Ok I’ll have a go a creating a current top 40 list, current, as we all know it does change daily, or even minute by minute..lol That said , I guess most of the top end stay pretty stable and if push came to shove our number one is probably always the same, so those that do know a little about me won’t be to surprised at my number 1.
Im not going to write why I chose that one over another, every time but will have a go , but probably a few comments along the way, but it’s usually preference over another. I guess there will be a few surprises along the way, and of course no one has to participate.. it may end up just being me posting a list of ABBA tracks !!
Ive tried to be realistic and although Voyage does appear, not as much as one may think, also it doesn’t mean I dislike any of the tracks from 41 onwards, it’s just for this moment in time, and you may see Watch Out make the top 10 one day !! Highly unlikely...
So my first batch...
40. Fernando. The first track I can remember being totally mesmerised, and fluctuates between twee and great now..... 39. Mamma Mia. Probably low because of over use in everything. Can just wash over me... 38. Should I laugh Or Cry. Tragically left off The Visitors album, to good to be just a b side 37. Angeleyes.. was really up there in my top 20 at one point, growing on me again. 36. Name Of The Game. Should be higher ? Don’t play often, but when I do... fantastic ahead of its time.. 35. Why Did It Have To Be Me... don’t understand why it’s disliked so much, great little rocker.. 34. When I Kissed The Teacher.. should’ve been a single... bit risqué these days ?..no 33. Soldiers.. very atmospheric one of the stand out tracks from Visitors 32. I Still Have Faith In You.. surprise ?, it initially made me cry, or wet eyes ! Great track, single..no... 31. One Of Us.. So different, Mandolins ? Never tire of hearing, although not that often these days....
So there you have it my first batch .. there may be a few surprises and there are definitely more to come Comment if you wish, no offence is ever taken, it’s for fun and about time I put pen to paper again, we did it in the last forum and was great to see what and what we don’t like. A top 100 is probably to hard these days.

Top 40? Hmm, even Top 20 was difficult to compile, but I'll definitely try... but probably in no particular order.

Blimey, I wonder how my Top 40 would look with the Voyage songs to consider...? Would I even be able to rank them now?

I enjoy reading others' opinions about ABBA songs. But placing songs in a list is, as Graham (foreverfan) says, likely to change from day to day. And I find the reasons for such placements more interesting than than where this or that song ends up on the list. But finding a few apt words for my selections would be too challenging for me! So I really appreciate those who give it a go!

Not for me either, I could never rank songs. Perhaps I Still Have Faith In You and Don’t Shut Me Down might make a top 40 if I was to do one, but the other tracks are very unlikely to make the list. Even there there’s some bias though. Songs I first heard between 40 and 45 years ago are always going to win against ones I’ve only heard in the last 10 months!

2nd batch... As mentioned, this list could change on a daily basis, but for now this is in some kind of order, also just for fun.
30. Ring Ring.. first big surprise ? Always liked so catchy you can’t help but sing a long 29. One Man One Woman.. So adult, 28. Elaine.. surprise 2... so catchy ,so unheard by general public... 27. On And On And On... love the rockier side of Abba, even missing verse is good.. love to see those missing verses added.. 26. When All Is Said And Done... should’ve been a single....enough said 25. Ode To Freedom... So un Abba it’s Abba.. great melody... 24. Like An Angel Passing Through My Room... has the tendency to make my eyes water.. so simple, so effective... 23. Dream World.. one of those tracks I can’t really explain, except full of energy and fun.. 22. Hole In Your Soul.. another rocker 21. Eagle.. another missed opportunity especially in USA for single release. Timeless...
So there you have it for now, no need to respond if not interested as totally understand, or just do a top 20 or Top 10 or nothing....lol...

Maybe you have the same attitude to singles as I have, Graham: that they don't necessarily always represent the songs one favours most at any given time, or now? So even though you think WAISAD should have been a single (as I do), you obviously favour some other non-single ABBA songs more.

Post by foreverfan on Jun 19, 2022 10:15:49 GMT
^^^ Yes , it’s a given time thing, in 81/82 WAISAD, really should’ve been released as a single, but of course there are many Other tracks in other years that I prefer, not all of the UK single releases have made my top 40 for now..

3rd batch.... If this was a forever list, it would be practically impossible to do, so for now these are currently amongst the ones I enjoy and a couple of surprises ?
20. Just A Notion.. perhaps because of its lost status, it instantly grew on me, it deserved better .. perhaps in 78/79.. 19. The Day Before You Came, classy track that’s always going to be up there, I understand it’s appeal after all these years 18. If It Wasn’t For The Night’s... was it a missed single ? Probably yes..again always there or thereabouts 17. Hey Hey Helen.. big surprise for many ? But I like the rockier tracks and this hits the groove and lyrics are mature for the time... 16. S.O.S. Ask me again in a years time and this could be top 10 or out of the 20, it’s a grower for me at the moment 15. Gimme Gimme Gimme.. Although akin to VV album,it’s so different always a great Groove, hate it when they cut it short on the radio 14. Voulez Vous, on another day this could be top 10, don’t quite understand why it’s not loved more 13. The Piper. another surprise for many, but how different is this, great beat and story. Could’ve been double A side with ST over Christmas 1980 ? 12. Take A Chance On Me...number 2 next week..lol...it’s so good 11. Lovelight. Perhaps the last great shocker, always preferred to Chiquitita, not sure why, beat perhaps.. but un loved by many , in previous poll on last forum this was in my top 5, so has great appeal for me, will it be top 10 again though.......
So just my top 10 to go, not to many shocks or surprises but these top 20 , yes even 40 , the vast majority would be there again in a years time , just different order ...

I'm glad to see The Piper right up there. As I recall mentioning on the old forum, I thought it was one of ABBA's neglected beauties. I still think that. But 13! A pleasant surprise for me.

Ok, here’s my final top 10 of this moment in time and it’s probably harder to explain these top 10, as it’s already been said by so many before, but in general I’d “ stop” to listen to all of these whether it’s on radio, TV. Etc....they will vary of course but if push came to shove to shove, I’d pick these ....
10. I’ve Been Waiting For You.... simple classic love song, and fell in love with it all those years ago and it’s still there...
9. The Winner Takes It All.. a few years ago this would be challenging for number 1, it’s still great and sounds better dare I say on the radio, I’m one of those who hear the beat slightly to much.. but hey can you really fault this classic.
8. Knowing Me Knowing You.. why so low? Next week number 4, but always up there,
7. The Visitors.. Oh how I wish this was a single here in the UK, who’s know how much success it would’ve had but boy what a change of direction . Brilliant opener in Voyage
6. Summer Night City.. what a grower over the years for me, the beat the drive, should’ve been a bigger hit, ( but then most of us would say that..).
5. As Good As New.. only one more track from VV beats this..hint.... fantastic upbeat happy track
4. Don’t Shut Me Down... This is now a classic for me, I sing it in my head so it’s there amongst the best, I’d imagine it may in future ( if I ever do this again ) would still be top 10. ABBA at their best.
3. Kisses Of Fire. It’s getting predictable now ! From day one in 79 this is out of this world, again a single over DYMK ( which doesn’t make my top 40 ) Previous forum my number 2, so has stood test of time, and on a given day number 1 That climax, well enough said...
2. Lay All Your Love On Me... what can I say, just close to perfection for a dance track, even the Disconet Mix is great, have a listen if never had...
1. Dancing Queen.. no surprise at all, 46 years of adoring this track , If I guess on average I’ve heard this 100 days a year, therefore I’m close to hearing this 5000 ( probably more ) times , and it never tires. Alas it’s gone a bit cliche these days but just look at what happen when it’s played , Voyage a prime example, everyone Stands, it just makes me smile proud and happy that I / We have this track in my life... it’s going to be there at the end as well !
Well there you have it , next week slightly different order and probably a few new entries, but all make me smile and enjoy... Hope you enjoyed reading..... Graham.

Glad to see The Visitors, my favourite ABBA track, in your top 10, Graham. As for Kisses Of Fire, a few years back I lent my friend my mp3 player (how quaint such a device seems now!) so he could give ABBA songs a good listen, and a few days later he singled out that song. I was surprised, but now I also rate Kisses Of Fire highly. Love it! And the singing from Agnetha and Frida really is fantastic. Mind you, when is it not.

OK, I finally had time to do it, however, with no in-depth analysing and just in an alphabetical order. Some choices were really tough. And I still feel guilty for omitting few of my favourites... I Wonder for example. Is it really so low? And does He Is Your Brother belong in my Top 40 at all?! But than I think of that amazing live version from the 1977 tour and...I go: "Yes, yes, it does." Until, of course, I think of the amazing live version of I Wonder from the very same tour Too many good songs to choose from. Angeleyes As Good As New Bang-A-Boomerang Cassandra Chiquitita Dance Dancing Queen Don't Shut Me Down Eagle Fernando Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! He Is Your Brother Hole In Your Soul I Am The City I'm A Marionette I've Been Waiting For You I Still Have Faith In You Keep An Eye On Dan Knowing Me, Knowing You Lay All Your Love On Me Like An Angel Passing Through My Room Lovelight Lovers Mamma Mia Money, Money, Money Move On One Man, One Woman Our Last Summer So Long Soldiers SOS Summer Night City Take A Chance On Me Thank You For The Music The Day Before You Came The Name Of The Game The Piper The Visitors The Winner Takes It All When I Kissed The Teacher

Good Top 10. The top 6 nice and upbeat.
Don't Shut Me Down is indeed an ABBA classic. I would also have Ode to Freefom and I Still Have Faith in You in my list. I agree ISHFIY was not single material

Thank you Graham, for your great post of your current favourite ABBA songs. With careful deliberation here are mine,
42. JUST LIKE THAT ( ABBA have reached their pinnacle with a sophisticated pop rollercoaster of emotion. I disagree as I think the verse and chorus blend perfectly together. ) 41. WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE ( An accomplished fitting end to a strained relationship. ) 40. LAY ALL YOUR LOVE ON ME ( An electronic night club stomping genius. I love Agnetha's " green-eyed monster " delivery. ) 39. ELAINE ( A punchy slice of electro-pop. ) 38. WHEN YOU DANCED WITH ME ( Joyfully gushing and uplifting with a mighty spring in its step. ) 37. GONNA SING YOU MY LOVESONG ( An unashamed reflection of the opposing aspects to love. ) 36. DREAM WORLD ( Bouncy and quirky. ) 35. BUMBLEBEE ( Incredible heartfelt vocals from Frida regarding the plight of our beloved insects. ) 34. HEY HEY HELEN ( Full of attitude. ) 33. I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU ( Subtle balladry at its most sincere about an everlasting bond of love. ) 32. DANCING QUEEN ( From start to finish, this is an iconic floor filler. Faultless. One of ABBA's finest moments if tarnished a little by ubiquitious radio airplay. ) 31. THE NAME OF THE GAME ( A jubilant yet pensive pop masterpiece. ) 30. AS GOOD AS NEW ( Delightfully uplifting pop only the band can muster. ) 29. I DO I DO I DO I DO I DO ( A bright and breezy " happy-go-lucky " declaration of sentimentality. ) 28. CHIQUITITA ( Melancholic yet exhilarating with crystal clear vocals from the ladies. Love Benny's foot tapping piano finale. Pop music of impeccable quality. ) 27. FERNANDO ( A beautiful and moving reminiscence told by two former comrades of war. Classic ABBA delivering regret tinged with joy in their inimitable way. ) 26. MY LOVE MY LIFE ( Agnetha's yearningly pure tones depict sentiments of unrequited love. ) 25. BANG-A-BOOMERANG ( Zesty and irresistibly catchy. ) 24. ANGELEYES ( Glorious yet with an underlying trace of cautious regret. ) 23. SOLDIERS ( Deep and mysterious yet majestic and sweeping. Relating to political turmoil. Often fails to receive the acclaim it justly merits. ) 22. TIGER ( Brooding and menacing. ) 21. THE DAY BEFORE YOU CAME ( Pop music at its most introspective. A stalwart contribution from all four. Agnetha's mournful mundane re-collection, Frida's haunting lament, an emotionally charged command of keyboards from Benny and profoundly stirring lyrics from Bjorn. A mighty epitaph of a swansong. ) 20. ODE TO FREEDOM ( The perfect closer to conclude " Voyage ". Triumphant yet melancholic. Pure theatre. 19. CASSANDRA ( Featuring an unmissably strong lead from Frida with Agnetha's rousing vocal interjections. A tragic tale of impending disaster and doom. 18. HAPPY NEW YEAR ( Within an incredibly beautiful melody, heart warming yet cynical lyrics expressed within Agnetha's stunning performance. A bittersweet celebration of the dawn of a new year. ) 17. OUR LAST SUMMER ( An epic evocation of a fleeting love affair in care free Paris steered by an outstanding wistful lead from Frida. The band know how to create and deliver perfect pop. ) 16. GIMME GIMME GIMME GIMME ( A MAN AFTER MIDNIGHT ) ( Classic disco with a raunchy and untamed attitude stamped all over. Guaranteed to fill each and every nightclub. ) 15. THAT'S ME ( Joyous pop meets disco. An uplifting kind of a love song yet with a sense of self-doubt and insecurity. ) 14. I CAN BE THAT WOMAN ( Exceptional story telling from Agnetha about the trials and tribulations of falling victim to alcohol addiction. Conflicting emotions from sentimental to bitter. " Wow, does it pack a punch ". I love it ! ) 13. ANDANTE ANDANTE ( An exquisite slice of balladry. A little naughty but so much more than nice. Frida delivers in true ABBA style. ) 12. ONE OF US ( Enveloped within a forlorn and unsurpassed melody, Agnetha's tender and yearning tone depicts an end of a relationship yet there is a glimmer of reconciling hope. ) 11. WHEN I KISSED THE TEACHER ( Pure unashamed pop. Blissful and bright from beginning to end. ) 10. KISSES OF FIRE ( Sheer bliss. A soft and sensual lead is followed by an explosion of a chorus. One of ABBA's most catchy earworms. ) 9. EAGLE ( A majestic anthem with an ethereal ambience. The ABBA ladies propel one into flight in the same manner as the mighty bird Bjorn refers to. Pure sophistication. ) 8. SOS ( One of the band's finest achievements. Iconic pop of an accomplished quality. ) 7. I STILL HAVE FAITH IN YOU ( Featuring an unforgettably eloquent lead from Frida, this rousing ballad declares the band's mighty friendship which has weathered many a storm through the passing of time. ) 6. DON'T SHUT ME DOWN ( Agnetha's glorious performance transforms into a powerful chorus. Classic ABBA in 2021 style. Testimony to the band's enduring appeal and talent. ) 5. MOVE ON ( A charming poetic ode to the simple pleasures in life. Endearingly joyful yet pensive within lush vocals and harmonies. ) 4. IF IT WASN'T FOR THE NIGHTS ( Another slice of timeless pop featuring splendid performances from both ladies. Shame, this exuberant anthem never " saw the light of day " as a potential massive hit in the making. 3. SLIPPING THROUGH MY FINGERS ( The infant-like tone in Agnetha's voice adds gravitas to this very melancholic and moving portrayal of fleeting childhood. ) 2. KNOWING ME KNOWING YOU ( Laden with emotion Frida's story telling lead is magnificent whilst Agnetha's softly spoken whispers add to the troubled melodrama. A classic epitome of marital strife which has endured the test of time. ) 1. THE WINNER TAKES IT ALL ( Deceptively beautiful this pop masterpiece is surrounded by a pathos of utter sadness, Agnetha's pained anguish will thaw the coldest of hearts. As this iconic lament to lost love reaches its conclusion many a tear is shed. Hard to believe a sophisticated slice of devastating drama evolved from a bottle of whisky. )
There you have my personal favourite current ABBA songs. I hope you enjoy reading my post. ( ie don't all fall asleep )

Maybe it was a tad harsh in placing " Dancing Queen " so low. I am at odds with myself as I could have placed it so much higher. However, my love for " Dancing Queen " will never wane. OK I admit to feeling a little guilty. With regards to " The Day Before You Came " it is nothing short of a theatrical masterpiece and I will always treasure that fact. You never know it might feature a lot higher. My chart may change when I have seen " Voyage " the concert. I have a deep and abiding fondness for introspective ABBA especially the break up ballads. My rating is an honest insight. Your feedback is very welcome.

Well done Eddie, it’s never that easy to do a top ?? Of course your never going to please anyone but yourself let alone everyone else .. and of course we all know it’s gonna change in the next 5 minutes..lol That all said, we all have our usual favourites, that will appear Time and time again, , I for one could never imagine DQ being outside my top 3, and I’ve heard it thousands of times...the same with you and TWTIA, I expect.... So well done, in trying to create a moment in time chart.....

Graham, it is hard to compile a Top 40, 42 or 50. My sentiments exactly. You know instinctively that other fans will disagree with your choices and preferences. Your Top ?? will change especially after attending the " Voyage " concert. I know mine will after seeing the show sometime in the future. Then there are omissions you realise too late. In my case, apologies for missing out " The Visitors ", " Hole In Your Soul ", " Dance ( While The Music Still Goes On ) ", " One Man One Woman ", " Take A Chance On Me ", " Mamma Mia " " Waterloo " " Summer Night City ", " Voulez-Vous ", " The Piper " etc. All equally excellent and pop music of the highest standard. I admit it was a painstaking effort and I had to condense my song reviews further from streams of copious notes and paragraphs I had jotted beforehand. It was also, exhilarating at the same time. " Variety is the spice of life ".

Interesting to read your list, Eddie. As I said before, I'm more intrigued by what someone thinks of a song than where they place it on their list (whose position might change on that list on another day, anyway ); and you're good at expressing in a brief sentence how you feel about this or that ABBA song, which I appreciate can't be easy.

I'd like to give this a shot Graham but I remember attempting to do something like this on the old forum but it took ages and was exhausting. I think that was a top 100 though. I'd actually written it all out by hand but I've no idea where it is now.
I'm not sure I could even do a top 20. I can think of a few songs which are amongst my favourite such as Angeleyes, Lay All Your Love On Me and The Visitors but placing them would be difficult.
The big guys such as Dancing Queen, TWTIA and even Knowing Me, Knowing You can come in for some stick on the old Internet. I read some bloke's opinion that he felt KMKY doesn't even sound like an ABBA song! And Dancing Queen being less than popular with quite a few. I also can get why TWTIA wouldn't be a among the favourites of some people, too. Not everyone goes for Agnetha's self-pitying, overwrought interpretation.

I had a couple of attempts at coming up with a Top 40, but the relative newness of the Voyage songs has muddied the waters too much for me. My Top 3 remains unchanged but ISHFIY, DSMD, OTF and NDAI have stumped me: do I like them more or less than big hitters like, say, IIWFTN, WAISAD, KMKY and TNOTG? I know that a ranking need only reflect my feelings right now, but it seems disrespectful to long-loved gems to force them to make way for younger models. Does that make sense?!?
As for Agnetha's emotional response to TWTIA, I'm pretty sure it's Bjorn who said "there were tears" during the first read-through. Agnetha herself said that it was sometimes tough to keep her emotions in check when recording it and that she opted to turn it into "acting a part." At least she'd had a good 18 months distance from the separation before getting the song: poor Frida was presented with WAISAD just a few weeks after her separation from Benny hit the papers. That must have been like salt on a raw wound.

Richard, it was quite a difficult task but at the same time quite satisfying. I wish I could understand why you keep doing this, Eddie. If it’s not for attention, then why? This was your last post and seems positive, so why delete your profile yet again? Obviously you can re-register, but if you need a break from here, you can take it without deleting your profile.

Interesting seeing Eddies fave ABBA songs. No surprise TWTIA was #1 and several Voyage songs on the list.
Dancing Queen was very low down.

I think Eddie has such an emotional investment in TWTIA that he really can't bear to read any suggestion of any negativity about it. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but I think it triggers him every time.
