I'm really intrigued to see what happens with Little Things... 4th single, on back of JAN , ( which personally should have been a bigger hit, only 59 in the UK !!), totally opposite of most other Christmas tracks...
I think we know the charts are compiled differently these days compared to their peak, so the success of the singles so far have been remarkable really, many big names like Madonna , Kylie etc cant even dent the top 100.. So will Little Things chart, Personally yes, but where is another story, because its so different it may stand out compared to the others or may get totally lost, lets be honest its not a party song ! is it something a grandchild would buy for grandparents !! so many ifs buts and maybes... Marketing is good plus a video may help, so time will tell....

However, I do have a few concerns about the use of old live vocal recordings myself. The sources are likely to be the 1977 Australian shows, the 1979 Wembley stuff, and the 1981 Dick Cavett recordings. I’m not a fan of the 1979 recordings as they often sound very different from their studio counterparts. The 1977 ones are better as they were heavily overdubbed for use in ABBA The Movie. Aside from The Way Old Friends Do on Super Trouper, the 1979 recordings were not subjected to any vocal overdubs. The 1981 Dick Cavett stuff I’m assuming was overdubbed in time for broadcast. The problem here is that modern audiences expect a live act to sound pretty much like their studio recordings (to the point that most of them aren’t fully live and are merely singing along to the record). Not sure how ABBA are going to get round this problem, as I’m afraid they really weren’t the best live act in terms of sound, but it was accepted in the 1970s and 1980s that you couldn’t reproduce the record on stage and so no one expected it. I'm trying to imagine the scale of the work involved to get the vocal tracks in shape for these shows. Ludvig has said that the 1977 live recordings simply weren't good enough to make an album viable. And I'm pretty sure that he cited the vocals as the biggest problem - mics being too far from mouths was definitely mentioned. It's likely that pitch and timing might have been factors (but both of these can usually be corrected on modern equipment). Didn't someone say that studio vocals would be used too? And even alternate takes? If suspicions about the inclusion of songs like The King Has Lost His Crown and Under Attack are correct, they will have to use studio vocals. To make the show sound like one single performance, they'll have to rely on more than just the feel of the live band. There'll be differences in the voices between live and studio takes that will have to be carefully approached to avoid making the whole thing sound like a patchwork. I find the whole thing fascinating. I think it's fair to say that a fair chunk of the audience will be just as familiar with ABBA's recordings as they are with the Mamma Mia versions. That could be freeing for ABBA - whether live or studio, Agnetha and Frida absolutely wipe the floor with the actors' performances. Yes, there will be a firm core of people devoted to the peerless original vocals but there'll be many a casual fan/corporate event attendee/person dragged along by a fan who will care a lot less. Who outnumbers who? Not to say that ABBA won't give it their very best shot, but they're likely to be hearing things very differently to their fans - from a much more technical perspective.

Fingers crossed, onlyabba4meagain. I just got the feeling that the 4 albums ahead of it will have more legs than Voyage this week, especially with Abba having just lost their Radio 2 A-list slot for JAN. Will be interesting to see what happens over the coming couple of months. The good news is that I think the album has already been sufficiently successful commercially (and will doubtlessly be revived when Abbatar starts) for Abba to have felt the whole thing to be well worthwhile and (fingers crossed) maybe consider some kind of continuation with new songs in the future.

The Visitors was released 40 years ago today.
Does anyone know if 30 November was the UK release date? Its chart entry date was week ending 19 December, but that would have been two weeks or more after its release date.
It was a frustrating album… in 1981 we still had an old 1960s box-style record player (the ones that allowed stacking of records for continuous playback). We hadn’t experienced too many problems before but it didn’t like The Visitors. The stylus jumped its way through the record. We took it back and changed it several times, and I remember walking with my brother to the electrical shop in the village to get a new needle, but nothing worked. Even the 2p-on-the-stylus trick didn’t work. In the end, my brother had to give up and changed it for the cassette version.
There were reports in the ABBA Magazine of others encountering the same problem but presumably only affected those with old record players!

Considering the shape of the charts these days, Voyage's sustained success is pretty amazing: this achievement is built on physical sales. Streaming is doing precious little. Would it be fair to say that ABBA are doing the opposite of the majority of other artists, bucking the main trend? Yes. Voyage is pretty much physical sales dominated. We know Adele's first week's sales beat ABBA's. But if you look at just physical sales - ABBA had higher 1st week sales than Adele. Ed Sheeran's album may well overtake ABBA in sales but that will be streaming and download not physical sales. I expect Voyage will be #4 this week. It should return to Top 3 for Christmas. Will there be a fifth single?

I seem to recall "The Visitors" being released a week after the single "One Of Us" in the UK, which was released during the first week of December. So, I guess we're talking about the second week of December, which sort of fits with the chart entry (although 19th December was a Saturday and charts have never been announced on a Saturday - I assume it was the chart of the week ending 19th December). You jogged my memory about people having issues with the vinyl. Mine was fine and is the best copy I have in terms of sound quality.

I suspect that actually the problem may be in the mix made for Live At Wembley Arena release, as they tried to mask the fact that they used sound of one of the drums from a different evening (I'm still baffled why on earth didn't they use a complete recording from another night). The vocals on the original ABBA Live don't sound so bad (well, they might have been overdubbed too but even the raw fan recordings often sound better than the official double CD). The Australian recordings really sound great but they cannot be used, because only the parts featured in The Movie were "doctored" in the studio, not the whole tracks. But again, the fan recordings from these concerts reveal that ABBA were in top form back then and both Agnetha and Frida sound great. I would be surprised if they could not compile an acceptable complete concert from all the shows they recorded.

If suspicions about the inclusion of songs like The King Has Lost His Crown and Under Attack are correct, they will have to use studio vocals. The King Has Lost His Crown was rehearsed for the concerts and the rehearsals were recorded. Wouldn't it be nice to hear that version during the ABBAtar concert? And there are more such songs. But it's probably too optimistic to hope for that.

I have always thought that ABBA sounded much better live in "ABBA The Movie" than in the live Wembley 1979 recordings, but I didn't realise that the 1977 recordings had been enhanced in the studio. Since it has turned out the ABBAtars thing will not try to recreate an ABBA concert experience of 1977 or 1979, I don't really mind if they use the studio vocals for a better experience, but using alternative outtake vocals would be nice.
I think people are clinging on to Benny's words too much if they think "The King Has Lost His Crown" will be in the ABBAtars show. I surely hope not, anyway, when there are songs like "If It Wasn't For The Nights" and "Kisses Of Fire" from the same era. It is a mystery to me as to why they included TKHLHC and "Lovers (Live A Little Longer)" in the "ABBA in Switzerland" show to promote the "Voulez-vous" album.

I think they did because they are were proud of the former and they probably thought the latter was innovative and showed their versatility, as it wasn't a typical ABBA song.

The Digital ABBA wont be singing along to the 70s-80s studio or live recordings ? They rerecorded all the vocals and that will be played along with a live band? No. None of the old songs have been re-recorded. The ABBA Tars show will be a mix of old (1970s or 1980s) live vocal recordings or original studio recordings. The songs will, however, sound different due to the live band (which I think includes backing vocalists). As Michal says, Just A Notion (though not included in the show) is an example of what to expect, as it includes original vocals with a completely re-recorded instrumental. Not sure where this rumour of new vocals is coming from, as it seems to persist. It’s completely incorrect. However, I do have a few concerns about the use of old live vocal recordings myself. The sources are likely to be the 1977 Australian shows, the 1979 Wembley stuff, and the 1981 Dick Cavett recordings. Someone on YouTube says songs were re-recorded, says he works on the project, says Agnetha sang The Winner Takes It All live, her voice was deeper, says it was an eerie moment, obviously anyone can say anything online. He also suggested that Head Over Heels was performed too, which is less believable for me! I’ll see if I can find the link, I been watching No Doubt About It lyric video a lot, it may be that!

He also suggested that Head Over Heels was performed too, which is less believable for me! I’d be extremely surprised/gobsmacked if there’s any truth in that. Björn confirmed it’s all old live or studio recordings (aside from the two new songs in it of course). If there is any truth, it’s presumably intended to be a surprise. Björn’s not great with lying though, that’s more Benny’s area. I honestly hope not to be honest, I hate it when acts re-record old songs. Kate Bush’s Director’s Cut put me off for life! I’m happy with ABBA’s lower vocals on the new songs, but not on old ones.

I hate it when acts re-record old songs. Kate Bush’s Director’s Cut put me off for life! I’m happy with ABBA’s lower vocals on the new songs, but not on old ones. I agree about re-recording of old songs, they usually sound like bad covers and I hate when I buy a greatest hits album by somebody only to find out that some of my favourite tracks were newly recorded. BUT in this case it would not be re-recording as such. The songs always sound different when performed live so it could actually be interesting. On the other hand, I can't imagine Agnetha, with her weaker voice, singing The Winner Takes It All. Only maybe some sort of unplugged version...

I had problems with my copy of The Visitors too. If I remember right the album charts were revealed on a Sunday and the singles on a Tuesday. With the wealth of songs to choose from I would hope that TKHLHC and Under Attack were not part of the concerts at the expense of other tracks. Always thought The King as a weak song, especially the chorus.

I too am a bit confused about the old/new vocals issue with the ABBA Voyage shows. I recall Bjorn stating that vocal tracks from concerts and the studio would be used. But I also recall Bjorn stating that the Abbatars vocals would sound different due to their current lower vocal ranges (paraphrasing). I also recall seeing mentioned numerous times in articles that ABBA "performed every song to perfection over five weeks," which could be interpreted in many ways depending on how you interpret the word "performed." I would personally LOVE to hear their current voices re-interpreting their old songs, even if it meant lowering the keys and changing vocal arrangements. It would give us a whole flip side of "new" ABBA material to explore and dissect.

Someone posted on ABBAtalk that Claes af Gaijerstam (ABBA's sound engineering on the 1977 and 1979 tours) recently appeared on Swedish TV showing a box of tapes he had recorded from various live shows. These included concerts from Australia, United States and Japan so maybe there's more material available. Apparently he's given them to the ABBA museum.

'Voyage' is up from No.5 to No.4 in the UK's Tuesday Mid Week Album Chart. Also, there are already 15 Christmas Songs in the UK Top 40, with Mariah at No.2 and Wham! at No.3. So, we will see if ABBA can get a reasonable Hit out of 'Little Things', as the UK Public are already greatly interested in Christmas Songs, this Year. The UK's Tuesday Top 5 Mid Week Albums:01). Adele - 30 (61.1k) 02). Westlife - Wild Dreams (33.0k) * 03). Ed Sheeran - = (21.2k) 04). ABBA - Voyage (15.6k) 05). Gary Barlow - The Dream of Christmas (15.4k) * * = New Entry In The Top 100 Ah yes, they've overtaken Barlow. Good stuff. I'd assumed Barlow had a single on Radio 2 at the mo but it seems not. So, most of his sales would have been over the weekend when the fans rush out, and Voyage should now stay safely ahead. No chance of catching Edward this week, though. I've lost count of Voyage sales to date but I think this week's tally should see it go Platinum in the UK (300,000) and probably over 1 million worldwide.

It was definitely confirmed when the single announcement was made that there would be a video to go with it. I doubt ABBA will be in it though (at least, not as they are now). Hopefully we might get to see it on Friday.

Trust me the amount you can now do to 'fix' old recordings on modern digital equipment means the show will sound fantastic whatever they've used. I bet they will have plenty of recordings to choose from, and the ladies have only lost a tone from their range apparently, unlike certain contemporary artists I could name who have lost the best part of an octave ! Spare a thought for the live band, because syncing to this will be a challenge, especially given the tendency for technology to go slightly pear shaped as it often does at some point :-) As a professional musician can't wait to see it - they have the chance to put on something very special. Normally gigs are a bit rushed and a compromise as they have to be moved around, but with a purpose built venue they can really go to town on the lighting and sound.

Great photo!!!
Voyage concert. I am sure the vocals are the original recordings. Not new and not old live. I wonder what it will look like. It's not 3D. Just shown on a flat screen? But they need specially built arena and touring not practical for it.

But they need specially built arena and touring not practical for it. By looking at the trailer, looks as if there is more than one screen, so ABBA could appear at different locations in the venue, and as they said merging lights between audience and ABBA, you may suspend reality for a moment and forget you are watching a screen.

I wonder how far "off piste" they'll go with the setlist? The bulk of ticket sales may be driven by nostalgia, so it will have to be very hits-heavy. But repeat sales will probably be helped by refreshing the setlist every so often.
