Had a listen. Interesting song. Takes me back to 77 .....Space and Magic Fly. Quite like instrumentals. Abba did gave us two. My favourite being the haunting Arrival. When I hear it I think of mist rolling in from the hills. Also liked Frida’s Time- the lyrical version of Arrival. Very Christmassy feel. Can’t imagine what kind of lyrics would fit with Intermezzo though! Quite fun to try.

Think it was the right move . Making a statement -we have ambition. No doubt confused the audience. How many bands feature a mini musical at their concerts? Love the live versions of the songs but I’m a marionette on the album is the business.....just listening to all those instruments in the background , bubbling under and the build up and the climax. Perfect for closing an album. Quite a menacing song.

The Piper and Soldiers. The seducing of minds, leading people to war. We’re all summoned by a tune, we’re following the Piper....soldiers write the songs that soldiers sing ...

No doubt if it was an equal playing field that if streaming had been about from the 60s Ed’s chart achievements would not seem so incredible. Big artists from yesteryear would also have album tracks flooding the charts on release of new albums.Today there appears to be more chart manipulation ...big artists avoiding releasing albums in the same week to avoid competition. Doubt if Ed would have achieved that with Divide if Adele had released an album in the same week. It’s hard to compare apple and pears. Times have changed and the charts have suffered as a result. Limiting it to 3 hits per artist should help.

Not sure why? As it’s not a rush release on the back of Mamma Mia 1. Maybe they’re staging it....sorry I couldn’t resist. Maybe waiting to guage the success of MM2? Get the masses familiar with all of the songs first? Would love a stage version with that catalogue of songs. I just hope the script is good.

This song? One of their bigger bits in the USA. I feel it is often overlooked. I consider it to be one of their finest recordings. And it still sounds so fresh. And I loved the video too. Might have to dig out the Ludo or Frustration -the popamatic version. Oh the nostalgia! Got me thinking about all those other board games of the time. What’s the name of the games?......Chartbuster, Haunted House, Mouse trap, Operation , it’s a knockout, Mastermind. Happy days indeed.

Depending on the success of Mamma Mia 2 do you think that it could transfer to stage? Would be amazing to have two running in the West End but I think that unlikely and probably put to rest Mamma Mia 1 for a while.

I have often wondered about that claim about Yes sir I can boogie. I love the song but as it was not a major hit in the USA and did not finish in the (UK) top 10 end of year for 1977. Where did the song amass 18 million sales? Spanish territories??They were Spanish but I read that Spanish version of Chiquitita was the biggest selling single in 25 years in Spanish speaking territories . That was 1979.Boogie was released in 1977. So not sure where it sold 18 million.

I know that Dancing Queen and Fernando are the biggest selling Abba hits but which one has outsold the other ? Does anyone know?

Just wondering if Abba would have cracked the (UK) sooner had Honey honey been follow up to Waterloo given that Sweet dreams had a hit with it in the Uk? Had that been so they may have shaken off the Eurovision tag sooner and had greater success with I do x5.?Strange I dox5 was a sizeable hit in the USA but not (UK).

Think Abba were up against it towards the end of 1978. (UK) was in the grip of Grease fever which came to an end quite abruptly and Boney M were the new Abba for 6 months. In that period they could do no wrong but their period of glory was coming to an abrupt end too by April 1979. Abba in their time saw of challenges from the Bee Gees, Punk, Grease, Boney M and Blondie. Other than bad timing I do not understand why it stalled at number 5. I’ve always found it an energetic song. Love both the long and short versions . Heard it was banned from airplay because of a misheard lyric....the f word. It does sound like it. Maybe that didn’t help too if it was not getting enough exposure.

And I also wondered about KMKY being filmed in the snow as a possible Christmas release. Think it did not do as well in Australia as it was the 4 th release from Arrival which already had phenomenal sales by that point. That and over exposure. Releasing songs like King Kong Song and Hasta Manana was madness. Maybe using Fernando in an advertising campaign was not good either. I’m sure there was talk of issuing Tiger as a single in the (UK) after KMKY but this was dropped as they thought 3 singles from the one album was sufficient.

Was just thinking. Abba have been responsible for 13 number one singles in the U.K. The 9 Abba songs. I know him so well, abbaesque, I have a dream (West life) and Hung up. That would increase to 15 if you counted abbaesque as three(not TACOM as already counted in the 9 Abba number ones).

I have always liked DYMK. Love the intro. And is one of the highlights in Mamma Mia. A crowd pleaser. May have charted higher had it been a double A with KOF. Not that keen on Lovers or TKHLHC. Think I would have substituted Summer Night City for one of these tracks. Love light would have been good with a bit more work on it. A bit repetitive.

From another thread. If I can’t have you. The Bee Gees had earmarked that for Abba. Great song . Other songs on my wish list-obviously I know him so well, Heart of Glass, Total eclipse of the Heart, Woman in Love , No more Tears and Chain reaction to suggest a few.

Yeah I remember watching them on the Christmas special. Big viewer numbers in those days-only 3 channels . No videos etc. They also performed TYFTM. And I thought they had been offered If I can’t have you. What another missed oppurtunity especially as that became massive in the states. Think it was number one. It’s also a favourite of mine. That’s made me think about other songs now.

Having read everyone’s comments I think there was only one year where Abba could have secured a no.1 at Christmas ..1980. The year of the awful -there’s no one quite like Grandma. If Super Trouper had been issued a bit later but sales of Super Trouper album by that point might have impacted on sales. 1977 was a no with Mull of Kintyre shifting over 2 million, likewise 1978 Boney m and Mary’s boy child sold close to 2 million, 1979... the Floyd and 1981 the Human league massive hit Don’t you want me?

I remember liking it at the time and not liking Voulez Vous but that has changed over the years. I prefer Voulez Vous. I think it’s the lyrics of I have a dream., A bit too sugary. Strangely I like the Spanish version. But I feel the same about Thankyou for the music. Loved it in 1978 but reach for skip button if it comes on now. However three that I have always disliked are Two for the price of one, I saw it in the mirror and Sitting in the Palmtree. Guess it was released for the Christmas market as there were two more obvious choices as singles As good as New and if it wasn’t for the nights. Think it was the 1st time in chart history that both number one and two in the charts featured choirs of children. Abba were unfortunate to finish at number two twice in 1979 up against two massive songs - Heart of Glass at start of year and Another brick in the wall at the end of the year.

Bought a Tight Fit album years ago . Contained a few Abbaesque songs-Fantasy island , Secret Heart and others. Brotherhood of man Lightning Flash sounds like Super Trouper. The Dooleys -Wanted and Love Patrol are two others sounding like Abba. Any other suggestions? Texas Summer sun and Oliver’s army musically sound like Abba but not vocally. And of course several Steps songs-One for sorrow in particular.

Liking the list of songs so far. With it being a prequel and a sequel, it would be great for the film to finish on a high in the present. A party on New Year’s Eve, all friends assembled joining together to put differences aside to sing The way old friends do before midnight arrives and they launch into Happy New Year. Just a thought. It would be a nice feel good ending and no doubt would have ensured Christmas re runs for years to come and showcase the two songs for new year playlists too.

Heard the extra verse and I did not like the Humpty Dumpty lyric. I think it devalued the song. Maybe the band felt the same, especially with critics in the wing ready to slate their lyrics as banal. Back then they were not loved by the music press snobs. Love the song as it is and maybe a double A with Andante Andante could have given them another no.1 in 1980.

There was such a gap between singles in 1977 & 1978. I think I remember reading that Hole in your sole was a contender for single release in 1978. I liked TYFTM in 1978 but I have grown less fond of it along along with I have a dream. I find TYFTM a bit like a song you would here at a pantomime and I have a dream lyrics a bit syrupy. I would have gone for a Double A with Eagle. Still love SNC. Probably lost out in 1978 with Grease, Saturday night ffever and Boney m hits gripping the charts. The Album still finished no3 for the year but no. 1 if you discounted various artist albums Grease and SNF. In 1979 I would have released If it wasn’t for the nights at the launch of Voulez Vous album and Does your Mother Know in between Chiquitita and If it Wasn’t for the nights.
