would work with addtion of ISHFIY and DSMD plus those 2 new tracks.... What to omit would be the next question...
Do you think anyone in Universal taps into our conversations ?
|
|
|
Post by foreverfan on Jul 1, 2023 8:53:36 GMT
Tough decision, there's for and against for everything... I'm guessing it might boil down to Universal and how much money they can make...
Voyage. Deluxe seems the most obvious, but has it run its course, as we know studio albums are tough to shift, plus it's over a year old, and you'd think they would have done it by now, 19 weeks on UK album charts shows it doesn't have longevity. So unlikely to stir up much more interest.
A fan favourite and that says it all , Anthology, but probably will be far to expensive and very small sales, commercially successful, I doubt it
The same applies for the Definitive
More Gold, as pains as it is for me to say probably the best option, revamp, take out a few tracks as Johnny mention, add the two, plus something like Dream World etc along with IATC , you'd have a mixture of well known and new and as the likes of SNC is in the show, it may attract a few thousand more sales.
What we all want and what we will get is another matter... A new Album....which appears to be unlikely
So due to lack of real option , at this moment in time More Gold, would I buy it, probably if it had a few more new and unknown but I really don't know...
One thing for certain over the next 10 years plus we will probably be subjected to many compilations......

As good a place as any....
Potentially exciting news from Colin ( onlyabba4me ).....
Apparently the 2 unfinished tracks are now finished and there could be more, but not an album, set for release 2024 which makes sense... I think he knows someone in the know....
Also a TV show "50 years since Waterloo"
Perhaps it's not all over yet......as if we thought it was...lol

Agree Johnny , a bit of a surprise all round, less so Tattoo, but didn't think it would be so high let alone climb. The other 3, UK , Finland , Norway has also surprised as all still in the top 100 abeit the lower reaches and probability is they will disappear next week, so all in all ESC 2023 a success.

Does anyone know ?
In the U.K. Gold sells on average 4-5 k each week and hovers in the top 20. In the US, it hovers. Around the 100 mark ( this week 104 ) but how many does it sell? I've read it's total sales are close or over 10 million , but as not updated for years, officially it's ironically the same as the UK , 6 million...

Tough choice between SNC and LAYLOM... love both.... ironic both follow each other in Voyage show.. so Has SNC come into B&Bs favour....?
Personally I always thought SNC should've been on Gold if being honest in place of.. TYFTM, the arguements win.. alas.. From what I remember not enough room to include SNC...for it to be on Gold

Just for those who are interested....
Gold surpasses another record, being the first ever album in the U.K. Album charts to achieve 1100 weeks in the top 100
Still in the top 20 this year peaking at 10 four times....... selling approx 90k plus.. around 4-5k a week....
